Not really anything to work with here, so just low /beg/. Draw something to finished because there's not much to say about a quick sketch and lineart wise quite frankly there is no line art, just scratches.
>>6495457
Higher /beg/ I guess, i like the coloring choices but the figures really need more variation, its all very straight forward basically profile views and lacks anything interesting. Especially when you see the same face 4 times in 1 page it really makes it feel too bland even with the pretty interesting coloring.

I am planning to reach the average skill level of the artists below (except maybe the middle bottom and bottom right ones, all of them mutuals and social media artists I follow) in 1 year maximum, since I feel like I can probably get at those levels quickly enough to start working on personal projects full time. My current skill level is above, how far do you think I am as of now? Doing this for myself since I want to start making small comics and world building projects fully in the near future and I need both competent enough art and decent writing.

I know it's a troll at this point, but I hate this draw so much and I dont know why. Needless to say, it's a very well detailed piece, albeit sketchy in some areas.
>>6495442
Not bad, but I'd try to reduce the symmetry as much as possible and give more detail and expression to the face, also I think you would rather post a finished work on this thread kek, there's nothing to concretely say from these.

Too scratchy and sketchy, but I can see the attention to detail and a good use of tools here, doesnt look all that finished to me desu, but it has it's charm as it is.

I'm sorry but at your level you should be doing things that imagen can't do and should break the boundaries in what you're capable of. Extreme angles/distortion, exaggerated expressions, gesture and better contrast in composition are some things you can and should pull off. Great start. There’s a lot to convey in that image. The first guy is right. It needs way more definition. Try doing a two tone study if it’s not clicking. As far as colors go, add some more warm tones to highlight the form. Play with reds and oranges. Then just more detail once you have that. If this is oil paint I would just treat this like an under painting and work right on top of what you already have.

Line thickness is everywhere. There's no thought to it.
Anatomy needs massive improvement. Flug's abdomen has no depth to it. Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it has no form. Heed's anatomy as well. The muscles/forms are slapped on without an idea how they actually are.
There's a lot of things that make it beg. And describing them all wouldn't help you.
But something new cartoonists forget is that they need to know anatomy and how that anatomy wraps around the form.
I say this since I draw fanart of this show a lot. Keep it up though.

I recommend grouping values to make things less muddy. It could help to start with bigger shapes and two values first (your main light and shadow) then go into the smaller details and more nuanced values later. Another way to clean it up would be paying more attention to your edge control. To me it seems as if you went first with a small brush, which would explain the white spaces, but you don't seem to have a clear image of what the final product would look like.

I agree with the guy that a two stone study would be good but I don't know if I would agree with treating your current progress as an underpainting because the layers look very rough and thick to me the more you add the more uneven it will become. This was my mistake with my first oil painting 4 years ago. Instead of knowing how to take away from the paint and be decisive with my actions, I kept adding more over my mistakes up only to end up with my layers, texture, surface, and brushstrokes all fucked up so I had to use my thinner to wipe layers of wasted paint and repaint over after destroying all the preexisting paint. Thinking you can just correct your mistakes by painting over like with digital is a common mistake for people painting for the first time.

I also don't know if I would agree with the comment on warm tones, because temperature is more advanced than values. If you don't know your light and shadows adding more varied temperature will most likely make things even more confusing (mistake I do a lot the time). I recommend a zorn palette for temperature work, but I myself am terrible at temperature so I really can't give any advice beyond the basics and beginner stuff.

That’s not my drawing of Dem. I was just showing you what I meant by form. Notice how her face is depicted as a 3 dimensional shape. This is what your piece lacks.
Mimicking Alan’s style is actually really easy. If you want to get good at that you should collect shots from the show. Or use his artwork as a reference sheet. If yours looks off trace the reference to get proportions of the face then attempt to redraw it without tracing.
But you should definitely practice human anatomy by drawing poses from reference and studying the muscles.

Your style is cool. You should clean up your lines but if you used a traditional medium like ink then the material would create more natural lines without you having to worry about aliasing and jagged digital shit. You probably do more than just digital but the next step it to make physical works and have them framed. Maybe make a wood block stamp and do series or at least make a stamp for your signature since it would compliment the style.

Compositionally this is pretty based and the values are good at creating depth. Although, as a unity, the image looks good, when I break it down into individual parts it folds pretty badly. Like the other anon’s post >>6498217
you’d benefit from creating using a traditional medium. The tool you used to make the background and some other elements look like they were printed just looks fucked up where two segments of dots meet. Additionally, the little line tool you used in some areas like in the bottom right should either be drawn in or clipped in but the round brush for that intention doesn’t work. Another thing I noticed is that you should have drawn the sun instead of using the airbrush, especially since you didn’t use a fully opaque brush and I can see the dot layer behind the sun. Good work, altogether.

Use brushes made for ink and let the materials work for you. Krink makes something called like the K40 or something which has an unusual applicator included with the ink. I recommend you play with some really high quality alcohol based inks and you’ll see what I mean about letting the medium work for you. Pens are honestly lame if you want to make loose artsy shit or anything that isn’t academically western. You can try water/charcoal base inks but I don’t have any experience with them but their properties are different than alcohol or xylene base inks.

Do you have anything more finished? This being the only example of your work that I have I would say you’re young or just beginning to draw. I’d say keep working and get loose like a goose when you’re being creative. Positioning of the body is good but the hands and feet need work. If you’re interested I can effort post about what I mean when I talk about getting loose when you’re creating. If you’re just starting don’t get discouraged my tone is critical by the nature of our dialogue but your work is good. Really work on your hands and feet if you plan on drawing lots of figures.

Unfortunately no. Ive been trying to build a following but its been hard lol. I know drawing fanart is the way but I just like drawing personal stuff more.

>there's a level of mastery missing from your work
>the wolf sucks
Yeah, so I have really only been hardcore studying for about a year now, but started art in 2021 and have had an experienced artist guide me. We've mainly been working on anatomy and capturing likeness to reference, so it could be that I was just really feeling like doing more one day and decided to just jump into messing around with harsh light. It was fun, but obviously I fucked quite a couple things up on the painting lol. That missing mastery is also something ive noticed fundamentally as well. I want to say the main source of that feeling you're getting from my work is that ive been stalling what I call the "final phase" of practicing for a bit of time now. I absolutely agree that Im missing that ever so slight bit of edge to push my work to the level I one day wish to be at. I believe ill finally have an opening to begin building up my fundamentals again by next month and I cant wait :)

That helps a little bit more, thank you. What I still don't understand is what I did wrong with the anatomy. I can see it for Flug's stomach but for the rest I genuinely don't know how to improve it without sacrificing the simplicity I was going for. Is it the lack of definition? The placement of the musculature I *did* put on there? I'm truly at a loss.

NTA, but I would say you belong just along the edge of beg/int. Kind of in limbo between them.

You show decent enough anatomy in your work without breaking anything. The colors are decent, and the shading is nice. The boob is drawn nicely, though missing just a little more squish. The way the hands get sharp at their 3rd finger joint look wierd on the man, almost like theyre octopus fingers. I would have said you're comfortably int due to the mans grasping hand stylization, but as I look at it more I realize a few things. The truth is, the stylization disrupts certain things but what makes it obvious for me is the clothing. The clothing around them follows no perspective and is very all over the place from what should be just a standard look from above, aka birds eye view. The clothing flattens the image a lot due to its lack of following the depth of what should be the bed.

Again, on the anatomy front it looks nice, besides the hands. However the clothing and perspective definetily makes it far harder to place you int.

Blah blah beg this int that. Speaking normal human, its a nice drawing, just study up on perspective and for sure clothing a bit more to engrave that into your head when drawing, so oopsies like in that piece dont occur again, because once you see it you cant unsee it lol.

the shadows on her ass and legs are especially notable, but general anatomy all around like her arm proportions and whatever the fuck is going on with that entire right arm is really notable.

the mech also lacks symmetry, which for a mech is kinda a big deal.

its not complete trash or anything, but its also massively lacking in a lot of areas you definitely need to work on.
honestly what i hate the most is the color/value balance because especially looking at the thumbnail you almost can't even tell the girl is there, she just melts into the mech due to the identical colors and values.

I don't think the color scheme is necessarily a bad thing. Contrasting colors isn't always necessary. It really depends on what you are going for.

Hello Beg, I feel you lot just need to be more confident on your art. I consider myself a mid to high level beg with a measureable amount of success. The problem is most of the time people dont have an interesting story to tell, everything is repetitive and bland and uninsteresting, you what I mean?

I am not saying I am a world class storyteller, of course not, but I have an audience(its bloody important to KNOW your audience) and although my art is not perfect, its engaging. My style is strongy influenced by manga and anime too.

So, if you are interested in some tips, here's a video offering some tips for begs I did a while ago:

I wanted to give hair an unique messy look because her hair are way thicker then humans, and behave more like fur, but i didn't pay attention to them and didn't care how they look, more like just making a shape, so i didn't even colour them. It also looks blurry because i suck at lineart and i draw with pencil and on that picture the direct light of a table lamp is shining on grafite which reflect light and basically disappear partially

Is there anything i can study to become better? Im self taught and already studied anatomy and perspective so i pretty much just able to draw any poses from my imagination. But i cant find my own style and don't want to copy anyone else's, so my drawings don't look appealing while being technically correct. Also adhd doesn't let me draw too many details which matter

Before people come foaming at the mouth I just want to explain why things got rated higher or lower than others.
>unfished work
If you're gonna post in a r8 thread, show us your best, not sketch#83738 you post and never finish. Even if you avoid coloring because you're bad, or you don't know shading, well then you know what you have to work on then, you don't need some anonymous retard spoon feeding advice
>lack of backgrounds
Some pieces had better poses than others, some had better rendering, but it's hard to rate anyone past Mid int if all you draw are characters on a blank canvas and nothing else. Draw the setting! Where are they? What are they doing? Tell a story with the background. I understand some don't for various reasons, from not being able/not knowing what to do for a background to a background sometimes not being necessary for a certain piece. I understand that, just don't get upset if you're rated lower than someone else you think you are better than because they had the balls to do a background
>styles and tastes
There were a couple of styles I rated highly for a simple reason. They work. They look good, they convey their character/tone/emotion well enough. Just because someone draws in a photo realistic style, doesn't mean his picture is automatically a tier above someone with a simple style. What works, works. Simple as that.

Looking at it again, I think the main issue is the lack of rendering. I understand the shading style you are going for, but just understand it's a hard shading style to get right. A few lines shy and the image feels flat. Looking at your anatomy, it doesn't exactly off, just more stiff than anything else. Especially around the upper chest to neck region, which might be where your anatomy falls a bit short of everything else. At first I thought her left arm was shorter than the right, but I realized it's just slightly further back than the rest. The reason why it feels this way though is your choice of shading. Line shading can look super cool but remember you're telling a story with the lines, they wrap around their forms. One of the only bits of advice from a Proko video I actually thought was decent was him explaining poses, and when to exaggerate. Tuck her arm back a bit more, have her lean more heavily on that sword. Arch hee back a bit, twist her hips. Even if it's subtle, it goes a long way. Your job as an artist is to convey a story without saying a word. I don't expect you to change her now at this stage in your drawing, but just try to keep it in mind when you start your next piece.

Oh I didn't expect such a detailed analysis.
Yea hatching is pretty hard for me but hey as long as I study and draw I will improve(I hope haha). I always try to study artists who draw and render in a similar way like Miura and Takehiko Inoue.
Yea my understanding of anatomy ain't great either you're right. Currently reading Hogarth and an anatomy book to get better.
About exaggeration, maybe I'm afraid of breaking a body by doing that. The solution is probably study anatomy more and do more gestures, I think. But I still can't find a way of drawing gestural figures that can click with me, maybe I should just broteforce them, just grind grind and grind, that's what I did with heads.

gotta agree here with high beg, low int
like the ass looks straight up bad and the left leg looks wrong asswell
Composition is pretty good when you add the atmosphere color that one anon did
Hair and helmet also look pretty good but the hands are kinda big and dont feel feminine enough

Overall a "keep going, champ"

Lots of haters in this thread who are super jealous of your work. You seem to have advanced really quickly but your anatomy needs some work. Great job, you’re one of the only anons with a future as a career artist.

as the other anon said the drawing reads weird, might be the lack of shading or just general composure; linework anatomy etc. look very solid to me (could use more variation in line strength to make it easier to read) but the hand is very generic and flat, if a hand is the centerpiece of the whole drawing then imo it should be more varied and shapely, it is very symmetric and flat and as a result ends up looking kinda grotesque in such size
