Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Obscure question
A few months ago I saw an (art)book on traditional japanese / chinese dresses / fashion manga styles, but I can't find it anymore

I've been trying both exercises. The tips yesterday allowed me to capture the essence of a pose more easily. Still struggling with the grid exercises since I'm not accurate which in turn also affects my thumbnails (I either go too big from the get go or fail to fit everything within the square). The good thing is I'm having fun and feel like I'm improving my eye little by little with each attempt. Thanks again if you're reading this, I would also like to ask how to properly define the big angles of a piece at the start before beginning, since the pigtail girl was the only one with clearly defined angles.

I might not be the most qualified artist but since thread is very much silent I can offer some insights about contraposto, don't mind the terrible line quality, I'm trying to use pens more often to improve line confidence. The shoulder line and the waist line point different directions (not parallel) this makes one of the sides of the body compress and the other extend, the weight bearing leg should be on the compressed side otherwise the pose will be unnatural, regarding arms the most important part is that the elbow joint should be able to trace an arch from point where the ribs end, got that one from the Araki book, never be afraid to use as much references as possible.

For people using clip studio, you can use the built-in grid and adjust grid settings to make them more fine/smaller. also snap brushes to the grid. i was using this for my kanji practice but also drawing
https://youtu.be/f_kkvWbl9f8?t=120

a quick study i do sometimes for warmup is block out the shape, try to draw it, then turn the grid on to check what parts i got wrong at the end. you can start noticing patterns in places you over or underexaggerate. i don't focus on meticulous copy, just roughly getting in shapes, mileage, and playing with lines. low risk fun and adjusting back into digital.

I use CSP as well. I was struggling for this with for some time as using grid to perfectly subdivide whatever I throw at it proved to be quite inconvinient and drawing the lines even with snap to ruler added extra hassle for smaller subdivisions. What I ended up doing for grids is.
>File > Preferences > Layer/Frame > Set frame border gutters to 0 px. You only need to do this once
>Grab whatever picture you want
>Make new Frame Border Folder layer
>Layer > Ruler Frame > Divide Frame Border Equally
>Now you can set any sort of vertical and horizontal divisions that will match perfectly whatever picture you want. Set divide folder to do not change
>Turn this grid into a raster layer. duplicate. extend the canvas
Turned most of these steps into an auto action. Apparently there used to be a tool for doing this directly in rulers but its gone in newer versions.

No rules. Just tools. Turns out most artists depending on their dominant hand have a much easier way doing lines in a specific direction. Everyone rotates the paper or canvas, its perfectly normal

>> No.4587931

>>4587889
I remember something like that but I don't need it enough. If I need lines I add a horizontal and vertical ruler and draw them myself. I really wish there was an option for holding shift and having it do vertical/horizontal like in Photoshop. I never use the shift functionality that CSP has for connecting two points. My next thing to learn is probably the 3D figure viewer or go back to my previous life of 3D and use blender instead.

>>4587909
You're supposed to turn the paper to make it easiest to do the lines you can. Everyone has a natural geometry that makes it easiest to do the straightest lines or ellipses. Usually it's like 30-45 degrees and it's easier to draw away from you versus towards your body.

The point of a study isn't to create an exact copy, it's to gain an understanding of how that artist works and to learn something. Doesn't matter if the end result looks good or not as long as you accomplished that.

If you really want to learn how to draw like a specific artist, do lots of quick studies of their work and compare your versions to the pieces you're trying to study and think about what you can do differently next time to get a closer match. Then experiment with different approaches until you get something more accurate.

I'd lose the lines under the eyes indicating bags. The shading you've already got should indicate bags well enough, the lines just make her look old. Less can be more sometimes.
Also you should work on drawing necks/collarbones, in particular making them look more three dimensional - that way you can have the strand of hair falling over her body more naturally. Look at how artists you like deal with the neck area.

you have a bigger issue, which is the size and shape of the cranium, and the front of the face in relation, for example look at the space from the eyebrows to the top of the head on your copy, and the same space on the original, and additionally the gap between the edge of the face and the left eye
you need to do loomis like the other guy said, or huston. i recommend huston, there are videos in the video course thread where he shows how to construct the head using basic shapes

I actually did (try to) use loomis, which is how I've ended up with the elongated face (I used 3rds for the eyebrows / nose / lip / chin) instead of the more cutesy and more compressed face of the original

Whenever I use loomis to copy existing art I usually get the proportions wrong during initial construction which then also fucks up the refinement phase

The gap at the eye I had already (kind of) fixed
I'll try working on paper though and see if that helps

Wow, simple shading is actually really easy if you just copy people and understand what they're doing. I wasn't expecting it to be so easy. The only hard part is getting the colour the way that you want (if it's not B&W). Too bad I can't really draw anything fully at the moment, but this will make face details and bodyparts look nicer.

From my experience it seems like every artist has different ways of doing things.
"fundies" are important, but the way that people learn and practice them is so different that you can't really rely on other people to figure it out for you.
Just find what works for you and run with it.
There are plenty of artists who have no clue about perspective whatsoever, they just learned perspective through copying so many other artists that it became second nature to them without knowing all the rules.
Does that mean that knowing the rules is wrong? No, it's just a different approach to the same concept.

That's the biggest struggle. Unfortunately most of the people here on /ic/ didn't follow the basic advice of doing ctrl paint for digital. Anyone can renderfag but drawing (painting and linear drawing) is what takes years to master. It takes years of studies and experimenting, having eureka moments along the way. There's only guidance people can give, the rest you have to figure out for yourself.

The biggest trap noobs seem to fall into is trying to go straight to anime rendering which has a ton of filters and post processing after the fact before they even understand hard and soft round brushes. They don't understand why the artists do the things they do, they just copy. Starting with the basic Western methods like tiling and still life really trains your eye to see color and temperature shifts. You need to practice anime rendering but don't neglect the other styles and color theory because they all feed into your improvement.

I did. Discovered that my tooling plays against me at every turn and just went back to drawing because I'm making progress there, I can use paper and pencils which is pretty straightforward and there is still several things for me to improve. For some reason rendering its extremely hard for me, specially on digital, I must be king of the brainlets.

The key for true soul comes from drawing whatever your heart wishes, and it has 2 spectrums. On one side of the spectrum, kids (or terminal autists) just draw whatever the hell they want without caring about what the result might be, so the drawings are imparted with soul. On the other side you have artists that are versed in their craft well enough that the few conscious decisions they have to make is what they want to draw while all the rest is second nature. Everything inbetween is the valley of the soulless, where you find yourself unable to bring justice to your own vision and all your mental effort is spent trying to either overcome technical challenges or hiding mistakes which in turn removes the soul from the piece. The only thing left for us my friend is to traverse this dark valley, constantly seeking to refine our craft so we might be able to properly bring the soul of our inner worlds for the world to behold.

screen tablets: avoid the cheap chinese brands like XP-Pen, get a used/refurbished Wacom (cintiq 16). If you want a 22 inch screen then Huion is your safest choice.
