Ok I've never watched Vilppu before. It's just an old guy talking to himself and clearing throat. There are many similar but much better videos on YouTube.

>> No.5041871

Watching this now after having taken his classes in the 90’s is a trip. Noticing the thing I’ve been tripped up on all this time is trying to copy the accidents of line, shape and tone from my momentary POV instead of using the model as a jumping off point. Super comfy to hear Glen talking about Titian and Tintoretto again, glad he embraces digital as a tool. Really glad he’s still able to do this, it’s like watching an old Shaolin Kung fu master.

Kinda funny how every time I see someone with experience talking about how they learned from vilppu they always say the stuff he tells you to do makes sense in the end
I probably should stick to his words even if I have some doubts

>> No.5041888

>>5041879
Absolutely - especially if you’re just starting out, it’s impossible to know what you really need to follow. Obviously you can’t follow blindly, we’re all human but it might make sense later. I mentioned in another thread that the teachers I had after Glen were more interested in copying contours and I thought at the time that was important, later I came back around to Glen. And he’s still going strong! Tried and true techniques. Glen is actually more imaginative than I realized before, he pushes it and changes things to make his drawing stronger instead of worshipping the exact pose.

I used to doubt everything he taught too. Why focus on learning spherical forms, box forms, cylinder forms independently? Why light the figure from the front and render from imagination first? It doesn't make sense at first, but now I think his way is the best way to do it

Mostly poses based from a live model with certain timeframes like 5min poses

>> No.5041932

>>5041926
he drop any interesting thoughts on figure drawing? I attended the first one, I know he said not to copy the pose and to like draw a bit more from imagination and like doing the lighting from imagination sometimes etc

>> No.5041936

>>5041923
- the movement and gesture of the pose is the most important thing to study

- feel the flow of the pose first with a large smudging brush, like a chamois or watercolor brush
- don’t worry about coping the exact edges of the model, get the movement first with your grey/tone brush and then use lines to contain the forms
- it’s totally OK to push and change the pose to make the drawing stronger, especially because models can’t hold tension forever and tend to naturally relax into less dynamic poses
- try to get to a point where you can look at the movement of the pose - the gesture - and draw it from a different angle than your current POV

Question
How "specific" does the bracketing/containing forms section need to be, like how close do the ball forms need to be toward the final/reference anatomy?

>> No.5041965

>>5041959
Doesn’t need to be exact - but. It should be anatomically correct so you’re not making something foolish. So studying anatomy helps for this, to develop your eye and know what you can get away with. Or if you do decide to change it, it’s on purpose, for a reason. Like making the head smaller to make the figure seem bigger.

you have to already be at a certain level to understand what he is teaching fully. there are a few things like this, glenn... the best way I put it is the word cute, there is no verbal or written definition that would make you understand what cute is, but you know it when you see it, this is a lot like glens teaching, he is trying to verbally teach you something you can only figure out after getting to that point. its not a technical thing like perspective where you can rationalise what is being taught, its something you understand when you are ready, and I think the way he teaches it gets people ready faster.

that said, vilppu to understand what he says, and watts for a more how to do it I think is the best combo for a beginner.
