IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it.

Consider doing the following references for your personal studies/exercises if you don't know what to draw.
/beg/ is not a competition if you are interested in doing so there's a variety of other threads for that.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

Lol you've made a layer error.
This is how your layers should be formatted:
LINEART (Lock this layer so it cannot be altered)
FILL (Turn off transparent pixels once you've filled it with flat colors within the lines, then you can work on this layer to paint)
BACKGROUND (self explanatory)
You locked transparent pixels on your lineart layer, not your flats layer. The flats layer must be separate to your background as well.

The way to do it is if your lineart Is fully connected then you can make a magic selection outside the body and then Invert Selection to color inside it, or you can fill it with a full-opacity brush manually and then lock TP

Feng zhu is fast at making lineart but it's still overall quite slow, especially in terms of how long it takes to clean up. A comic relies on a sense of movement, and Feng Zhu does a lot but his talents do not lie in expression, gesture, or dynamicism. These things are not only accomplished with practice, but also immediacy. Obviously we must approach our art with care and attention, but at the same time a drawing of someone running is not enhanced by multiple passes over its lines to make them perfect and nibbly. Take this illustration by Ashley Wood as an example of 'first stroke' techniques being applied to lend movement to a picture

Exactly, I'm talking about a screenless tablet too (w/o display), I've got a unopened PTK-840 that's probably been forgotten at a corner of some warehouse last year for cheap. I'm talking about the potential for improvement when it comes to that kind of hand eye coordination.

As for the potential for improvement, I feel the learning you get from getting better at screenless is not necessarily the same as learning how to make good lineart, it's just getting better at using a screenless tablet. If anything, the goal is to be good at visible lineart and have your screenless work catch up to your traditional skill.

>> No.4567055

>>4567037
so you mean like concept artists cannot really make the lineart that crispy because there is much more details to be fleshed out right? it does make sense, comic characters and scenes have to be reproductible fairly efficiently going from frame to frame so I guess they'd be simpler, and yeah details and movement probably don't go together well

You can see Kim Jung Gi as a sort of intermediate between dynamic and detailed art, because he usually works straight pen-to-paper, but sometimes his work is called soulless

kim jung gi is an awesome artist, but watching him work is the least didactical experience I've ever had. people call him a human printer for a reason. watching him draw is like watching a computer render an image, he simply knows where each line should go and that's it. even when he's trying to teach he just talks about the real stuff he's drawing ("this part of the gun does that and that"), he seems like a 100% intuitive artist

I do recommend doing solely pen, I don't believe Kim's work is soulless because of the process I believe it's soulless because he has no soul.

I drew an apple. Nice.

After a year of drawing line stuff, I tried doing some actual painting because I finally found a good explanation of how the oil brush works in CSP and because I want to break away from simple cel shading.

I'm not trying to be a painter, but I do appreciate that learning how to do this, at least to a mediocre degree, can translate into other areas.

So my question is how do I move forward? Where do I go next? I'm thinking of doing a bunch of studies, to properly understand the brushes, values, colors and how they work with form... how should I study if doing digital paintings isn't really my end goal (comics)? How do I do this?

For example, there's various levels of studying perspective, and there's no use studying the mathematics of it if all you want to do is draw coom art.

General anatomy and construction. I'll skip that because it's all over the place (eyes too large, nose too wide, face too short) and you can check for yourself by just layering your drawing on top of the reference and lowering the opacity.

More importantly you're symbol drawing, or you're missing out on the details. Examples of this that I can see:

- The eyes: Eyes aren't shaped the way children draw them. You're missing out on the whole structure of the eyes. They're not going around the face. The eye lids are not in the right place, and the lower eye lid fold is missing. There's no depth to them. Additionally, you messed up the eye lashes. You drew what you thought eyelashes look like. Try tracing the reference really accurately to see where you're going wrong.

- The eyebrows: You drew lines. That's not what the eyebrows look like on the ref. There's thickness, variation, single hairs.

- The nose: Other than being too thick, you flattened the entire nose with your shading, especially by missing out on the spherical shading of the tip of the nose. You're also missing the structure of the underside of the nose, how it connects to the lips, etc.

- If you're going to render shadows, you need to render the shadows that you see until you learn the forms.

Learn how to construct the parts of the face so that you can learn what to look for when drawing, even if you're just copying.

I pretty much copied this, L-let's call it reference. That's how I see the wheels, I can't really adjust them to look good.
Then I ditched this bike model and referenced Hermes from Kino no Tabi, but I like this bulky bike better

How do you draw lips without making it look like shit symbol drawing?

>> No.4567888

How do I effectively copy art? I don't want to literally trace pictures so I'm just trying to redraw them by sight and somehow, even when I'm trying to copy the most basic animu girl face possible with like 99% white space the face turns out like some chromosome lacking male face that vaguely resembles a block. Do I just need to repeat this shit ad nauseum or is there some trick to it?

>> No.4567891

>>4567874
Another beg here, forget about it for the time being. As far as I see, we're still learning to do lineart. Features of the face can't be easily represented by lines, they're instead done by values (shadows and light).
It's nigh impossible to detail the lips with lines without it looking ugly, we'd need to get into rendering territory to do Pic related

But just a small "second mouth" like is fine, if you put it where it really goes it indicates that there are lips there.

>> No.4567901

>>4567888
/beg/ here. I'd say you need to have some understanding of construction before attempting to copy art, otherwise you're just copying the surface and nothing relevant Wil stick with you at that level.
Look for some construction videos or tutorials a bit, and then try to copy anime BUT drawing the underlying structure. The eyes have a certain distance for example that the artist maped out in their mind. The forehead has a certain shape as well, the jaw is very hard to get right and there's the cheekbones as well. All of that is a ton of construction that's flying past you if you try to copy the end result with blank spaces. You do the construction right and then erase those lines to get the right blank spaces.

No it just lacks form, you’re not using line weight to indicate the form of the body. Also the scapula looks very generic, good animu anatomy is still based in real human anatomy.

you’re taking the “eyes should be one eye space apart” a bit too literally. there are people that do look like that but it’s not ideal if you’re just trying to map out and study a normal face. the eyes should be slightly closer together and smaller.

Drawing is like anything in life. You just have to force yourself to keep doing it even though you'll embarrass yourself and look like an idiot and you'll toil for hours and hours on end while watching tons of other people blow right past you effortlessly. It's just how life works. Make your own assessment if you think it's worth the time investment. But you can't let the crabs make the decision for you.
