Depends on what kind of art you do.

I like to paint digitally, so If I had to use only six it would be these:
Alt: Color picker
Right click: Brush size
R: Rotate canvas
Space: Pan canvas
Shift: Straight edge
Alt + Ctrl + Z : Step backward

Others that I have bound:
Delete
Ctrl + T: Free transform
Ctrl + S: Save file (recent addition, after losing progress from crashes multiple times)
B: Brush tool

If I had more buttons I would add Ctrl + A (Select all), E (Eraser tool, sometimes I want to mess with the brush properties of the eraser quickly) and X (switch foreground and background color)

Station point is arbitrary in the sense that you can place it at whatever distance from the horizon, just make sure it's far enough so you have enough space to draw your stuff (otherwise you'll have to draw really small or your drawings will look too distorted). Then you choose the rotation of your boxes and that should tell you where to place your vanishing points and where's your DVP.

If you place your SP too far to the left/right on your canvas you'll have less space to draw without distortion (because most of your canvas will be outside of the COV) and your drawing will look a bit unnatural, as if you had cropped a photograph. If I understand correctly, whenever you take a photo the SP is always horizontally centered with respect to the photo/canvas. So, strictly speaking, in all of your drawings the SP should be horizontally centered and the horizon should divide the canvas in half (for 1 and 2 point perspective).

well yeah, that's why it's step 2, the step 1 of gesture is figuring out the main directions things are going.

that's also why people recommend things like spinning around boxes/cylinders to get a more intuitive feel so you're able to freely manipulate them.

If I am copying drawings to practice and I try to construct them with basic shapes, they never look accurate, but I do not want to copy just for the sake of copying, is this normal? I think this is happening because I am unable to understand and measure the basic underlying shape. Should I keep copying drawings this way or should I try to be more accurate copying without construction?

What would you recommend to someone that is struggling drawing the same face twice? I tried to draw faces from different angles and my character never looked the same.

What? No.

Canvas size should be based on print. Standard printing resolution is 300 dpi, from there you pick what size you want it to be in inches, or a proprtional size larger than that. It's always best to work larger than you need, because you can always shrink your art without any problem, but you can't blow it up without losing resolution.

Each piece can be a different route. I usually block in black and white in the sketch phase, and work out color between that and the final. Or i start with a neutral mid tone as the background and work from there.

Besides, a landscape or a still life is going to be a different process than a cartoon strip or fantasy/sci fi illustration.

You say "fundies aside", but does that mean you already have a grasp of the fundamentals of drawing, or does it mean you're trying to skip them?
If you don't have a strong understanding of form and perspective, then you won't be able to light a scene for shit.
If you don't know how light and shadow works, you won't be able to wrap your head around rendering.
No "photoshop tricks" will help you if you don't already have the knowledge you need.

No, I'm not talking about physically flipping the canvas and all its layers everytime, but simply flipping the view, like in Clip studio. The problem with doing that in Ps, is that it requires processing power, so files above 300+ dpi will have (relatively short) load times, and that seriously affect work flow for someone like me that loves flipping the canvas a lot, even multiple times in a row.

at 600+ dpi that shit becomes a nightmare, even on top processors, and considering there's requirements of up to 1200dpi in the industry I just don't understand why Ps doesn't have that feature yet, it's ridiculous. It doesn't matter how many dpi you're working with in csp, it's an instant flip because no layer had to be processed.

>I can understand light & shadow in theory, but have no idea how to properly apply it.
Then you don't actually understand it well enough.

>Youtube tutorials only have example of pure white objects
Because that's the simplest way to communicate the concept. If you can't get a firm grasp on that, you shouldn't move on.

>how do you guys deal with local color?
The same way, but with hue and saturation modified as well based on the material and the lighting conditions.

>Do you work generally from light tones to dark, or go straight to the darkest?
This is highly dependent on medium.
The most popular method for digital painting, for instance is starting with the midtones and adding shadow and highlight on top.
For watercolor you are more or less forced to plot out the highlights first. Graphite drawings can be similar, but you can also erase midtones to get highlights.

>Also how do you decide how dark an area is on the value scale? Is this something comes with experiences?
You need more knowledge and experience, yes. Specifically you need to work on your ability to identify a given color and accurately assess what the attributes of that color are. I would highly recommend using digital as a learning tool for this, since you can get precise information about a given color.

Every thread/post on /ic/ is saying how we should be drawing circles to form heads, gestures, etc. but when I watch professional illustrators and artist tutorials on YouTube, there’s not a Loomis/Vilppu/Huston circle to be seen. It all seems free handed for the most part. Is this a matter of having done billions of Loomis circles in the past, to the point of no longer needing those training wheels to get the correct proportions? Eventually you can just start with the jaw and the rest falls in place once you’ve internalized the fundamentals?

/ic, for the most part, is amatures and beginners fumbling their way through art education with no map, in an unlit room, why would you cater to what this forum says, over what professional artists do? That's not intended as an insult, it's just fact - few posters here are professional artists. Few are published. The vast majority of posters here are people mired in "fundies" because they don't know how to level past them and move on. Entirely too much attention and focus is paid to beginning steps that in a formal art educational setting are left behind fairly quickly - 4th year studio discipline art students aren't doing "fundies", they're working on and completing finished works - but all too often I see people posting about still "grinding' fundamental first steps for years.

Moving on, not every drawing needs to be constructed. A lot of landscape artists simply establish some landmarks, and start building the scene and tweak as they go.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ_CSj8kaHw

Other artists will use construction techniques in their exploratory sketches and studies, before starting a final painting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce7leNdACKk

Construction is a tool. Sometimes it's usefull, sometimes you don't need it. But there's a large group of beginners here, who think everything you draw has to conform to some made up 'rules" they made up in their minds (autists like structure). They're so rigid in their thinking they can't get past "perfection" and get into expressive drawing. They treat art like mechanical drawing.

>Is this a matter of having done billions of Loomis circles in the past, to the point of no longer needing those training wheels to get the correct proportions?

Yes. When you become so familiar with the process and forms, you can just establish some landmarks and go from there. It's 'training wheels' in a sense - but it's also a tool, in a big toolbox, that you don't use that much later on, but it's there if you need it.

By working with color. Start with the basics - blue sky, red ball, etc. Move up into lighting, and how it impacts color. Learn to render something in color using value and hue. Then work on integrating color into depth, and volume. Then move into using color for narrative, and emotion, and working on an overall color composition, for color and unity.

Baby steps, bigs steps, running. It's no different than anything else in art.

Get Gurney's book on color. That's an excellent place to start.

My first oil painting class started us off this way:

Take a canvas panel or primed page. Divide it into quarters. Get a brown sandwich bag, crumple it up, place on table. Sketch 4 times. Then paint it, 4 different ways:

Black and white
One color and white.
Two complementary colors, like green/red
Real colors

The point was to introduce us to color, hue, value, and thinking in different terms than what it actually looks like. The hardest part for most of us was translating the values and hues into two colors, but it was a good way to force us to see color differently. There was no right/wrong to the exercise, and accuracy wasn't a goal either, it was diving in and focusing on color. The object didn't matter, it can be anything, he told us he chose a brown paper bag because they're common, simple, and cheap, and one solid color.

Just use color. It's that simple. It's how you learn - every art student ever plows through piles of paper and ink and paint and whatever learning how, by simply trying. It's painting a red ball, and saying okay, it's a flat red circle, how do I give this volume, texture and lighting so it looks like a real red ball? And not getting mired in "omgthishastobeperfectthefirstimeanxietyimafraidtotry" nonsense that fills /ic.

Just try it. So how far you can get with simple objects. When you get stuck, ask more questions.

I start with the mid-tones. That way, I can work towards the lights and darks, and they're not set in stone, where I can't adjust.

Local color is local color. You have to think it out, if you're not using reference, or mental libraries of lighting.

Basic shading is simple: Object, light source. Plot how the light interacts with the object, and where the cast shadows would be. Almost every basic class I've witnessed starts out with simple cubes and one light source. Start there.

Deciding the darkest values is an artistic choice, that come with experience, yes. That will come with time and experience. You're putting the cart before the horse if you're still dealing with the beginning steps.

What is the best site/resource/video/etc. to get a full 360 degree view of a young (or older) woman's head? I know I can use movies, news, porn, and youtubers/streamers to get different angles, but what are some other ways (again resources or just different professions I might be forgetting that offer a lot of views of a person) outside of life drawing? I'm most interested in getting a lot of angles of a single person so I can consistently draw them. I'm even willing to pay models for a video or pictures if you guys know where I can do that.

Pictures are fine too but I feel like video is better since you can get thousands of angles from one source versus tons of pictures

It's not even about perfect lines. When I'm doing a sketch of a face for instance, I'll just roughly draw in the position of the eyes and everything looks good, but when I flip the image, the eyes aren't even, one is noticeably higher on the horizontal plane. This fucks with me pretty hard because it makes me think none of the lines/shapes I draw look how I actually think they do. If the anatomy reconciles with the actual visual intention, which here is to show a slim and soft female body you'd love to run your fingers over with prominently shown supple breasts and and a puffy pussy, yes it would.

Going in and defining taut tendons or making a lot of overlapping folds of fat and muscle like in some Vilppu bodies would destroy that impression.
Going in to show more anatomical forms of the feet, which look like toeless blobs of flesh, especially thanks to how the shoes wrap around them and how the breasts would be pulled by the muscles and tendons, that may or may not show up as a surface form softened by fat and skin, that pull up when you raise your arms up would improve the picture since they align with and empower the visual presentation.
