The best artists did have mastered their understanding of light and are able to realistically use it in their drawings. (like pic related)

I've learned in the basic sense by looking at anime art with two tone cell shading, and just copying where the shadows go. Eventually you pick up patterns and can kinda feel where it should go. If the light's on the left, shadows are on the right. If it's above, shadows are below. Etc. Not to say you can just place a shadow anywhere. You have to understand why something would produce a shadow due to any curves or indents on the object. I'm assuming if you want to do more realistic lighting you just is have the blend the shadows well, with airbrushes and shit. This is coming from a self taught int, so don't take this as pire fact.
