Where/what should you recommend i start learning animation?
I’ve been thinking making short loop gifs for a start either sfw or nsfw.
Im also planning to buy the CSP (not the pro one), i’ve noticed theres also many tutorial videos in their home page for tools

Some would recommend you Animator's Survival Kit, indeed it is as good as people say. Also if you're learning CSP, you can search Naoki Yoshibe's book on /ic/archive (search his name). He teaches you how to make animation on CSP EX, also you can download the CSP materials he created from the site too. By the way, CSP Ex is cracked and you can find it on /ic/ archive as well. But if you want to support celsys, I recommend waiting until they have another big sale (maybe in March/April).

Everybody should watch out to bump this thread. Animation is a lot of work so work is posted less frequently, and theres less people animating than just drawing illustrations. Also, most of us probably have this pinned so theres no way to tell when its about to die other than the amount of hours since the last post. I think around ~10 hrs is a good time to bump

Oh, you're on iPad? Then the materials from the book probably wouldn't work on mobile app, I use trial version on my S6 lite too so we're on the same boat. I kinda hate the idea of subscribing plan though. But still, maybe it's worth it if you don't have pc/laptop. Komugiko2000 even made his animation short movie and MVs on iPad.

I would recommend getting a gengashuu so you could learn from it, like Yutaka Nakamura's animation work. Planning to buy it if once I got money.
But then again, you could grab materials for free from sakugabooru too, watching video and action movies for reference is also important. Lastly, maybe you should try posting your work on twitter as to catch the community's attention, from there you probably could get many friends from ZettaiAbsolute circle who can teach you more.

Sadly, there is no Norio Matsumoto's gengashuu. But I'll try to remember if there's any gengashuu with Norio's KA in it.

Yutapon's gengashuu is around 41 USD + shipping. Amazon shipping cost is real bitch, even shipping to SEA cost me around 20 bucks alone before tax, which will cost me another extra 10 bucks, well at least they use DHL and it's extra fast, like 3-6 days to my place. But it's kinda understandable since Animestyle gengashuu is real thick. I have Mitsuo Iso's gengashuu volume 2, it's real thick and Yutapon's is even thicker. It's b4 size and about 3 cm thick. Plus it has two flipbooks, which is amazing. I have to buy from yahoo auction for Mitsuo Iso's gengashuu + flipbook, costed me like 70 usd, so yeah, I'm broke right now.

>> No.5192721

>>5192684
Also, mandarake is great place if you're looking for used stuff. The shipping cost is also cheaper and I didn't even get taxed. Bought FLCL gengashuu and Star Driver gengashuu from there, only costed me around 60 USD including shipping for two books. That's a steal desu.

just do it in photoshop you ape. make a timeline frame animation, all the layers should have propagate frame 1 turned on in the layer panel. first hide the layers you're going to use in frame 1 then toggle propagate off. basically anything on frame 1 you don't want to copy over to the other frames. you only have to do it for the layers you want to show from frame 1 so you dont have to worry about toggling propagate off on every layer, just the layers on the first frame.

dumb question but how does an animator measure the length of a short before animating? lets say I want to animate something that is following the beats of music, how do I set up a big "canvas" that has all the key points with the music then start to animate on top of that?
or rather how do I know how much time my frames are taking, how to shorter or enlarger the time etc

>> No.5211099

>>5211090
The standard frame rate for animation is 24 frames per second.

>> No.5211135

>>5211090
I'm not sure exactly what your question is. If you're animating something exactly to music, your timing is determined almost entirely by the bpm of the song and when notes occur in the music.
For more complex actions, you can simply act it out yourself (or film yourself at 24fps) and count frames.
You can also scrub through the audio and mark down when accents/actions/keyframes should occur. Almost all your keyframes will be on downbeats.
For sync, animate dead-on to the music, and when you're done at the very end try shifting the visuals earlier than the music by one or two frames. Usually looks better.

For motion graphics/digital work that's not frame-by-frame and gets interpolated by After Effects, a dirty trick I like to use is to set the framerate to something "weird" that's a clean multiple of the bpm. The renderer will interp to 60fps at final export. e.g. drum and bass at 175 bpm -> 175/60 beats per seconds ->35 fps, 12 frames per beat. This has the benefit of no sync drift, and actions on 16th notes and triplets are very easy to time at 3/4 frames respectively.

>> No.5211664

>>5211090
I'm gonna assume whatever program you use has audio scrubbing, so just import the audio you want and boom, it'll not only show you how many frames the audio takes up but you'll also be able to just go through the audio and listen so you can create keys on beats.

> how do I set up a big "canvas" that has all the key points with the music then start to animate on top of that?
do you mean an animated storyboard?
most storyboarding specific software ive used in the past lets you drag the length of drawings to be shorter or longer, and import a background track. Pic related (not my work).
You can get a rough idea of the timing of your animation that way, just by eyeballing it. look into storyboarding software, or do your animated storyboard in your animation program, or do it the old fashioned way on paper and time those boards to music later with editing software.
then, import your animated storyboard video into your animation software. break it up into each shot by cutting up your animatic.
that way, youll be able to animate each shot in its own file, and when you stitch them all together again in the edit, the timing/ amount of frames will be the same as your animated storyboard.
Just make sure your storyboard is the same fps as your animation- dont export your storyboard at 25fps and try to animate at 24 fps because you'll fuck your timing

>>5211135

I am looking for someone to do a simple animation of an explosion of blood turning into this image. So it will all be in the same color. I would ideally like three of these (two more final blood images will be provided). The blood would be coming from a single source above the splat, you can imagine someone is standing there and then gets blown up, blood flies in all directions and splats onto the ground creating the image depicted in pic related.

Do animators use a skeleton/mannequin abstraction to rough in the character model? I've been advised to do this in my class but when I look at Richard Williams and Eric Goldbergs books they either don't use them or they advise against using them because it makes the characters too rigid (something 3D has to actively avoid).

I assume professional animators draw their characters from every angle hundreds of times before they even animate them so they can get the construction and volume correct rather than rely on skeleton abstractions.

>> No.5222654

>>5222650
It doesnt have to be a specific manequin/skeleton design just any kind of shorthand way to draw the character. Draw them 100 times ans youll naturally develop a fast sketchy shorthand way to draw them.
That way you wont spend a long time drawing each frame during the rough stage where more than likely youll need to make changes, delete/add frames etc.

I have done the same mistake, but layouts are actually one drawing of the start of the shot, for things like a really special cut theh would kove right to genga after doing the one frame. The idea, as I understand it now, is that layout helps flash out the composition from the board, and genga the animation, and if you try to guess away the motions in layouts it hurts the final result.
Sweet work either way

>> No.5227836

>>5200545
Very. Imagine the timing in your head and use notation to think about the motion beforehand. You will have enough tweaking even after that, but that woukd significantly reduce the hassle and let you create more complex things

>working in flash for the first time
>want to do a little musical thing so importing audio
>have to lower the audio hrz or whatever so flash accepts it
>successfully import the song into flash
>song is slowed down like 60% for some reason
>reconvert multiple times, song either won't import to flash or if it does get in, is slowed down
what the fuck is going on, ive been googling like crazy and it seems like next to no one has had this issue

>> No.5231657

>>5231622
I beileve it's either the imported file's format being bad or you have to change it in the publishing options in the tabs

I had that issue many years ago but forgot exactly how I fixed it sense, but I'm aware to make the music at least not sound like midi files you have to change it in the publish options to MP3 or Raw. And I'd suggest importing Mp3s or OGGs files instead of wavs unless it's for short sound effects, which do the inveres, wavs instead of MP3s. Oggs for short sounds I don't know.

At this point I don't mind the music having shitty audio quality, as long as it actually plays at its proper speed. If I try to export the song (which is like 1 min 5 seconds) as an MP3 at 8000 Hz, it will give me an error that says I can't export it at that size and I'll need to up it to at least 32000 Hz, at which point it wont be accepted by Flash. It's either not getting in, or if it gets in, its slowed down and I have no idea why.
One newgrouds forum post from like 2012 said I should try raising the kbps in properties, but messing around in this menu hasn't actually changed anything either.

>> No.5231700

>>5231679
Damn, this looks different than how I remember it. Guess this version is newer than the version I used back in the day
I do remember another was was via right clicking on the audio file itself in the library but that might not work either if this didn't

My last suggestion would be to use something like Audacity to resave the music file again, as a Mp3 or Ogg file, which will "reformat" the file and likely make it work with Flash properly. At least these are all the things I did back when I still used the program. Sorry if it doesn't end up working for you though, as it's been so long ago I don't remember much how to fix the sounds in Flash.

But I do remember though is that "181.4" of the original indicates how fast the music will play in real time, basically is why it's playing nearly 2x as fast as normal as you said before. It has to say 100% of original to play at the intended speed.

Hz -short for Hertz, is a measure of frequency in wavelengths per second. The higher the frequency, the faster it is. what you need to adjust is bitrate.

>> No.5234132

>>5231679
>>5233324
Hz is almost certainly the sampling rate, which is usually 44.1kHz for audio and 48kHz for audio tracks in video files.
I have no idea what is happening in his software but downsampling audio will have a drastic effect on quality because you cannot represent frequencies higher than half the sample rate in the resulting audio file.
At Anon's 5kHz audio file, no frequencies above 2.5kHz are present and speech will sound very muddy and muffled.

Looks good. I'd suggest investing a lighting set and making a background set that's not reflective, like your desk. Also, I think it'd move even better if you make her stumbles a bit, like she's trying not to fall backward and then passed out and fall forward instead. It adds more comedic feeling like Animist stop motion:
