I'm 35, started learning how to draw seriously last year. I started because over the years I've always liked drawing but never took it seriously and I needed a new creative hobby. I tried painting tank models but I didn't enjoy it, and I tried photography but there's only so many times I'm willing to just go out and shoot things. Drawing is fun for me, gives me an outlet when I'm stressed, is endless (there's tons to learn, forever), exercises my creativity, and I can combine it with my writing to create comics. It ticked all the boxes.

This year I started playing the piano. Ticks the same boxes.

> do you just go and try out a bunch of stuff and see which one you like
Yes, kinda. This is something I've only started doing in the past 5 years or so because I finally ascended into a well paying job but basically:

Go through youtube, 4chan boards, reddit, etc and see what people are dedicating themselves to. Find something that fascinates you, where you can sit down and watch videos for hours on how to do the thing.

It takes about 6 months to get a good feel for the hobby, until you kinda get out of that super beginner stage where everything's too hard and really understand if it's something you want to pursue.

Don't just buy a shitload of gear and equipment when you're just trying something out or you'll end up either throwing money away or sticking with a hobby just because you sunk so much money into it. Start slow. But, if you can, try going for that upper beginner level stuff. Otherwise it'll hurt your enjoyment of the hobby and you'll end up quitting a hobby you might have enjoyed.

Immerse yourself fully in the hobby, educating yourself, and the community.

Over 5 years I've tried:
- writing
- art
- photography
- playing the piano
- speed reading
- model building/painting
- lockpicking
- getting gud at fighting games
- making jewelry

The last 4 I abandoned because I wasn't getting enjoyment out of them. Photography I still do occasionally. Writing I didn't have time for but I'll get back to that when I get to comics. Art, piano and reading I've stuck to. I dedicate about 3 hours between them every day with reading usually being the one skipped if I want to dedicate more time to the other two.

The nice part of trying new hobbies is that you learn stuff you can apply elsewhere. Like my knowledge of photography has helped my art. Jewelry stuff helped lockpicking And some hobbies simply improve your life e.g. speed reading helps me learn everything faster.

The only hobby I've ever had that I can say never positively impacted my life is gaming.

>> No.4572317

>>4572311
>Immerse yourself fully in the hobby, educating yourself, and the community.
What I mean with immersing yourself is try to read books about the hobby, join communities, discord servers, watch videos, take a course, see what other people are posting, communicate with others, post about what you're doing on social media. The more you immerse yourself the quicker you can get a feel for the hobby and the more excited about it you become.

If the hobby isn't for you you'll then you'll automatically find yourself, in spite of your best efforts kinda losing momentum, losing touch with the community, not being interested in learning anymore.

But you need to jump start your interest and that's the way to do it.

>The only hobby I've ever had that I can say never positively impacted my life is gaming.

For me It's kinda the opposite, If it wasn't for VNs I wouldn't have bothered to learn japanese. Altough I regret wasting
most of my childhood playing cs for 10 hours straight Everyday.

>> No.4572332

>>4572318
Well, technically gaming didn't teach you Japanese. It just inspired you to learn it. In that way, yes, gaming can influence you. Kinda how Cities Skylines has inspired me to learn more about how road design works in cities. But that's not really gaming teaching you something or impacting your life meaninfully. It's more that it's just another avenue to find things that might interest you.

28, drawing since I was 15-16... Never had that mentality of making it, so I was always drawing onlyfor myself with no regard of it being pleasing or marketable...

Maybe since 2018 I started to more actively pursue art, at least to just pocket in some money. Due to personal circumstances I can only pursue art semi-professionally at best, hobyist in reality.

I also have a really low output, maybe 6-8 finished pieces a year, and I dont sletch of really study, so you can see, but this quarantine has helped me draw and paint so much, maybe, in 2 weeks I already surpassed my last years output

nah i am "just draw" kind of person, i do gesture warmup every day and occasional figure drawings, and the only book i followed was Robertson's "How to Draw" (but even that lasted only for a week)
i tend to spend a lot of time on every drawing, correcting and fixing and redrawing, looking up how other artist did things i am struggling with and so on; for this picture i spent half a week doing thumbnails and rough sketches with different variations and camera angles and then week on picture itself, pretty much everything except for body itself was redrawn 2-4 times
i know it's not very efficient and doesn't look like good for time i spend on it and still has hilarious mistakes like >>4578972 pointed out but that's the only method of improvement that works for me

Turning 33 next month, starting drawing seriously when I was 30.

Actually, I started drawing seriously back when I was 21 but it only lasted about a year. I found /ic/ discovered/grinded loomis, perspective, etc.. I tried hard for a year, then gave up.

Glad I didn't this time, and I wonder how good I would have been if I had been practicing my observational and drawing mechanics since then. Kind of crazy how I just didn't draw at all for so long. It's a good discipline to get into.
