If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Reposting in new thread, after doing a few of these I found out that I have a habit of tilting the figure, how do I stop this? Is this an accuracy issue? I think my perspective is slightly off on the beginning which then throws off the rest of my construction.

>> No.6243064

>>6243053
If possible, flip your image horizontally as you're drawing to check. If your person is tilted, it'll be REALLY noticeable when you flip.

Then just start be aware of if you're tilting and you'll start to get an eye for catching it. I think there are other ways that involve looking at where the center of gravity is or something, but I haven't studied that so I can't really say.

Thumbnail is ok. Crosses over nipples is an appealing look that has stood the test of time. Vague political commentary is cringe and significantly cheapens your art, no matter how cheap it is to begin with. Head looks like part of it is lopped off but I feel like any objective problems with the anatomy are going to be things you don't care about since you slapped "daily mail" over the eyes. Anatomy in general is heavily smoothed-out and doesn't really sell that it's a person with bones and muscles, so I'd suggest doing some figure studies. Rendering is really fuzzy, not saying you have to have all hard edges but your edge control is not very good.

Did you enjoy making this? It doesn't give the impression that you did. I think even brutal or depressing art gives a feeling of enjoyment or at least passion if it comes from a place of authenticity. Even practice/grinding has that sense in the way the lines are laid down if the person enjoyed doing it.

"Colour theory" is like 40% physics shit that isn't useful in art, 10% shit that people pretend is useful in art but actually isn't either and 49% pseudoscience. The remaining 1% is that cold light looks natural and warm light looks artificial, except a lot of younger people nowadays hardly ever go outside (or live in heavily polluted cities) and go to fast food restaurants with shitty fluorescent lights and think of it as being the other way around, where warm light is the "natural" light of home and cold light looks like a shitty restaurant or a hospital to them rather than the light of the sun and sky. The best way to learn what looks good (to (You)) is studies.

can a skilled artist make good art without layers or the paint bucket tool?
I have Krita and a drawing tablet(no screen on it so I need to look at the computer when I draw) but I find it easier to turn on my Nintendo DS lite and start up the Colors homebrew app on my r4 cart
it can change the brush size, transparency, color, there are a few brush types(fuzzy, bold, and spray paint), there is pressure sensitivity, there is 2x and 4x zoom, and I can save a project until I am ready to export it, but there is no eraser, paint bucket tool, or layers
here is a drawing I made at my current skill level of a male and female face, and the front and back of a male body, it is better than when I use a paper and pencil to draw because of zoom
https://litter.catbox.moe/40x9gr.png
I am worse when I use Krita because I can't look at my stylus when I draw

I feel like both of you are missing the point of (or failing to grasp the point of) construction. In the case of the full figure you simplified the forms all the way down to rectangular prisms and STILL got the perspective wrong (turned the large flat face toward the pov, and the rest of the body with it, taking a nearly side view into a 3/4 view, which because you drew the arm with the same 2D proportions as the reference means the size and position of the arm changed in your drawing, making it look very awkward and unnatural even ignoring that the boxes already look awkward and unnatural). In the case of the head, it's a very similar problem- The model is facing down, but while your placement of the nose and cheek is similar, everything else you drew facing more toward the pov, so the face just looks scrunched.

The whole point of drawing with construction from reference like this is to simplify forms to the point where you can clearly see the perspective on the reference object without it getting obstructed by your preconceived notions and expectations- For instance we are STRONLY biased toward imagining people facing us directly standing up straight in an A-pose, and will tend to draw people closer to that perspective and pose, straightening out and stiffening dynamic poses even when drawn from reference. You guys are both doing the same thing despite making very ugly rudimentary drawings entirely using the tool meant to help you NOT do that. Instead of just drawing the person but made of boxes, or drawing a bunch of lines all over the face, try to "see" those basic forms on top of the reference, conforming to the reference's orientation, and draw those.

As far as my head drawing goes the only glaring issues are the angle of the nose being wrong and the eyebrow line not curving down as much as it should, mostly due to the glabella being drawn a bit too narrow and sharp on the left side.
It's almost like the whole point of drawing dynamic poses like that is to get better at it and break out of those habits, I never said it was perfect but I was happy with how similar it turned out compared to the reference, and the fact that I can see and adjust the mistakes I made pretty easily means I just need to spend some more time doing the actual drawing and comparing it to the reference more.

Go do a basic Bargue plate and copy the damn lines accurately. Come back and block in the head without any bullshit system of head drawing. It will be way more accurate and you'll learn way more.

1. The lats do not end underneath the shoulder. They continue.
2. You have the rib cage curving before you reach her stomach area, on both sides. This never happens. The rib cage ends in it's objective matter, then the flesh sinks in and curves until it reaches the obliques.
3. On the arms, once the brachioradialis ends, the arm will never shrink smaller. In pic related, Bridgeman demonstrates how the end of the arm becomes a straight line almost, as the literal bone holds the shape of the arm after the larger muscle groups have ended.
4. Make sure you understand the difference between the rib cage and the lats, and how they turn into the arms.

Hopefully this gets the point across. You have a couple of parts of the face pointing down like in the reference, but other parts are pointing closer to forward, so it looks like a completely different person. Given the simplicity of the construction there isn't much of a "pose" or expression in the first place, it's just an angle, so I think getting things like the cross contours of the nose and the mouth to chin distance and the chin/cheek angle and the angle formed by the wedges of the glabellum and nose correct is very important for the kind of study you're doing.

just go with a good anatomy/figure book like hamptons design and invention copying stuff from it as warmup and using the method of building the figure from simple gesture and shapes he shows in first chapters
just focus on drawing 3D shapes, forget details, you are already going in that direction so you are ahead of a lot of the dumbasses

just keep up drawing daily mixing stuff for fun with studying the figure/anatomy book and focusing on building solid 3D shapes like you see in that book
at your level its mostly about pure mileage on the fundamentals instead of specifics

and to answer the "should i do x if all i want is draw cute animu" just learn general fundamentals and you will draw whatever you want, its called fundamentals for a reason
but if you want to draw anime stuff then do it in the fun part of your drawing time and not on the study part

You should do Bargue plates perpendicular to your viewpoint, even leaning it against the edge of the desk you're sitting at might be sufficient, but it's nice to be able to get up and step back and view it from as far away as you can. It helps to see the larger masses of light and shadow so you can fix things up that way.

If you are going to buy a drafting table, get one that you can tilt almost vertically. However, these are super heavy, and super expensive.

Loomis and most teachers practice a completely different style to gesture drawing than Vilppu - who is much more about movement than construction. Is there any reason to grind to perfect Vilppu's style when I'm just interested in anatomically correct figure drawing with *some* dynamism. I don't care about drawing dancers on the page but there is a certain beauty to it.

It appears like Vil's requires a really solid understanding of anatomy before you can start simplifying into 'flows' or whatever, while Loomis expects you to build up from the gesture into the figure (and with it your knowledge of anatomy).

You don't need any anatomy, proportion, or anything but semi-decent line control to do Vilppu's gestures. If anything it'll get in the way of absorbing what he's actually trying to teach, which isn't "simplifying" the form but drawing the flow (aka the gesture) of the pose. Look at the lines here - they flow into each other in a way that suggests movement and form, each leading to the next naturally like water moving through a river.

Also gesture isn't something you perfect somebody else's style for, it's how you personally see the lines of action in a figure. Everyone is going to see it differently and click with different ways of expression, so try them all. Just make sure you're doing them daily.

You're getting it backwards. By improving at sensing the flow, you improve at proportion and seeing the greater volume. Hey thanks anon I took another stab at it, I definitely like the idea of adding contour lines at the end. Forcing myself to use pen really helped here, since I have to be deliberate.

How do I balance these fetishes, that I should mention are entirely unrelated to black girls, with the fact they they're stereotypically assigned as black people infatuations?

I have a small folder of the grayscale/monochrome photos that anons posted on /ic/ as study materials, usually found in those study/photo ref threads. Sometimes someone will post a nice looking old master painting and I'll do an "underdrawing" for it so that I understand the rudimentary compositional elements of it, ignoring anything too detailed and just going for the big gestures of the figures, large placements of the environments or light focused areas, that sort of a thing.

As for NMA, I don't use it. I just google up "portrait photo NMA" or "figure reference NMA" and usually I find something on google images that's big enough for me to copy.

Hope this helps!
