IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:

You're legitimately doing fine for someone who started only five months ago. The reason people respond harshly to you is
A. The incessent spamming of the same pictures over and over
B. The constant complaining about learning art being difficult. Yes, its tough. It's tough for most of everyone. Most of the greats started shit.
C. Time and time again you've recieved advice and simply denied it for one reason or another. You need to have some patience with this shit. Art is probably the least 'instant gratification' hobby on the planet.
I want you to get better just like I want everyone on this board to, but you need to be patient. Understand that talent doesn't make or break an artist and the journey is different for everyone. Stop bellyaching about the negatives and try to focus on the positives. And if you're genuinely mentally ill like you claim, consider seeking proffesional help, as you'll be quick to discover most denizens of 4chan.org aren't exactly medically inclined.

Nice. Some tips you might want to try:
>less dark on top of trees, you might even want to not fully outline the branch and leave some "lost edges" to the background
>more darker bottom branches. Somewhat light bottom branches and somewhat dark upper branches leaves the form of the branches hard to follow.
>taller "spike" at the top and more branches covering the trunk of the tree, maybe one small downward pointing branch at the bottom to break the symmetry. Even if you are working from a reference it's sometimes better to change some things to make it more readable and "normal"
>add some background tone. Pure white signifies bursting light and just adding a quick flat tone to the background makes the drawing look more natural

not an expert, but my observation is you've put too much contrast on the side of the skull that's not facing the camera, and that is throwing things off the most

but more generally, your values have too much contrast

there's a valley running through the eyebrow ridges that flows down to the nose. the way you've shaded it, you can't tell it exists. your intuition to make that side darker is not entirely wrong, but it does not match the lighting in the reference and it does not give us the valley we want.

line art, very generally speaking, should be on boundaries where the form dramatically changes. and there's not enough change to warrant the line. you might say, "oh, i was drawing the seam, to show texture" and to that i would say your line needs to be lighter and thinner.

it's very difficult to get those gradients/values right, but it can be done with a lot of pushing and pulling on things

i painted over the left side of your drawing to demonstrate how things might be improved

I'd say it depends on what your goals are. Irrespective of style preferences, your first course of action should be to fix the eyes, since there are some serious symmetry issues. Regardless, the fact that you're even drawing puts you ahead of the pack. Keep it up!

It looks pretty good. I don't know what kind of style you're trying to achieve, but you may try varying the line weight. You might try drawing some lines thicker (the outer lines) and leave other lines lighter or even unfinished (like the jawline); otherwise it looks as if you were tracing. Keep it up, anon-kun

Your values are blown out. Your edges are messy and unclean. You need to start thinking of shadows as hard shadows when you lay them in, and then blend out what is supposed to be soft later. Eye reflection is in the wrong spot, look at anatomy of an eye, there is a particular spot over the iris, the lens, that sticks out from the rest of the eye and catches reflection.

Shoulders are too narrow, think of proportions. Ribcage seems long or not thought out. Pose is awkward, try doing it yourself and compare it.

yeah, you're overthinking things
you've got the "not invented here" mindset
like, i understand you want to be creative and inventive, and when you use reference it robs you off that feeling, but this is the dirty truth to art, man
it's rarely done completely in a vacuum

draw from reference, embrace it
occasionally try to draw from imagination
ask why it failed and use that to improve

Superbeg here, It's not been a long while since I've seriously started doing the drawing on the daily and pretty much the 1st time I post on /ic/, I'm sorry if I'm going to ask something that's been answered 1000 times before.

Drawing I and II is me trying to copy a reference without making any change. Drawing III is me giving a shot at a simple pose out of my mind.
As it's probably apparent, I'm bad at building up the boxy skeleton of a character out of my mind/figure drawing, expecially if the limbs are moving backwards or towards the camera.

And while I'm reading "prospective made easy" on the side, I find it really hard to apply the whole "draw a railway going in the distance" with the human figure.
I understand that once you can draw a box tilted backwards you can then draw an arm inside that box, but it matters little if the box is the wrong lenght/size. (wich I think it shows, for example, in the arms and legs lenght of the III drawing, being too stubby).
>Am I begging/asking stuff too quickly and should I just stick to drawing more shape skeletons and boxes?

Bonus: Beside the obvious "Hands/feet" (wich I haven't take time to study yet, so it makes sense I'm bad at it.) any immediate problems i should fix before getitng bad habits?
I couldn't fit the references but filename.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you struggling with foreshortening and want to know how to get better, and if it's possible?

First, yes, it's possible. Of course it is.

Second, I would draw a cube, and the face closest to the camera should be drawn first. Next, draw the back face and try to position it around the shoulder. Use the size of the shoulder to determine the size of this face.

The amount of foreshortening is a function of length of the arm and the position of the camera -- something like that. Don't quote me.

What this means is that the size of the face closest to the camera will determine it's length. The bigger the face, the closer it is to the camera, which means the body/shoulder/backface is further in the distance.

In other words, the bigger the hand, the longer the viewer will perceive the arm to be.

the single biggest thing that helped me understand drawing heads better, was understanding the planes of the face. The loomis head never worked out for me, but studying the specific planes of the head and the natural rhythms of the face helped me a lot. Shading is also a massive help when it comes to communicating the form of the face.

I highly recommend marco bucci's series of videos on planes of the head, as well as the asaro head model: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/asaro-head-9d26548182f8465a8e97371a9170561e

picrel is a study I did a few months ago trying to apply this knowledge. Im not claiming my picture to be any good, but it definitely helped me with my portraits a lot more.

Yes, I'm having problems with that. Is there resources that go in depth with that?

it's so individual. For me personally I draw much more with pen and paper and it's so much easier to pick up on a whim. I like just putting away all my drawings to the side and saving it for future reference. I like the friction on the paper and I like the each which I can just simply switch to another pen. Drawing is mostly in the mind and your mind-muscle connections though, so it translates well across medium. choose the one that makes you the most exited to draw.

I think you misunderstand. When learning anatomy, it is acceptable to test yourself by placing the muscles on a photo. You learn more this way than just always drawing it by hand and possibly reinforcing bad habits or bad understandings of anatomy. When you draw bone muscle and fat deposits over a photo, it is like solving a puzzle. It tests your knowledge, shows you where your knowledge is lacking, and reinforces proper proportion, placement, and distortion of muscles.

I studied anatomy the way you are suggesting for a very long time. It was not until I started drawing on top of photos and sculpting ecorches out of clay, that I realized all I was doing was stubbornly fucking myself over.

I'm not going to argue with one anon's results, but I strongly disagree. If yo are really unconfident with proportions then maybe I can see this approach being useful, but even then , carefully measured gesture drawing is probably even better. But I like to follow art like I do /fit/ gains, if you are showing noticeable gains, don't change a thing, you're doing great.

My qualm is that I think following a more intuitive approach to the figure is much better, like villpu or hampton does. If you find tracing to be helpful, then by all means..

so take my advise with a grain of salt

dont do what I did and watch like 30 video courses on gesture and not even draw
I started to try to draw in 2019 but all I really did was study and I barely drew
you can see how well that worked out for me...
the fact that the MEGAs are down was kind of a blessing because now I am forced to rely on only two books for gesture (that whole year I studied have me the ability to spot meme instruction books and books that are worth reading; one of them being Drawings from the Old Masters)
with books, you are less likely to binge on them and so you'll just draw with whatever time you spend not reading the books
at least that's what I think you should do
dont make the same mistake I did
prioritize drawing over learning and you'll save yourself frustration and time
