Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1986074

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Maybe you should stop being autistic. What is your image supposed to prove? That since one artist went without heels, everyone should follow suit? High heels are extremely common in korean fantasy design. Juts look at about any korean-influenced mmorpg ever.
>b-but that's bad design
Sure a design that made it in one of the most successful mmorpg ever is clearly bad because an autist on 4chan says so.
Maybe it's about time you realize that the true function of design is selling the product. If this means dressing fighters in stripper outfits, then you are not only free to, but you actually should, do it.

Thanks for the input everyone, I thinl both arguments have merit. When it comes to character design it is important to consider both function/practicality and form/fashion. Both of these things are kind of ruled by the context the character is in I think.
From the start of this I wasn't really going for anything super grounded in reality, but I do think that the heels don't quite fit with the rest of what I've got going so far. High heel boots is a kind of western thing, isn't it? and shes wearing a darn kimono, so... no, thats definitely something that needs to go I think. I suppose I'll just have to google fashion for more ideas.

yes, people are funny aren't they? the practicality of footwear of all things. try to reconcile that with a person who also apparently enjoys art, being on /ic/ and all.

i really find it difficult to understand, do their brains process design information subconsciously, so they get how pictures work when they don't think about it but they come up with drivel when they try to put it into words?

or are they just like.. "art dumb" where they just don't get as much information from art as other people? maybe there's levels and they can get some stuff but not other stuff. idk.

i'm always tempted to think of these people as nothing more than trolls. but are they really, or are people that stupid? perhaps they only act stupid sometimes, and sometimes they're less retarded?

it's a conundrum wrapped in an enigma.

Ever hear of suspension of disbelief? Sexy non-functional character designs work because the logic of the fictional world allow it to. If you wanted to be realistic, a female warrior would always lose to a male one because of how different our bodies are built. Everyone who dislikes sexy character designs are more than welcome to go create their own IPs, but I guess that requires a lot more work than whining does, so it's understandable that people don't.

I was wondering what everyone thought about the rest of her outfit. It seems a bit odd, that half kimono/skirt. But I wanted to accentuate an hourglass shape while showing off her legs? But at the same time I'm basing the design off of japanese archery, which traditionally involves a full kimono, and I'm not a fan of how 'formless' those garments can be.
In other words I'm trying to strike a happy middleground, but I'm inexperienced with desgin, to say the least.

All MMO devs are talentless hacks these days who just want numbers and homogenize every game to get as many players as possible which only cripples the game in the end. They are fucking idiots. There's so much money to be made by the right MMO, but no one has the brains to accomplish it these days. Indie devs can't afford to compete with these shiny shitshow MMORPGs, so everyone loses. Fuck MMORPGs, WoW will just stay at the top spot for the rest of the century for all I give a fuck.

FFXIV, fun for a month or two, but after that not worth. Combat is a huge selling point for me to any MMORPG because that's literally what you do 90% of the time unless you're crafting or whatever. You're out killing shit, pvp, raid, etc, it's all combat. The combat in FFXIV felt like some shit from the early 2000's. Absolute bullshit, and not fun at all. I thought Dragoon, Monk and classes with more shit to mash for combos would be fun, but nope. The combat system just sucks dicks. I'm not paying 15 bucks a month for that shit.

>> No.1992790

>>1992439
nah, just improve the lighting where you are taking the picture. You shouldn't be working in a dark place if you are drawing anyways. Make sure you have 2 light sources - white balance your photo if you are on a smart phone (takes like 2 secs)

The stuff I usually post is always native ipad camera resolution (2592x1936) and nobody complaines- although I usually posted a snapshot of more than 1 drawing

keep drawing though, and try to budget your page space better so you don't clip the feet (unless they were clipped intentionally). I know its easier said than done

Let's break this down.

I'll start:

>Right arm completely blocked at some point by head.

>Coat isn't flowing enough.

>Lack of detail and texture.

>Left foot barely visible to hide details, right foot and leg MIA.

>Light from sword isn't reflected in her body.

>Left shoulder-pad is currently breaking her arm.

>Texture in chain-mail is shit.

But the most important thing is a general lack of form and flow, which is the one thing I don't know how to fix, barring more photography studies.

the expression your goin for (nonplussed confusion) would have the middle of the brow pursed, dropped ever so slightly, with either neutral outter brows, or one slightly cocked/raised. can be combined with the mouth slightly agape (if you open it too far, it will almost exclusively read as disgust (tho if that's what you're goin for, i suggest havin the eyes opened wider than normal restin position an to probably drop the cocked brow)

the bes advice i can tell you is grab a mirror an do some very silly exaggerated expressions an study how they fuck ur face up (also neat to note is that while you can kinna break down expressions in a universal way, everybody actually expresses things uniquely, some more so than others, so that's somethin to pay attention to maybe when designin a character is their unique mouth shapes or eyebrow powers, but also note this is a super advanced concept, somethin way beyond what you seem to be capable of at the moment. i don't mean this to discourage you, but to give you a cool thing to look forward to as you improve nwn)

i mean this in the nicest way possible, but you could improve upon everything. now, everybody can always improve anything they do, there's no skill cap persay, but that's not what i'm gettin at here. you've got some bad technique an some bad form an you gotta unteach yourself a lotta habits you got currently, but it's not impossible, an it's definitely worth it if you really want it bad enough. i'd suggest you go to the sticky an look up some of the things they suggest. i don't personally like loomis much, but he's a decent place to start. i'm more partial to vilppu but he's a bit harder, but definitely worth it in my opinion

i've been told LOOMIS isn't worth it unless you are above a beginner level. another thread told me to use other stuff and THEN loomis because loomis doesn't teach or something it's more of an improving on the basics once you KNOW the basics.

i really don't know though, i've been at this shit for 5 years now and i really haven't fucking improved. need to unlearn probably a good 8 years of "art" and I just want to draw fun stuff and I already know that isn't how it works. i get bored with practicing shit and then i don't want to draw anything for myself due to sucking shit and being disappointed at wasting 2 hours drawing something.

I started Loomis when I first came here and I can say with absolute certainty that it has helped me especially his book on drawing heads. The thing about Loomis is not about drawing his blook heads for the sake of just drawing them but it's how you use the approach and tools to draw them that is important since you will be using the same method to everything else. The more you do it the better you will get.

Ok I am back... I traced the face today then shaded the linework with the ref nearby. Couple things I noticed
>tracing was very fast, like 5 mins
>spent WAY too long rendering the face afterwards
>also tried rendering on one layer, it wasn't so bad

Things I want to try:
>trace more faces to learn feature placements since it seems like I can do this quickly
>place landmarks over the ref only (instead of tracing)
>learn to render faster

Things for this face
>something strange with her left cheek...
>I shifted all the shading down from the linework instead of directly under it
>gotta practice hair some more. I tried blocking it out initially, but it looks like slurry

I might start on another face tonight... can't decide

those lines on the knees dont make any sense and she is not balanced, flip your canvas o see this better
i am guessing the same happens with the arms since you hide a hand and the other looks like sausage
study your fundamentals and then stylize

Caught red-handed (or redlined). I have not focused on learning feet much yet since I'm working on general figure drawing as much as possible before devoting time to hands/feet. Please bear with it until then and they'll probably seem wonky at times.
