I do believe using real life as ref is more useful than photos. In my experience the studies I make from life are always somehow livelier and more interesting to look at than the ones where I used photos, no matter what method I used to reference the photo.
So if you have the money to blow on a model (or can get someone like a gf to pose) go for it. Another plus is that no one will find your reference online and start sperging at you for cheating or stealing.
