A lot of them have basic knowledge of English, not necessarily enough to hold a conversation but enough to recognize certain words. Take a look at a game in Japanese and you'll see that a lot of ingame menus are in English.

they don't use kana keyboards. they can either type non japanese words an it will show up as suggestion, they can use a command that turns whatever they typed into latin letters, or they can switch keyboard to writing in latin letters with a command. for example, if i write stupid with the keyboard set to japanese, sつぴd shows up on the line, but the word stupid appears on the suggestion that you can select. it doesn't work for all words, but for something like a username that doesn't show up on the japanese suggestion dictionary, it will show up. or there's a keyboard shortcut that can turn what you typed into latin letters, hiragana, or katakana instantly.

they either use the swipe kana layout or the qwerty keyboard layout on mobile that can give suggestions or can type instantly to latin letters on pressing space. keyboard apps vary, but japanese mobile keyboards have this functionality.
