If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

Why is all beginner material so bad bros?
A beginner should focus on line art and figure drawing until hey can get consistent with drawing line art of the body in proportion.
And that requires simplifying the shames of the body in 2D planes and 3D object which you rotate in space.
Why do all beginner material spend like 1, max 2 lessons on that and jump the gun to shading, rendering, perspective, texture or whatever else bullshit?
The first several dozen hours, if not 50-100 hours of a beginner should be spend on just what I described, the rest comes after.

Holy shit, googley eye anon, you’re leveling up! Good job! Keep going! I think you need to spend more time on the whole figure with legs and feet, but this is a huge improvement over just portraits. I honestly think you’ve got the torso nailed. Obviously keep practicing it all, but I think these are good enough that grinding torsos doesn’t need to be a main focus or the bulk of your training. The one in the bottom right corner is especially great. You just need to study the limbs and attaching them to the entire pose with appealing rhythms. Your arms are basically there, it’s mostly the legs and feet that need work imo. I think your heads and faces are great, I love your style. Overall very impressive, anon. I can’t fucking wait to see full figure/character drawings from you. I’ve been a fan of yours for a while. Do you have a blog or archive or anything?

No one actually tells them to spend 50-100 hours on just that though. They give you an assignment which you do in a couple of hours max, and next week its another lesson with something new that you need to practice on etc.

Oh cool, that anon who helped show me how to improve the Maria Amino pic I drew (and still gotta redraw) was featured in this.

So anyway, what I did today...and boy does it look bad.

Admittedly, my shoulder was acting up pretty badly so I was in pain and wasn't really in the mood to draw, but I am just unsure why it looks like a symbol drawing so much? Like I can't really put my finger on why it looks so flat despite my attempt to give it form?

The only solace I have is I couldn't have drawn something like this a month ago, but I still dunno how to give my pictures more depth, though maybe if I feel okay tomorrow I may figure it out, I am thinking of doing some skull studies soon to try and make something with more form.

Forget the picture quality try to focus on line quality. Create confident clear lines, sketchyness should be a stylistic choice, keyword being choice as in you can make clean bold lines when needed and sketchy unclear ones skillyfully to imply shapes. The idea is there and I tried to interpret what you were going for but I'de recommend trying to draw slowly and make one continuous line rather than a whole bunch of sketchy ones, it'll help with your control

Day 1. Installed a drawing app on my phone and traced over some pictures. Already seeing progress (a good portion of it from just learning to use the app better) but I'm still plagued by symbol drawing.
I also tried drawing some spheres but I can never get the curves right.
All I want to be able to do is draw rough sketches on my phone with my fingers, just in case I need to show something I have in mind to someone.
What do I need to do/learn, in order to gain that skill in the least amount of time possible?
Should I start by just grinding tracing over counstruction sketches so I learn where to put the lines?

Holding a phone and a clipboard/notebook may be similar to holding a phone, but swiping on a touch screen isn't the same as writing or drawing on it. Believe me I've tried every possible position and the least uncomfortable one is the still-very-much-uncomfortable plain old sitting at a desk.

I do exercise and it is gradually improving, but it's a long term change that doesn't make sense as a solution for the problem at hand.
Am I supposed to put off drawing for years until I'm no longer uncomfortable on a desk instead of just drawing on my phone (which I can do right now), just because it's somewhat better?
I just accept that it's worse than paper and go on with my life.
I asked a specific question and instead of receiving a single answer, I got a number of people telling me to do something else entirely that I keep explicitly saying I don't want to do, entirely based on a number of assumptions about my situations.
I'm not here to describe my life. Just pretend I said I'm allergic to paper or something. All I want to know is how to improve on my phone.

The truth is you won't really improve on your phone. Drawing on your phone is a gimmick that will create really bad habits, even with a stylus anon. Pencil and paper is calling your name, you can make it work somehow. You are not supposed to put off drawing, you are supposed to make it work. Figure it out anon. I don't necessarily want to hear about the description of your life, either.

But if you want to get better at drawing, it's not going to happen on your phone. This level of "but I can't" is crazy. I'm sorry if you're being genuine, but it's almost unbelievable. Just carry a small notepad and pen/pencil with you that fits in your pocket.

There's even smaller ones than this. Cheaper ones. There's ones that have a strap for a pencil. There's ones that come with a small little pen or pencil.

It's not that I can't. It's that I don't want to because drawing isn't (or won't be) a big enough part of my life to warrant sitting through uncomfortable practice for however many hours it's going to take.
If I'm never going to draw well, that's fine by me, as long as my sketches are functionally good enough to portray what I have in mind.
What I mainly want to improve on is the knowledge of what lines to draw, how to see the correct shapes/values/etc, how to decide where to put what, etc. so even if I don't have the manual dexterity to do those things well, I'll be happy with just the knowledge side of things.

Then read a book and don't draw at all. Read a book on your phone. But art is not just a pool of knowledge. It's a skill that you won't really fully understand the how or why until you're trying to do it yourself. And if you're trying to do it to understand it more deeply, drawing with your finger on your phone is pointless and will only lead to more frustration.

Because I don't know anything yet, so someone more knowledgeable than me can advise me on what exercises make more sense in my case, what things I don't need to learn, stuff that I should keep in mind, etc.
When I help beginners in the things that I'm knowledgeable in, there are many such things that I tell them, and if they have a specific situation that determines a unique set of requirements, I'm able to guide them towards a far better path than they would've chosen on their own. I hoped people here would do the same but I mostly just got pic related.

>Then read a book and don't draw at all. Read a book on your phone. But art is not just a pool of knowledge. It's a skill that you won't really fully understand the how or why until you're trying to do it yourself
Obviously I need to practice if I ever want to be able to do anything with this knowledge, so merely consuming educational content is obviously not enough. I don't understand how you got that I don't want to draw, considering how I've been saying from my first post that I want to draw on my phone because that's where I want to spend my hours practicing.

When I say "functionally good enough" I don't mean that they should be good enough to work as standalone pieces of art. They just need to be able to show what I'm thinking. Is it wrong to be happy by social media, like posting here? Like on one hand I think social media is cucked and stuff, but on the other, the few responses to the art I post genuinely make me happy and I wouldnt be able to connect with other artists otherwise. If you want to improve, get on quickposes.com, make an account, and try to get to the 500 hour certificate. It logs the time for you automatically. Use Michael Hampton's book as your theory on how to draw.

Don't think too much. Don't hoard courses. Don't watch hours of tutorials. Your goal now is to get in the reps. When you are tired of quick poses, do master copies. Go on twitter, and copy the beautiful art that captures your eye.

Ask yourself, why do so many people struggle learning the basics of art? It looks terribly simple, it should be simple. The answer is they are being taught by the small percentage of people who never had to struggle with those problems, thus often what actually gives beginners issues isn't even thought about in tutorials unless it's so obvious it cannot be left out (ex. look at the reference more than the page). NGMI would not be a thing if untalented people were the ones making tutorials, because they would have faced the problems that their students are experiencing personally, and know how to overcome them. I did this one a tad late and boy I messed up the perspective of the right foot in comparison to the left foot quite a bit.

It took me an hour to do which again I bet if I did this earlier in the day would have taken me 30 minutes.

I am pretty bored of Burne Hogarth though I am worried about not doing the right thing next, should I try drawing from real life next rather than other drawings now?

You need to understand how a Reilly abstraction lays on top of the figure. You need to find these lines on the figure and put them down accurately. Try tracing the Reilly abstraction on to a photo of the figure so that you know where you can find those lines. This should be a slow and methodical process at first, just take your time.

However none of this is of any use if you haven't trained your eyes how to see proportions and angles properly. Learn to copy. There's plenty of course and free content surrounding observational drawing and measuring. Dorian Iten, Simplify Drawing and Painting, New Masters Academy, Brent Eviston, etc. Learn how to copy angles and basic shapes 1:1. I don't care if it's anime, still life, cars or aliens. Just make sure the subject is simple enough to not be too overbearing of a challenge..

It's a very boring composition. Shapes could vary more in size and dimensions, they're all roughly the same making this very monotonous. You need to focus on the bigger picture when it comes to stuff like this. Try doing this project at a smaller size, this way you spend less time and spend more on the big picture idea.

Day 21 of learning the basics n whatnot. Wasn't able to draw as much as I wanted today cuz of other stuff, but I managed to squeeze in some practice before I sleep. Did some more basic shape practice, another skull value based on feedback a kind anon gave me. it's sloppy, but I think it looks better than the other skulls i've done so far. also with all the perspective talk lately, I decided to start Marshalls perspective course, while I do Proko's basics course. The way it's filmed makes it feel like i'm actually in the classroom which is neat. Marshall also seems like a cool dude. Did a small amount of perspective practice(though idk if it's a good way to practice) with a simple monkey head. I also wanted to ask so I can read it when I wake up tomorrow; can someone explain to me what a station point is? I didn't really understand Marshalls explanation. Overall, decent day.

But the thought process is the same as drawing with lines, its just you're filling the mass of the forms rather than outlining their contours.
Honestly you look like you're pretty early on in the learning process so you shouldn't worry about mastering anime bodies. Just focus on your fundamentals, they'll make it easier to execute more complicated subjects.

Honestly I don't think I would tackle this piece like that. To me this drawing seems to be strictly anti construction, not in the sense that there are no visualizations of 3d forms, but in the sense that those forms are so illogically/inconsistently warped that trying to construct it in this manner doesn't actual inform you on what makes the drawing work.
Also you definitely misrepresented the angle of the pelvis.

Just look at it and then try to draw it. First I would get a feel for the gesture and the shapes, then add the forms in. Like any figure drawing. I would approach it differently if I were doing a deliberate master study. I would try to replicate it as closely as possible, a couple times. Down to the brush strokes.

I gave it a shot while doing some gestures. One of these things is not like the others, kek.

Yeah, I still used construction and thought of the main masses, and did more of the thing Vilppu talks about where you analyze the pose and try to reconstruct it vs trying to copy it as accurately as you can. I think that if you’re trying to learn a specific artist’s style, and that’s what you want to draw like, then you’ve gotta do both, with at least an emphasis on copying from observation, like you’re saying. I obviously didn’t do that lol.
