5100156 No.5100156 [Reply] [Original]

The problem with how gesture is taught is that there's barely any focus on neutral poses. Almost all gesture demos you'll see will have the figure doing some weird flexible pose but in practice a lot of people won't draw those kind of poses unless they want to be an animator or comic artist.

The lack of focus on neutral poses like standing makes it really hard to maintain the "neutrality" of the pose while still drawing it with flowy gesture. This is worse in men where they'll look like fags if you draw them with gesture.

This same problem is present in perspective. We are so focused on drawing cities and foreshortening, we have little idea of how to apply perspective to just a guy standing.

Conversely I really hate the one "neutral" pose everyone does offer. The head-on and side-on. It's really hard to make look right when starting out.

Well first of all, there are only so many ways you can "pose neutrally" versus how many ways the body can contort or pause mid-action, so it makes sense that that wouldn't be the main focus. How many neutral poses do you need to draw before you know how to draw a neutral pose?

Secondly, gesture isn't taught using neutral poses because it isn't useful for that. If you can't draw a neutral pose with flowy gesture, then don't. Like Vilppu says, "Alter your approach according to the lay of the land," or something like that.

Also, is your image supposed to be an example of "neutral" or "weird"? Because they seem both easy to find and quite natural.

Sounds like you don’t draw from life if this is a “problem” for you.

Enroll in a life drawing class and sketch people going for coffee, leaning over to pick stuff up, walking around, kids playing in parks etc.

Quit relying on photo references and draw shit from real life nubcake.

>> No.5105368

No, and if you think that then you are too self conscious and that's something to work on. One simpler approach, and this will train your memory too, is to catch a glimpse of people-at-work, like say two construction guys chatting or whatever, and try to memorize as much as you can. Go somewhere, pull out your sketchbook, and try to recreate the gesture and then pile on the details you remember about how rugged their clothes were, what objects or props they interacted with, or if they were leaning on something. This is one of the harder modes of figure drawing, but it pays off and you can have fun with it.

Beginners start out being far too stiff and awkward, and not very observant. They draw their preconceived ideas rather than what they actually see. Starting with strong, exaggerated, forceful poses helps them to break that habit and become loose, expressive, and observant. Then they can reign that in to be able to accurately see and portray the more subtle weight, balance, and character of understated poses, where they would have just glossed over them before. "Neutral" poses are anything but, a person can stand in a countless number of ways.
If you want to have a great understanding of gesture, the very FIRST people you should look to are animators and comic artists. They have the strongest understanding of gesture out of all artists as a rule because their whole job is to portray characters that look and feel alive, that stand and walk and talk and move and breathe like a person. It's not all just wild, exaggerated movement.

>Conversely I really hate the one "neutral" pose everyone does offer. The head-on and side-on. It's really hard to make look right when starting out.

There is nothing neutral about those anatomy diagrams with their rigid military stance. A neutral pose is the way someone stands on a bus stop or at home. And that is exactly the kind of pose that the "gesture" teachers are unable to produce with their gelatinous, exaggerated wobbles.

Incidentally things like Google and Pinterest also give you mostly fake model poses. It takes a bit of searching to find reference pictures of people in truly neutral positions. Most people will be in a natural pose only when they don't know they're being photographed.

Reminds me of looking up musician poses to get the little details right only to find it's 90% stock photos of models who have never seen someone hold an instrument before, let alone held one themselves.
