IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Mouth would much higher. Its always below the nose and higher above the chin.

The jaw changes angles several times. It's kind of wierd because it's a angled, and most people aren't sure if they are drawing flat perspective or angled perspective. Either way it isn't a flat line that connects the chin to the ears as your image conveys. Find a way of drawing jaws you like.

I should murder, murder everyone, make they feel pain, regret, fear. The ultimate work of art, the only reason why god created this earth. Human suffering. If you can't see this you might as well be blind. It all makes sense, I can see, I can see everything, from the furthest star to the darkest of depths. The design, the divine design created by the original motor, the raw creativity of the universe, the thing that drives everything from the very beginning to the end of eternity. I know, I know not with thoughts, number, words, or anything that can be transcribed directly in to this quickly written rambles, I know trough emotion, like a feeling that flares and flashes from the very core of what I'm truly am, the being in the very center. Pain and suffering, so beautiful, radiating, giving color and shape to everything else, so incredible beatifull. as an artist, how can I not want to paint with this idea as god does? I know, I know as I know my own name, As know what I'm, what needs to be done, what I should do. But I'm afraid, not ready yet, I will wait, I will wait and get stronger, better, slowly sharpening the little I have that can be sharpened, in the dark, waiting, waiting for the right moment, to make true art.

Her bangs don't follow gravity, they should fall on this angle.

do you use construction? they appear to lack basic proportions. Like agent smith nose is way too low. If you look at any picture of him, measure the eyes to the nostrils and the nostrils to the mouth. It's roughly the same distance. This is similar in all four drawings in that the distances between landmarks is slightly off.

Despite this, you did capture all four likenesses fairly well. I can tell who they are at a glance. I recommend working on individual facial parts. The nose and ears are really weak and sizes vary drastically from the left and right ear on each person you drew. The boys guy came out well with the shadows helping mask some errors. again, look at distance from eyes to nose and nose to mouth or use plum line from the tear duct or pupils down to the mouth to get some basic landmarks (most eyes line up at corners of mouth, but some are slightly outside/insider).

Also, be careful with angled heads. Smith eyes are flat and basically facing forward. They arent following perspective of his 3/4 head shot. Cavill's are similar, though his head tilt isnt as extreme. 5th element guy's eyes are almost perfectly horizontal despite his face being tilted on angle. His right eye should be lower/follow the angle of the head tilt. His left eye looks correct in comparison.

Again, there are serious flaws, but, at the same time, they did come out resembling the people and immediately identifiable. That's something to be proud of. Capturing the different eye shapes really makes portraits pop despite flaws. If you want to learn how to do basic blocking in with loomis or reilly method, Bradwynn Jones is quite good at explaining it and helping you measure and identify relationships between the different anatomy of hte face. https://www.youtube.com/c/BradwynnJones is his channel. Easy to follow along with. He does the loomis/reilly hybrid method for starting and then renders most of his portraits either in same video or a followup.

Anatomy construction and perspective just teach you what you will eventually realize by many many hours of drawing and observation.

It's up to you how in depth you want to go studying these subjects, but the basics of perspective, construction and anatomy are quite helpful and easy to learn.

Don't bother unless you can draw trad. I wasted about 5 or 6 months worth of progress by starting digital before just sitting down with a pencil and paper and learning to draw.
If you can draw, then yes, it's well worth it to go to digital just to save money on paint and be able to play with colors and textures you wouldn't or couldn't in trad.

gestures are naked form. you dont normally gesture clothing. you get the form underneath and when you build your figure or final sketch, you put whatever clothing you want over your gesture (which is now a full sketch).

like for the front guy, theres a clear S-curve from front curving on his hips to that back leg. 2nd red guy has a plum line from his head to the straight/weight bearing leg and a curve gesture for his moving leg. you can basically trace an S-cruve from back to front of hips and their back legs in all 3 front guys. you use this to exaggerate or capture the motion as you see fit without worrying about their robes and what not. when you are happy with a gesture drawing, you can then build on it. you wouldnt have to do full torso construction, etc if you are experienced from here. youd just do like a triangle down to above the ankles, etc and build out the clothing and drapery stuff from there.

but the gesture was still the basic S and C curves and straight lines of the form beneath. thats more traditional gesturing. really comes down to your experience, how you build a drawing, etc.

Yes, but I can't recommend it to hobbyists or beginners because you have to hyperfocus on drawing for HOURS, and is a very intensive form of studying. you can give it a whirl. But your time is better spent doing figure drawing, learning construction, and making doing things that makes art an enjoyable experience for you. Seriously, if you didn't have the discipline from DAB/Dynamic Sketches you're getting hard filtered.

No problem with anime heads. Just keep going, study the proportions with Loomis or whatever you want, and don't ignore your other fundamentals along the way. But you need to start with drawing for fun so it's no biggie.

Do you remember that one kid at school who only ever drew one thing? And in one particular style? You don't want to just draw a really sophisticated symbol. What I see in that tomoko head is a lack of form and perspective. It's not really 3D. Which can be fine, but if you want to improve at drawing overall just make sure that's not the *only* type of drawing you do.

Okay so here's the deal. I feel like I have a good grip on the proportions and where everything lies in an average male head, but the problem is that I have no idea how to illustrate them. Like for example, it took me so many tries just to get the jaw right, and that's literally just two lines. Is this something that gets better as I, "just draw"? Or is it something else?

Lastly, what books/videos would you recommend to someone at my level? I was thinking of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Proko's vids and some other ones teaching basic fundamentals, but wanted a second opinion.

>>6098475
I get what you mean, and I used to think that way, but you can't 'skip' gesture - it's simply an element of the pose. Your proportions are fine but you've actually done the opposite of exaggerate the pose. The arms and supporting leg are straighter in your construction, which is what you expect when seeing someone standing.

Another way to think of it is that drawing the gesture first is just a tool to capture the dynamism of the pose quickly when drawing from life, just like anatomy and construction are tools to simplify drawing the extremely complex shape of a human. Don't follow it blindly any more than you would trace a photo blindly.

Fanficfag here. This is my copy work from yesterday and today. It's kind of a mishmash experience topped off with a freakout because I'm a fucking schizo panic depressive who is angry that every copy was getting worse as the morning went, and I don't actually know what to ask on advice for rn so imma keep writing and think about it

Things I think I learned drawing it
-This character seems to start from the bandaid on her cheek, as that shape lead neatly to the hair, the cap, the jaw, and then the larger face involved. Maybe 'start' is the wrong word, this is a show done in layers and stuff, but I found that working outward from that square builds, if not accurate then more accurate copies.
-The cap's seam on the top matches on an invisible line with the flaps, and if these weird ear bowls weren't in the way they'd probably be a straight line. I can't really do it because pen lol but I wonder if drawing the cap without the ears and then drawing the ear things on top is better. (it makes sense that that would be a separate layer, they change color based on what school of magic you study)

I'm still having trouble replicating the head dimensions, namely the cap, and I got tilt. I know I'm not gonna have this down with three days of sporadic scribbles and be as good as a Disney storyboard... but like, I should be, y'know? Like, I should just be able to do it.

So then I wrote all this, calmed down, did another go, it was looking better and those FUCKING ear saucers ruined the whole GODdamn thing so...

I guess that's what I should work on then, getting the cap right? Do I need to just color in the print out of the face and draw that blob, is that was meant by the silhouettes? Should I just grid it or something? Hell I should just ditch the goddamn hat but that's a whole other can of worms, (she's a BG character, there's no canon hairstyle and I can't imagine what it would look like). I guess I don't know what to do next, and Loomis's still unavailable, so, idk HAAALP

perspective grids go up as well. create your verticals and an actual grid and you can get your table height and length correct. You can then place characters relative to the table height and size.

david finch is a comic artist with some good videos for perspective. check his channel archives for them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub19UehR8rc - this is one where he places people and shows how to approximate their size relative to the scene he created. You can see the grid he creates. Obviously, he does the full grid for the viewer, but once you understand it, you can just pu tsome rough guidelines in and build up from it or use a backlit grid underneath so you dont have to draw all the time and other hacks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcXv_scq6UM - another video with similar stuff

he does bunch of basic perspective for 1pt and 2pt as well. think youd benefit from learning how to place objects properly in the perspective and getting the scale correctly. its not just having the edges of the table going to the vanishing point.

Dodson called pencil as PIANO of drawing tools aka its a tool which can do literally everything there is in gray scale pictures. Thin, thick lines, dark or light shadows, crosshatching, making complex textures, smudge the lines with finger or erase them, it can even showcase the texture of paper under it.

>TURN YOUR PIC INTO GRAYSCALE and notice all colors have same value.
You're not entirely wrong in this case but note that there are different methods of greyscaling (in terms of programming; which method is which or available varies depending on software) and for example some will make FFFF00 yellow and FF00FF magenta the same value when greyscaled even though the yellow is actually a lighter value (or the same for FF0000 red vs 0000FF blue, for example). For that and many other reasons it's a good idea to just learn about colour theory and practice spotting value differences by eye.

>>6100135
You don't actually need both but generally you should at least have one or the other. It has to do with how our eyes adjust to lighting (by expanding and contracting the iris, and through alterations to our perception). Your eyes always adjust so that something in what you're looking at appears fully black, and usually so that something appears fully black while something appears fully white. If you don't have that in a rendered image the effect becomes muddy and washed out (which can be useful, if it serves what you wish to convey; there are times when it is appropriate to break all rules). Also applies more to digital images than traditional media paintings, but that is not to say it DOESN'T apply to the latter- only that the surrounding lighting where they are displayed might be taken into consideration.

That isn't that pillowy. Looks more like the lightsource is behind and a bit to the left, and with that assumption only some parts are shaded incorrectly. Where pillow shading is really an issue is where you have things like for example flat or slightly curved surfaces and you either shade or highlight all sides of the surface/only the middle. Only place I notice you did that was on the tubes of the spaceship(?), though the shading on the tails of his trench coat are kinda off too unless they're meant to be curling back to the left. Don't be afraid to use more hard shadows too, though. An easy way to have both kinds of shadow is to shade/highlight on new layers, and erase with a hard-edged eraser where you want hard edges. I've also seen people use the lasso tool to define where the edge will be, but I think that's less convenient and intuitive.

That is too strong word. If you know what are you doing you can easily use dark picture which has no white for character sneaking in midnight trying to steal something or even super bright pic for being ascending into heaven or something like that.

But if you dont know what are you doing and just color you pic like that anon, it simply looks like ass. Using gray scale is easiest to spot it because your brain can then easily see the missing values.

Pic related: from original to white only to grey only to black only.

See right here, anon added some darker tones and suddenly it looks way better >>6100161

Dads friend, who had ties to a place that rejected me quite badly, asks for a poster design from him which he relays to me. Zero dollarydoos and plays the "come on anon, ya dad really needs ya to do this" card. I accepted it anyways since the design follows a principle i've never touched but always had an interest in (futurism). Find out later I have to postpone my scheduled stuff to get it done. When finished it looks understandably generic as FUCK. No word from dads friend yet. Showed mom who responded with "ooh yeah."
I obtained nothing but lost time, motivation and possibly respect. If the cunt wants more shit I'm refusing. Sorry for the vent

You know a lot of people use tablets in 3D modeling right? Both for sculpting and general workflow.
Anyway, here are a few suggestions.
>If you just want to draw for fun, consider getting a pen and a sketchpad and doing traditional. Many, many people find physical media easier to control and work with. The Pilot Metropolitan is a cheap fountain pen and getting that and a bottle of Platinum Carbon ink will cost less in the long run than buying an equivalent number of disposables (and speaking from experience it'll still wow normies). As disposables go, I don't care for the ever-popular Microns; They run out of ink quickly, they're overpriced, and while their strength is ultra-consistent line width, that's also their weakness. I prefer felt tips: Cheaper, more ink, better line weight control.
>Make sure you have stabilization turned down very low or simply off in whatever software you're using. It keeps your lines from having little bumps in them but doesn't stop them from wobbling and on the other hand absolutely does fuck up the lines you intend to make, and for some reason it's on (and really high) by default in a lot of software.
>On that note, you may be using shitty software, and that can heavily affect UX. Best free option is Krita but also check out Autodesk Sketchbook (it's the best-optimised software I've tried by a long shot, including paid options, so there should be virtually zero pen lag even on a shitty computer, which can make it easier to make the lines you want to make).
>If disabling stabilization doesn't work, specifically practice line control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaif0PpNMas
>For eyes in digital media, lasso the first eye, copy and paste, flip the pasted selection horizontally, drag it over next to the other side of the face, and try to match that eye. Most people struggle with symmetry; eyes are just where it's most obvious.

I mostly just draw, and I do studies when there's something specific I decide I need to improve. I try to do at least one study a week, even if it's just redrawing something I've drawn before or some shitty reference posted on /ic/, though. Good to keep those observational muscles toned. For a beginner I'd probably recommend making a list of the things you're worst at (whether it's specific body parts, line control, colour theory, shading or whatever) and study one thing a week, at least once a day four or five days of the week; Otherwise spend your drawing time just drawing. It may not feel like it but the "just drawing" part isn't just to keep it fun, it helps build general skill and to cement what you're learning in your studies.

Don't forget to take breaks, too. Sometimes if you take a week off you'll find you're a lot better when you come back to it. Bad habits decay but knowledge doesn't, kinda. Doesn't mean take every other week off or take six months off or something, but maybe a week every few months, plus a couple of days a week if necessary (if you draw every single day you're liable to burn out, especially if you're also drawing eight hours a day; 40 hours a week is a standard fulltime job for a reason). But there's a good chance you're drawing less than that, anyway.

Goes without saying, room temp friendo. People don't struggle half as much with 3/4 view, which is why it's widely regarded as the easiest perspective to draw people.

Apart from the conclusion that you should learn to judge value by eye (which you're an absolute retard if you disagree with- do you think traditional painters just set the painting to greyscale, retard?), everything I said is non-qualitative objective fact, so if any of it were wrong you'd be able to refute it with evidence pretty easily.

You absolutely do not need black or white in your image. Yes your eyes do adjust to lighting, but that does not make your eyes' dynamic range suddenly irrelevant. Let alone while viewing digital media (to which as you said your retard theory applies more to) which is by nature a light emitting medium.

>> No.6101242

>> No.6101260

>It has to do with how our eyes adjust to lighting (by expanding and contracting the iris, and through alterations to our perception). Your eyes always adjust so that something in what you're looking at appears fully black, and usually so that something appears fully black while something appears fully white. If you don't have that in a rendered image the effect becomes muddy and washed out (which can be useful, if it serves what you wish to convey; there are times when it is appropriate to break all rules). Also applies more to digital images than traditional media paintings
So this was just something irrelevant you randomly decided to add for fun then? No need to get so defensive just because you probably watched a half-informed youtube video and then presented it as

>Your eyes always adjust so that something in what you're looking at appears fully black, and usually so that something appears fully black while something appears fully white.
Let's go with a hypothetical so a retard like you can understand. If you were in an infinite expanse of grey, your eyes would not adjust it to be white or black. Not through "contracting of the iris" or "alterations of your perception". Your iris dilates and contracts to regulate how much light passes through to the sensory tissue. Looking at an image be it a painting or a screen (a literal window of light) will not cause any change in your iris that's not how human vision works. If you were in pitch darkness assuming your iris had time to contract and saturate the retina with rhodopsin then your rods take over, you might still not see the painting, but looking at a screen the bright almost whites would be seering and look pretty pure until your rods adjust and the iris has time (it takes time it would not be instant) to dilate. From then on you would not see the non pure white as pure white. Your iris does not adjust to every image you see neither does your sensitivity globally change every time, that would strain your eyes immensely. This is why if you look at a bright light and look away you will see an afterimage.

If the lighting conditions don't change the only thing that the eye will adjust when looking at the brightest part of the image (or the darkest) is how much detail you can make out within it just because our focus IS actually selective and adjusts instantly unlike our broad "exposure".
