Uh well, from what I see from my standpoint is that I require much less time to sketch the base forms for the face. Like, it took me tons of time earlier. Strokes became lighter and more... fluid? I do much less mistakes and sloppy strokes than earlier, I may even call my strokes somewhat precise (if we compare it to what was in the very beginning).

Moreover... A notable thing is that I don't have to redraw dozens of misshapen circles and basic forms for ears/cheeks/eyes etc to get a somewhat "normal" looking face, right now I'm doing it almost from the first try, chickenscratching rarely, though. Oh, and yes. When I do the markdown for the middle lane, eyes and ear lines I'm able to see the shape of the ball, its tilt and so on right away - earlier it took me like 5 or more minutes to perceive its form. Not sure that the last sentence makes sense, but well, that's how I'm able to explain it.
And last, but not least - I finally get the knack of sharpening my pencils properly with the Opinel.

Im assuming you drew this from imagination then. That being said, symbol drawing happens when you draw what you think something looks like rather than what form it actually has. For example drawing a three fourths portait and drawing the lips as if they were front facing.
The hair in particular seems odd to be rendered without actual strands or hair being added.

You're using black and white for shading, which isn't good for skin tone. Shadows have colors too. The overall placement is sloppy too, especially on the values on the armpit, cheek, and right collarbone. But for a first attempt it's a good start, great job on completing it.

I'd recommend ctrl-paint and starting with rendering portraits and busts in grayscale. There's a few books to help you out, one by Bargue I think.

I'm trying to use the selection tool to fill sections, but the selector tool doesn't want to entirely select what I'm trying to. When it DOES work, the fill tool won't fill the entire thing and leave blank marks around lines.

The colorize mask tool just tells me to go fuck myself and fill the entire canvas when my lines have no visible leak.
