Holy shit it is worst than I thought, DA however has a lot to do with spending time meeting people there and "being part of the community", and I don't really do that. No, if your style or art is good you'll get fans.
But if you're mediocre or slightly not shit you will get a lot more attention by drawing something people want to see.

On the other side of that coin. I found someone with a neat style because of fanart and I continued watching them when they fell out of the fandom. Though most of their current art is not what I normally look at, their style is good enough to keep me.

I pretty much stopped being active on DA roughly 1/2 years ago. Most of the people who actively watched me slowly left the site or just became uninterested in my work altogether. Namely after I did some mlp fanart. The pageviews, the comments and favourites started rolling in like mad. And then I stopped making ponies because fuck that shit, I'm not gonna do that shit forever and ever - and then I find out nearly everyone that watched me simply ignored everything nonpony. Was pretty much the last straw, since I was already sort of fed up with that website and its toxic community.
