IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

When analyzing how good someone is at drawing, shouldn't we be taking into account how long it took to make the drawing? and how they did it? If you put enough hours into a drawing I think almost anyone can come up with something that looks good, by using perspective grids very carefully etc.

Whereas if someone else can do the same drawing in minutes without even sketching, obviously that guy is much better.

There's also the fact of how much they relied on a reference, that one only they will honestly know. There's many ways to use a reference. There's copying sure, and there's also "almost copying", which wouldn't speak too well of their skill.
Then there's also making a frankenstein out of many references by copying parts of them, and the end result would look good but I'm not sure about their skill

So when attempting to draw something, I get overwhelmed by all the details, should I give-myself lesioursly long enough time as I am completely starting art and work in stages?

What I want to draw is too complex(people portraits) and I won't get satisfaction until I've got all the details I think is whole, so I guess my skill(complete starter) is way below my standard

Any approach towards this so it's not self-defeating when I fail, but also helps me build it up to my satisfaction? I do enjoy it but it's so intimidating

Nope, if it looks good it has skill. Someone who sucks is gonna churn out a shit drawing no matter how much time, or references or how they use the references you give. The final product defines the skill level. If someone is faster than someone else, that is a completely different subject as you can't see speed in the final product itself. This too. Reference is another resource that you can use, but it limits you just like having to spend a ton of time in your drawing limits you. If you can produce the same quality work fast and without reference, your skills are higher.

That's why when someone simply posts a drawing here I don't think it says much about their current level as artists, unless they explain how long it took them and whether they used reference or not.

I remembered this and I'm not sure about anything anymore. It looks fantastic despite being from a reference because the artist himself is good.
No matter how much time they spent and how much they look at this little girl, a /beg/ won't produce something this good otherwise they wouldn't be /begs/.

yes but at the same time if someone produced a perfect drawing but used references and took a long time, there really isnt much to critique other than "try to do it faster" and "try to be less reliant on references" so in the end for the purposes of knowing what needs to be improved upon its likely that the artist already knows anyway

I love this implication that a beg has imagination over someone who knows what they are doing. If you can't realize your imagined ideas into anything good, you didn't have an imagination to begin with. The other funny thing is about your quote, that is kind of what people who are serious about getting better do in the first place, they set their imagination a side in order to learn the fundamentals then come back to it once they have gotten better and can realize their ideas.

Neither would time spent, that's just speed.

>This brings us to an extremely important rule: at least half of the time you spend drawing must be devoted to drawing purely for its own sake. Not to learn, not to improve, not to develop your skills, not even to apply what you've already learned. There are no restrictions on medium, no specific techniques you must use, no subject matter you must focus on. Draw the things you'd draw if you were the most skilled artist in the world; draw the things your brain insists you're not ready to tackle just yet.

Line weight with pen, good job
Her facial proportions looks correct I don't think anything looks off
Cons
Picking what's important, I feel u didn't make good choices picking what's important (drawing all of the lips)
That leads to my second con
Your drawing is uglier than the real life version. It is easier to make someone prettier with a drawing imo and to do that you gotta make the right choices which lines to put down

symbol drawing is a much worse problem than I initially thought, especially drawing faces. it's easy to just memorize a bunch of good ways to draw mouths, noses, eyes and hair and repeat them over and over without ever trying to think about the face/head in 3D. now that I noticed it in my own work, I realize even some good, "advanced" artists do it too.

Some construction and blocking in would really help anon. Seems like you have the common size-detail syndrome, where beginners draw the more detailed parts of the drawing too small and disproportional. Begin your drawing by establishing the total size of the drawing, as in, measure the max width and max height of the horse, and block it inside a box. After that look where the big landmarks should be placed inside this box by comparing with the ref. After you've established the positions of the primary shapes, only then you can go in and add the details.
With this method you will have an easier time properly translating the proportions accurately.

many thing that can be criticized here, but I'll just start with a simple one: try to make the hand larger. Observe your own hand, put it on your face and see how it almost covers your entire face. Hands are much bigger than you think.
I would tell you to read the sticky and start learning the fundamentals from 0, but honestly just keep drawing, keep being mindful of your anatomy, always compare with a reference photo.
And always "zoom out" and see if the bigger picture makes sense, instead of getting tunnel-visioned into the small details.
