This. Just draw the rectangle, then find the length of the middle finger (which is the same length as the rectangle), then find the arc of the finger joints (from half the middle finger, then half of that again).

Drawing a simple cartoon hand is easy. This page is from a book published in the 1930s-ish.

I think my index finger needs some touch up, with the tip of it being too thin notably. Also the articulation on my pinky finger is too forward - would need to put it a bit more below.

5 months anon here
I think I failed here because on the left you see my first attempt using my faulty current understanding of gesture and pseudo construction using poorly planned shapes.
On the right I tried to be more accurate with my initial outline, the major shape and dared to use hatching to imply shadows and volume, this particular "style" I got it from some fanart but i failed and it looks messy.
Is there any potential in me to improve or was it a massive failure?

Relax faggot, i was busy. You are still not thinking in shapes. Before you even start cross hatching. Get the shapes right. Think of each fingers, and then see each shapes within the fingers. Before you shade it in. It will be wise to practise now, eventually you will be efficient with creating hands with any shapes. Think in shapes.

The size of the hand can be measured easily, use your thumb place it on your chin and use your middle finger to touch your forehead. That is the size. If you place your hand over your own face and spread it out, that is size of the hand expanding in width.

Use this trick or study golden ratio.

Anime hands are complex. Because they are also stylized to be thin and elegant. Loomis has a chapter about elegant hands you might want to pick up that specific chapter and yeet the rest.

I am a strong believer in getting your fundamentals but learning all the things you dont need will be too overwhelming even for professionals. Pick and choose your battle wisely. You can do it.
