IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES ~ try ~1000px, <1.1mb:

1.-Screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-Change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-Send to computer and resize in MSPaint

4.-Go to picresize.com

? ?

IF YOU ARE NEW OR NEED GUIDANCE READING THE STICKY IS A MUST:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

To any one who feels like they're not understanding what people mean by feeling "flow" (because admittedly it does sound esoteric), try to just spend 30 min doing 1 minute gesture drawings on as many sheets as you need. You don't have to make them detailed. What you should focus on is just the line of action. You can sometimes think of this as the spine, but this isn't always the case. You might've heard this before, but this is extremely important to help your drawings feel less stiff. During the gesture stage you don't have to really make the anatomy accurate, just make sure the proportions feel right. You could do this as a warm up. This isn't the only way to practice, but it can help you figure out what kinds of poses you have trouble with and why. Learning the anatomy goes hand in hand with this too, but this is a good place to start if you have no idea how to do anatomy.

I eouldnt say that's what I'm doing but OK. Basically you're going to draw this face two more times. Take an entire hour to do the next one. Start by measuring everything before you draw it. Pay attention to the boring spaces (forehead, back of head, distance from ear to the rest of whatever. Basically don't an eye, ear, nose, etc, draw what's actually there.

Then after you've spent a literal hour drawing this one you're gonna draw a 4th one in 10 minutes keeping in mind everything from the 1 hour version. See you soon! And god bless

Artists are good at drawing. They're very rarely good at much else. Such as explaining. When you draw 10,000 models in 10,000 poses, you train your brain like a neural network AI. Sorry, I wasn't trying to bulli you. I know how hard it is, I'm a /beg/ too. I just think it's more beneficial to you and actually more comforting overall to understand just how far your drawing was from the ref, and that the way to fix your drawings is to slowly improve your skills and decrease that gap. That way you won't fall into a trap like "oh, someone on /ic/ told me that if I just used construction or if I just thought in 3D then I would do better, I'm trying to do that so why aren't I doing better". It's a long process with many many steps, you can't just fix "that one thing" you were missing and suddenly it's great.

Very true for me as /beg/, I have undeveloped skills in 100 different areas. I know when I draw I do a million things wrong. I pick one thing I want to focus on per sketch. Torso studies, i'm trying to draw them in different angles to get used thinking in 3d.

>> No.4573467

I think I'm wasting my time. I have all day to draw but I feel like I accomplish nothing. Dont get me wrong, I draw for hours on end but I dont know what to study, what to practice or what to do really.
I just do random things like copy hands, do figure drawings, do a couple of regular drawings, copy some artist.
Like I have no plan or anything.
What should I be doing? I have literally all day to draw but I dont know what to spend my time on.

What would be the best use of my time?

beginners who are overly fixated on "how to best use their time" don't make it very far into a time-investment/skill-based hobby. at the beginner stage you should be mostly preoccupied with having fun. you're in this for the long haul. despite the memes to that /ic/ is full of bad artists, /ic/'s demographic skews to the intermediate/advanced levels. at that level, studies are necessary to improve but as a beginner you should focus on making drawing a fun and enjoyable recreational activity.

Assuming you have spent 2 years of consistently "just drawing" with even the most basic intention to improve, you should be at a point where you "know what you don't know" and you can read academic material and follow along the lessons outlined for you. You should have a rough understanding of what you are missing and, knowing how to navigate /ic/ and its archives, you should roughly know where you can start looking for resources to help yourself develop in those areas. You also should by now have cultivated a series of artists you admire and would like to replicate their style. These two should compound, you should have goals and you should know what the path to those goals should look like.

I need fucking help anons.

I've put a lot of effort while in quarantine on learninig anatomy and properly constructing proportions. I'm really satisfied with everything I've learned except faces.

I've tried loomis, I've tried proko, and I'm still struggling.

Pic related were drawings from photos on sketchdaily. Any critique will be helpful, as I am well past the point of frustration.

those first two videos don't explain anything though. I don't actually understand what those are.... I read about the horizon line and eye level and vanishing points, and I know what those are but I don't understand the purpose of a measuring point or why I would need or want one and how I would go about making it....

I have a feeling it's a ways away from me learning it though so I'll just read up on Scott robertson's book in the meme time...

For the most part yes, although I would've used a whole cylinder shape for the body.

When drawing a head that's fairly realistic (not hyper) do you mash numerous photo references of different people together? I know a real woman I like to draw but there's not a lot of pictures of her online. Should I draw from imagination to fill in the blanks to draw her from different angles and with different expressions? (for instance if there's not a good image of her frowning from a certain angle, just draw what I imagine it would look like?) Or use refs of different people as a basis/guideline and alter them to look more like her?

By knowing how the form affects the drapers and how the form folds.
By knowing form and "feeling" it, you have to do alot of gesture drawing. Perspective will help you too, to understand depth.

The most important part is to raw a lot of gestures (nakes ones) so you can see how the body-parts interact together.
The most crucial parts which will show folds are body-parts which can move and rotate, e.g. like the leg.

There are tutorial too and book for folds.
If you want them to draw believable you have to keep always the movement in mind and if the figure is running , so to have the natural counterpart in your drawing too, at this point it would be the Gegenwind.

Hope this helps.

Hmm tips for reference drawing, that's pretty difficult in general without giving advice about a specific example, but I'll give it a try.

A lot of people approach drawing from reference like approaching a puzzle, starting with one area and going into full detail and then moving on to the next and so on and so forth.
It's a problem because in the end individual areas might look right, but as a whole they don't really fit together.
So try to consider the whole first, as in proportion relationship gesture and only go into detail once you're somewhat happy with that.
Of course you can run into the opposite problem too, that the drawing as a whole looks good but individual areas arn't exactly right, but it's a better mistake to make than the other way around.

Your approach should also be appropriate to the reference, the batting lady was very gestural and dynamic so it's a good idea to focus on that first. Whereas if you draw a car or a building or something your first focus should be perspective.
I know that sounds completely obvious but I see a lot of people who draw from reference purely rely on their observation without considering their approach first.

The most important thing is probably constantly measuring angles + distances.
I don't mean anally measuring to the last millimeter either, but rather getting things in the right ballpark.
Like if you imagine a vertical from the head down it roughly aligns with the foot that goes backwards.
Or if you imagine a vertical down from the hands they roughly align with the foot that comes forward.
Or getting the angle for the bat from handle to tip right.
Or imagining a diagonal from the head to the tip of the bat to judge if it's in the right place or not.
If you do that constantly it will eventually become second nature and your gut-feeling will actually become reliable

Great now I wrote too much and the Thread is about to die, so probably nobody will even read it.
