self-absorbed western individualism and narcissism. they didn't grow up being taught to appreciate the intangible things that are handed down to them like values, culture, and tradition, and so they don't care to nurture or develop them. worst of all is that they will refuse to participate in any form of shared culture building with the immediate people around them because they don't see how they share a society with their peers.

when they see a work of fiction that reflects their own lived experience of the society they inhabit and were raised in, they feel uncomfortable dissonance because they see themselves as not a part of it or above it. yet at the same time it's so familiar, it's like an uncanny valley. that creates a void in their heart that can only be filled by vicariously consuming works of fiction contextualized by completely foreign cultures.
