what are the ethics of an artist who copies the way another artist draws?
is artstyle theft real?

>> No.4692197

If someone copies you and does it better then you suck at your own thing, cope and improve

never understood the babies that complained about art style theft

No. We all learn by imitating other styles and there’s only so many ways you can draw or paint a thing. There is bound to be overlap. Just be the best you can be and stop feeling threatened/jealous by other talent.

>> No.4692627

Artists have been copying each other's styles for thousands of years. That's why you see a progression of artistic styles through time.

>> No.4692638

I've copied other artists for years, so when people copy me I see it as continuing the cycle

With the sheer numbers of artists out there, styles of any two artists are going to inevitably look similar.

No.
If it was, then most moeblob anime or specific era capeshit would widely be considered stealing.
Unless you're tracing, you'll be fine. All artists build their work on those that came before them.
"Art style theft" tends to be something that deviantart retards screech about, while the industry doesn't give a shit. (Also, notice how it's wrong to copy an another small artist, but building your entire style around imitating Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon is considered acceptable.)

Wanted to add to this: Finding an original, recognizable style will still benefit you. But chances of you coming up with something completely new, and not just relatively rarer, are minuscule.

Aping a style isn't unethical it can be seen as lazy and make you seem un-creative by sticking to someone else's style.
Copying another person's work is another story.
