Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

newfag to these threads here, the drawing on the right is with heavy reference, while the drawing on the right was drawn from memory. obviously i fucked up some stuff on both images, but i don't trust my own judgement very well so i'd like some critique.

there you go anon. You are not confident. Trust me it sounds crazy, but just having confidence in a line you make will actually make the drawing better. And also silly, you forgot if you have CSP, just turn your line art layer into a vector layer. That way it doesnt matter what and how you put the line down, because you can adjust the line by width, length and even move lines since well they're vectors. If you dont do anything at least do vector layers. Confident lines is honestly a time and experience thing.

the two at the bottom right are flat as fuck, it's obvious that you havent studied the face/head anatomy,i know that some anime faces look flat.... for the untrained eye but they still have some basic 3dp anatomy in it but i'ts stylized for example, the nose bridge being a few cm forward from the eye, the mouth while it's mostly drawn as an ''-'' actually follows the lips outline to convey form and in some cases it's actually just a fucking __,overall you have a really beg understanding of forms you should focus on learning every facial feature to have a great understanding of anime stylization or any other desu, the face is really hard to master im still beg but almost every gigabeg makes this mistake of skipping a more in depht study and just learn to deconstruct the face with very basic shapes/forms which usually becomes in: asymetric eye shapes, eyebrows, scheekbones, flat faces because they forget that cheeks and cheeckbones exist or the face is actually round and not a box.
You have made this mistake in all your drawings, the bad placement if the eyebrows you forgot that the nose bridge exist and it's form also the forehead is not all flat theres a curvature which the eyebrows follow, half of it or mayeb less but it does

tldr: your faces are flat and the eyebrows placement are wrong because you don't know the form of the nosebridge go study the face.

Sorry if that came off as defensive anon, reading it back it looks a little charged. My understanding of symbol drawing is drawing a symbolic representation of what you see, rather than the actual form that's there, in this case though, I'm just trying to draw the forms for construction, so I suppose it is symbol drawing in a sense, but I don't see how that's different from all construction based drawing, or what specifically I am doing wrong.

I don't really know how to do this with this anime head so sorry in advance.
I think I messed up but this is how I see it.
The anime head is missing things like eye lids, the area on the frontal bone where the eyebrows, procerus and corrugator muscles sit, a protrution for the zygnomatic bone, a proper mandible etc.
I feel like it's easier to get used to drawing skulls and then stylize it to anime.

That said please please please look at pin2D's anime head drawing tutorial. It will help you a lot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko3Zaw8zffk

If you want to learn anime heads in any angle get used to drawing the pin2d way of constructing and then use csp's models and pose in various agnles, that way you can build up a library of angles in your head.

Hold the phone anon, are you the one I gave my discord to a year back here? Because this looks strikingly similar.

I think you'd be better off just trying to improve your lines and confidence in your strokes rather than immediately draw faces at this point. you're not gonna get anywhere like this. There's a lack of coordination that would just make actual study impossible at this level.

sorry for lol-tier tutorial, but I don't really know what to add in there.

Really, just let your hand and arm flow and move around. it's a mindset. The exercises you get in the first pages of the dynamic sketching book are pretty good, if you do them on larger scales. Those lines tell me your strokes are slow and it makes your hand wiggle around- Try and be faster and bolder, while still being mindful of what you put down.

Slower, more controlled movements are for small details only.

There's a few things.

First of all, studies. But not really in the way you're doing. You place your guideline seemingly at random. These are supposed to help you place features correctly and follow the head structure. Pic relate, a quick example I did.

It isn't just tracing and moving on, you really have to analyze what is happening in order to re-do it. I still have some huge word documents filled with my face study notes, I recommend you really look into how the distances between the features and where they are placed proportionally to each other.

When you're confident enough, you can try and redraw the same exact faces and proportions at different angles or with different expressions. Stuff like that. Tinker around, have fun, but analyze everything.

The problem is I don't really know how to analyze. In the pin2d video, it seems like he just kinda knows where the line should already go, and does that. In your attached illustration, it seems like the middle of the ear (the canal) lines up with the bottom of the eyes, and the nose. The chin is defining the midplane of the face, with the contour line crawling up it. Like another anon stated, I have a hard time actually making a contour line that follows the form, it just doesn't "click" in my head. It feels more like I'm just guessing where that line should be, rather than actually drawing it.

Her neck is covered by the scarf and side bangs should I have made it longer? I feel like it's long enough. She doesn't have a long neck to begin with.
Her left arm is here, it's inside her jacket pocket, how should I have made her arm from that pose?
Didn't I get the leg proportion right, I don't know why the lower leg with the calf would be longer than the upper leg.
I've added a tilt to her body, she leans towards the viewer is it still stiff? I feel like if I made her bend more she'd fall over.

yes its still stiff. look at her left leg. shes seemingly standing straight on it with the other leg up like a flamingo. Try to achieve balance with the left and right leg.
Maybe consider having the right leg touch the floor for balance.

drawing through see pic.

feeling the form is more difficult. to feel the form, you have to actually KNOW it. that's why studying anatomy is so important. otherwise your drawing is a series of accidents. random shapes that you don't even understand are meant to be representing. when you feel the form flat shapes become volumes. volumes are the visible parts of forms, which are turning in space.

good question. if you 'draw through' enough, you'll eventually be able to translate two dimensional shapes, as pictured here, into three dimensional forms. it's easy for me to look at these simplified shapes and very quickly extrapolate the forms - cylinders, boxes, spheres - which they represent. this comes from drawing through a LOT. you force yourself to think in terms of depth.

these are very simple, but you can go into more depth with other resources for specific parts of the body and the principle is the same. figure out the basic forms, and you can construct and manipulate them in space. first with tedium, then intuitively. start with an easy subject like an insect or plant. there is a lot of room for error. watch this
https://youtu.be/22XYoenU-0c?t=643
(skip to 10:30 if it doesn't work)

depending on how refined you want to get, learning the proper forms for human anatomy might require life study. remember you have a set of hands, feet and such right in front of you that you can look at for reference. then you need either life reference or a giga shitton of reference images

>> No.5065274

use reference, don't symbol draw (not even objects). windows are usually not as simple as 田 lol
also scale is wack, nothing looks measured. next to a standing figure that window would look too small and too low. you should revisit perspective so you can measure everything out correctly in space relative to a figure
