From last thread.

Using the cognitive drawing technique from Jason Brubaker that redline anon recommended. Find it interesting that you get instant feedback and long term memory of the little details, but I'm still finding it hard to get the proportions right. I keep drawing wide and the angle feels off... Also I forgot to finish the damn hat. How many attempts should I give this before trying something else do you think? What other mistakes am I not seeing?

I've been drawing for 14 days straight now and I think that I have fun, but I know there's going to be a time where I have to study another fucking artist, or read a Loomis book. I already know perspective because I read perspective made easy but I don't know advanced perspective even though I have how to draw by Scott Robertson.

so the general question is when is it time to study? I know it's going to happen eventually but when that's really it

Hello pawell, as someone who used to study and recommend vilppu a lot, I have some thoughts for you

First thing is the actual exercises of drawing beans, boxes, beans + boxes, ellipses... I feel like these exercises are more important than actually copying the drawings in his book. It might be heresy, but I feel like Vilppu's drawings are kind of ugly and wobbly, and it might not be a good source for learning, if that's what you're going for.

I remember getting an entire clean ream of printer paper, and finishing the whole thing, doing only beans on it. My dexterity and ability to put down lines at literally any length and angle improved so much from that. I feel like if you actually want to learn from vilppu, that could be one of the most beneficial things to do.

The second thing is that doing vilppu requires knowing proportions. I know your favorite book is keys to drawing, but I don't think you can draw references accurately enough yet. Working on the skill of measuring angles and proportions and plumb lines, continuing to drill this sense of observation, would be really beneficial for you.

I used to shill Vilppu a lot, but really, I kinda don't like him anymore. The several years I studied Vilppu, resulted in a very long plateau for my own growth. I only started improving again, after ~5-6 of aimlessly drawing, was when I started the masters studies thread and started making exact copies. Yes, even after all these years of drawing, I found out I still sucked at observation. Even now, I still suck, and most artists should continue working on observation, even if they think they're good at it. When I do an exact copy of an anime head, it takes me more than 30 minutes, to get it right. I think, spending that long on a single copy, trying to get it perfect, is the best thing you can do to improve.

(I would appreciate if you didn't paste this on your website btw. i just want to help)

No, timed drawings.
Just copy, BUT drawing with a short timer, and then stop.
That will force you to pay attention to line economy, improving observation skills, line accuracy, and most importantly, to stop drawing and "complete" your pieces even if they aren't perfect.

Every force has an equal opposite force: for every beg attempting to escape the beg pit, there is a minimum of one crab attempting to push them back. For the vast majority of begs, the crab represents a "concept" that exists only in their own heads: weariness, doubts, laziness, low IQ, etc.

However, there are instances when a beg is so self-determined that their whole being gives birth to an actual distinct entity: their own personal crab, who follows them around endlessly while they attempt to escape this begpit.

One could argue that you aren't truly trying hard enough if you don't have your own crab pestering you!

Doing alright, picked up a course on unity so I can start putting my drawings in a game we'll see how that goes but it's a nice break from drawing all the time makes me happier to draw and to learn the unity thing.

Been following vandruff's 2020 bridgeman bootcamp and in the 4th session from 10-40 minutes in (feel free to skip around for the general gist), he goes over one of the assignment and showcases some of the submissions:
https://youtu.be/8Gg_ofUz2Mw?t=616

After seeing them for myself, I realized my perspective skills are lacking; I feel like a have a basic idea of how to rotate and translate boxes, that I can use a box to map out the general placement of the pose, and I can use perpendicular slices to estimate the separation between the head, torso, and pelvis, but I still struggle in actually placing down the 3 shapes at the correct angles and positions. Does anyone know of any demonstration and/or resources for learning this, especially for checking correctness?

For questions like that, I try to look up videos of famous artists working and experiment with what they do (e.g. documentaries with yoneyama mai for grip, angle, etc).

But of course, none of this is technically needed, everything really just comes down to what you're comfortable with and experience.

What's a good way to measure digitally? On traditional when doing studies, I would draw with the image in front of me on a screen, hold my pencil up to it for reference, and make a series of marks on the paper to measure out the length and width of everything and then go from there. However, I haven't figured out a way to measure on digital so everything I do digitally turns out inaccurate.

>> No.7077243

>>7077237
most digital programs have an integer or percent for the zoom tool. remember where it is at and its just like measuring normally. remember to always draw as zoomed out as possible. also what you can do is lower the opacity of your reference and pass it over your art here and there to see what you don't like about it.

Maybe this should go in the stupid questions thread

But how do you CONSTRUCT a body in perspective? Its one thing to draw a building (a box) in perspective. But without just xerox copying a reference how do you go about doing it?

Example in pic related, how the fuck do you even start with setting up how big the face will be etc

Ignore the retard with his incorrect box. Just because you can draw the box doesnt mean you can draw the ribcage or the anatomy at that angle, which you need to learn from xeroxing from references anyway. Best thing to do is just to draw and study the body from as many angles as possible, as accurately as possible. While technically possible to do in reverse, simply using boxes wont actually help you while keeping gesture, weight and other things. Only thing it solves is the perspective and orientation

But the thing that has taught me the most about figures in perspective is actually drawing figures in perspective. Joe Kubert recommended people learn foreshortening by drawing reclining figures at life drawing sessions. today, we can just get photos of olympic gymnasts or whatever.

but my main question is will I just get good at drawing anime or referencing off of anime? I'm not looking for like "BE 0 TO KIM JUNG GI IN 100 DAYS" because that's impossible and also that's just not what I'm looking for.

but overall what I'm doing is planning. I have to make a habit of drawing everyday than I learn/study

Every study you post, there is no improvement and instead just further descent into madness.
You were laid out a path to figure drawing, yet you refuse listen to anyone and do anything, but pointless copies of beg books like an autismo you are.
>draw gestures and simpler figures to understand and memorize general proportions and landmarks of human body
>then focus on features and anatomy
>when you understand both, draw it all together
Instead you are in this middle ground, where you can capture neither proportions nor features. All proportions are fucked, because you don't have visual library and all features are symbol drawn, because you don't really study them. For last months you haven't posted a single drawing that looks remotely human. Maybe you should follow on your own advice and go back to KTD and learn to study and draw what you see.

I'm struggling to get over this line where you can recognise the subject of my drawing to some degree but it's just off slightly and I don't know how to fix it to get it completely accurate to the picture

it looks pretty good. The camo looks time consuming to draw

The guy's left arm looks a little flat and blocky though. I think it would look a bit better if the crease of the inner elbow was a bit deeper.

I got a certification in drawing at my local cc for fun (basically means you just took some core classes in a subject). Having deadlines and being forced to draw things outside your comfort zone (slightly angled anime girls) is super helpful.

I don't have anything against loomis. I tried drawing and sometimes it worked. It's just i prefer the way Stephen Bauman does.

Hi, are there any 4chan or notable R18 (Eastern/mixed styles) discord servers around? Looked through the entire catalog and found nothing, I don't think it warrants its own thread so I'm asking here.
(My question is genuine and I'm not trying to stir unnecessary drama.)
