Recommend you to tale your time. The strokes look hasty and you use the same brush, speed and attention for anything and everything. This does not give the material (copper and flower) it's own identity. Well the yellow flower has it but it's the wrong choice: Your paint is killing the flower. Too many random and lazy-curved strokes are seen. Some parts within the green are really nice!

Well, certain artists have historically painted dead flowers and rotting fruit in order to make their SL's say something about the time they live in, etc etc.
But why on earth would you paint some dead looking little weeds when you're not Caravaggio?
SL is all about teaching yourself new things; new ways of mixing colours, new compositions, new lighting concepts, how to paint the texture of every damn thing you every come across. So when you paint real live humans in the flesh you aren't fumbling around trying to mix a flesh tone, or the hair colour, or wasting time trying to work out how folds work, or how to paint fur on clothes (or animals), or the how to compress the millions of different patterns and values on that there candlestick or mirror, or window. Then you can progress to painting outside and you only have to contend with wind, flies, people talking to you, the sun going in and coming back out after you've tried to chase the effects and shadows, fruitlessly. But at least you know how to mix the colours, kind of, because you never really painted enough green things, or brown things, or blue things, indoors. And the clouds keep moving, and so do the sheep and cows.
Solve all that and then you're GMI.

I tried lifting the forehead a bit. Better or still too low? I think it might still be too low lol.

I also redid the hatching on the side of the skull and on the jaw, tried smudging some.
It’s difficult to get the values/rendering right, it’s a balancing act of what details to render and where to put contrast and where not to, based on multiple considerations that interplay. Like how do I deal with a receding are like the inside of the socket? Or the side of the skull, how detailed should the hatching be seeing as its an area that’s farther away and out of focus? And should I render all the teeth individually or only bring out certain ones, and if so which ones?

There’s also something about the proportions that feel off to me, the features seem misaligned somehow, but I can’t put my finger on it. :/

anyone have a “how to mix paint on the palette for absolute certified retards” type guide? I keep contaminating everything and I feel like I’m wasting paint if I have to clean the brush every time I reach into the pure pigments

>> No.5239210

>>5239084
thinking about wasting paint is pretty much a 100% guarantee for fucking up. when you paint wet into wet you really have to load your brush up with paint, then only do a couple of strokes, or else you start making mud. So youre basically squeezing as much paint into your paper towel as putting on the canvas.

>> No.5239427

>>5239084

What medium are you using? The solution to this problem is largely paint in tubes plus a palette knife for easy separation. Id est: you place the the paint down in a well on your palette, then use the palette knife to nab a piece of paint like a dab of butter and place it in your mixing area. Then you wipe off the palette knife and use the brush.
You still need to clean brush and knife, but you get less muddy pigments this way.

W&N are excellent.
Too many colours. What are you painting? Landscapes, portraits?
Most things you can try a triad such PR206, PB29, and Cad yellow hue in your set.
Many things can be painted with just a dark warm and cold, such as burnt sienna and ultramarine. For a lot of practice try just those colours if you are new to watercolour.

Get some W&N artist sable brushes, round size 4, and a larger brush for washes such as Prolene round size 8 or 10. Two decent brushes will do a lot of the work to start with.

Any recommendations on good oil colors to get? I've started from a standard set of mostly prime colors, plus burnt sienna. Thinking of getting some Phtalo turqouise to complement my ultramarine and primary blue. What's a good red and yellow to get to complement primary ones?

>> No.5249855

What reds I use depend on what I'm painting.
I don't paint a lot of landscapes right now, but when I was, I'd use an earth red or two, but have ditched those for flowers and skin tones.
I use mostly cad red light, cad red, and carmine as a AC replacement. Will break out magenta for some flowers.
Yellows, apart from earths, cads, very very rarely Indian yellow, although it does get you fabulous green and turquoises with blues.

Some people have opted to swap them out for 'eco' reasons these days, but their pigment is high and they are opaque, which is generally what you want unless you want to do glazing.
If you want to paint 'alla prima' rather than Old Master style with a dead layer etc, then opaque's are the most useful. But I keep earth colour which are transparent for the early stages, as they dry fast, and sometimes viridian. Viridian and transparent oxide red make a fantastic dark, good for flowers, landscapes and figure/portraits.

Makes sense. I'd probably go for a cad yellow and maybe a cad red, depending on the prize.

After some time doing the Watts gouache course, I am pretty sure I got the wrong brushes.
He recommended Robert Simmons synthetic brushes (only descriptor he gave is “short handle, brown with gold tip”) and said watercolor brushes are too nice and soft and you need something harder. I’m got some van gogh watercolor brushes since they were the only synthetics in the shop and were cheap, but I think I’m fighting the brush too much, his barely give on any stroke, mine feel like pentel brushpens.
I can’t find the Robert Simmons brushes anywhere, and I’m in Europe, are there any cheap(ish) brushes I should look for? I found 2 (two) of Robert Simmons brushes on Amazon, and that’s it.
I’d go to feel out the brushes, but the van goghs I got felt very firm too before I put them in water

Every single picture has a traced under drawing. The same as 99% of youtube artists/ all artists. I do it sometimes for speed, but I can paint without too. Don't make out your 'friend' is some genius, they're just average.

I don't get tracing, if I ever do something like that it's to mark down proportions, then I draw from reference within them. And even that's a sacrifice for speed, as a good understanding of what you're drawing and tweaking it to your liking is far superior.

Yes that's what I mean, I mark off a few key points to save on making adjustments.

I’ve never seen him trace an original image once.

I’ve only ever seen him use boxes. Like a grid on his reference, a grid on his page. Does that.
