IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

So I'm kind of a noob, but I had a question relating to supplies, and the trajectory of doing drawing as a hobby. My goal is to do only portraits/headshots varying from fairly realistic (not hyper) to pretty stylized, at varying angles. Learning the head very well. I plan on using photo references from online and eventually getting good enough to where I can draw from imagination. I don't even care about becoming a great artist, just a decent one. Are basic supplies (using only 2B pencils/printer paper/pink erasers) enough to achieve this goal? Also I don't plan on reading books or taking classes (no drawing from live models). Can I get there with this simple caveman routine?

it sounds like we are fairly similar. i also draw as a hobby and have a liking to drawing head portraits alot (although i like everything else as well).

i have also been using only basic supplies (hb pencil and plain sketchbook paper) and can tell you it definitely works and its a very achievable goal. although i will add that using a kneaded eraser instead of a normal one will boost your results by a lot.

no classes is fine too, i was in a life drawing class for school but i only went to it 3 times total so i think that barely counts and overall i dont think classes are important at all.

im /beg/ and i say not bad but the few mistakes that stands out to me are:

the legs are too short. notice how in the reference the length between the bottom of the feet up to the crotch area is about half of the overall model. in your drawing that length would reach only to the neck area.

the gesture is abit off. in the reference the arm on the right is almost completely vertical but in your drawing its curving / leaning forward making the model feel like shes more hunched over

other areas that arent lining up: see how in the reference the elbow on the left is slightly above the hanging ribcage? in the drawing its far below. due to perspective the feet on the left is actually slightly below the feet on the right and in the drawing its far above, making it feel floaty.

also try to include the head and the hands

I saw about this on uldanis anatomy for sculptors but mainly, if your silhouette is boring, then you kill the read about something, for example take bottom, if you do a fill you'll see is mostly a ball or blob, very boring overall and could be many things, you usually want to give a clear sense of someones defining attributes, mix it up, create a rhythm or intent with a pose. So poses like that crumpled, you need to get things out somehow, feet, hands, to still get a human read.
Approach, I used to begin always with blocks, then learned gesture and introduced that to my workflow, nowadays I just wing it so just try different stuff, see what you like of them, how they help you. I also went through a phase of drawing grids and planes to place characters/angles of view better and I think I have to bring that back to what I do. So yeah, try it all.

Look at the position of the pelvis on the model vs your drawing as well as the angle of the shoulders and their position relative to each other. These measurements are important since they dictate the centre mass of the body. As you can see, the centre line of your drawing is tilted forward instead of back due to these wrong positions. Hope this helps.

practice won't help you right now your anatomy isn't that good to start doing practices, learn anatomy how you go about it is another matter. if you start doing practices you wont progress that much since your anatomy is beg and all you will be doing is reinforcing those errors if you don't spot them and fix it later.

now your anatomy is not that bad in some parts like the hand and forearm(right arm), but the left arm coming from his thigh and that awful clothing makes me wonder if you are eyeballing a lot or using refs.

so i don't know how hard you should go on anatomy but your 3D spatial sense needs some practice, those can be done with forms, boxes are too easy so try parts of the body simplified in forms from different angles.

If you work on paper instead of digital, try buying a sketchbook, whatever size, around 100 pages. Set yourself a goal to fill it within a time period you deem reasonable, write down that date on the cover, and don't draw in it past that date.
For my new years resolution, I told myself I would fill a 100 page sketchbook by the end of the semester. I knew I needed to draw at least a couple pages every 2 days. You can fill it with whatever you want, but at least put a minimum amount of effort into them. This goal got me to do more pages in 3 months than I did in the previous 6

>How the fuck do I stay motivated to ____ consistently?

This exact question is asked in every hobbyist forum countless times. Every weightlifting forum has this question asked by beginner weightlifters. Every programming forum has this question asked by programmer novices. Every STEM academic forum has this question asked by struggling students.

This question has been asked 100,000 times, and answered 100,000 times. And I have no doubt it will be asked 100,000 times more. The answer is mainly two-fold.
One, motivation is fleeting. You can only call upon motivation when you happen to feel motivated, which will not be always. Discipline however can be called upon any time. You make yourself do whatever, even though your brain isn't producing a flood of endorphins like it is when you are motivated. Teaching yourself Discipline is tricky because humans, like all organisms and phenomena, prefer the path of least resistance. But unlike animals, unlike electricity, you can override your instinct to be lazy.

This leads to Two, no one can teach you how to discipline yourself. They can only tell you what worked for them. There is no one size fits all method to learning how to be disciplined. You just have to experiment and find ways to motivate yourself to keep going.

You're better off using pencil and paper for that if you're not familiar with digital brushes. And you can trace it as the book says, constructing the face correctly isn't the focus here, focus ONLY on tones/shade and how hard or soft their edges are and how dark and light, this exercise is only to train to accurately see value and control it here.

Don't draw hair, just block in a big area with black and pay attention at it's edges transitioning to lighter areas.

I know right. We're at the absolute worst fucking point.
Support and encouragement is minimal because we're dogshit, we're slow at everything because we lack techniques and shortcuts, and motivation wavers because of low confidence.

I am trying to draw again this year. The firsts months i barely drew anything, i used to sit and stare at the paper, scribble a little, get anxious and give up. Now i am finally able to just willingly sit and enjoy drawing. This is what helped me:

-don't look at other artists before drawing: i only look at other artists to see how they solved a certain problem.
-put white noise in the background (anything but music): it will help you concentrate in drawing.
-draw what you like: draw for yourself.
-don't use social media to post your art: same as above.
-set up small goals: my goals this year is making clean sketches and be able to paint decently with pencils.
-don't use references (personal): i only look at references when i need to solve a difficult problem, mostly shoes and hands.

I can't really give you many advices because you are waaaay better in skill than me, but i hope it helps you. Think of drawing as a relaxing hobby, not as something you need to get better now.

try these basic ideas

1) before you start, turn your background into something darker than pure white, it doesn't matter what color grey is fine too like 20-30% grey is already fine. Remember "Colors can only exist in relation to each other" so having a pure white background "blinds your eyes" and makes every other color look dark in comparison to the entire picture making it difficult to see the different colors and difficult for you to pick colors that go well witch each other. As a result even your darkest areas (save for the lineart) will be very bright washed out color.

2) Put down the base colors with similar values before you start shading. You can even make a palette if you like just keep it simple when you are learning.

3) Check you picture in greyscale, use your software to convert it from color to greyscale and check the values and then back. This will help your eyes to learn seeing value better.

just for precision, 18% grey is close to “50% grey” (128,128,128) in gamma-corrected color spaces (eg sRGB). but you should be working in a linear color space anyway

I am an ultra mega giga shitter so I have no right to talk about anything. But in my humble opinion the biggest mistake I see /beg/s above me make is they learn how to sketch to an acceptable level, but instead of learning proportion, foreshortening, anatomy, they immediately dive head first into the deep end of art. They want to show coloring, color theory, shading, rendering, they want to learn cloth physics and all these niche or advanced aspects of art, meanwhile they still draw t-rex arms and wonky looking asses. I say this with no malice, I just think these people could improve a lot more consistently if they took it one step at a time and really honed their sketching process and refrained from jumping in the deep end of the pool.

I'm still at the grinding Loomis phase, but there's a drawing I really want to do. Problem is, it's a fantasy race with a weird nose (shorter than the 1/3rd rule and more rectangular), should I turn this into a 'study' or just keep grinding normal humans?

I think there's probably something to this. I had seen so many artists get in a rut in their comfort zone that I decided that I had to always be challenging myself with the hardest stuff I could think of. If I couldn't draw the craziest meme poses from imagination then I was a failure. But actually if you just start with the easy stuff, then you'll learn more and also improve your confidence because you see more success. You don't have to worry about getting stuck in your comfort zone if you don't even have a comfort zone yet.
t. Probably not much better than you.

The point of loomis, and every other artbook, is that you slowly and gradually incorporate their lessons into your own drawing process. If you think its good practice then you can turn it into a study. Anything is good as long as you're applying what you've learned

Thanks. I'm finding it hard to draw anything that's not in his books so I need to snap out of that ASAP. I figured the best thing to do would be to apply his lessons to a unique drawing, but the thing I want to draw most right now is that fantasy race with the dumb noses.

I'm all in favor for people drawing what they want. Its your art. If you want to draw a wonky anatomy anime girl, sketch it, line art it, color, shade, render it. Ok. You can do that. But if you come to the /beg/ general and ask for advice, I'm going to explain why I think you spending hours and hours coloring something that has bad anatomy that was messed up during the sketch process, is not an efficient way to learn.

Additionally, it shouldn't take someone 2+ years of sketching to reach a point where they have a workable grasp of figure drawing.

I basically just drew the ribcage and pelvis first, then drew cylinders to indicate the arms and legs position, thickness and length. Then I drew the muscles on top of everything.
