Welcome to /INT/ - Intermediate Draw!
Please post in this thread if you're above /beg/ beginner but not yet ready for the big boy's club in the advanced draw thread.

Try to reflect upon your art and what you could improve upon. Be self-critical!

---

the Dunning-Kruger Effect:
Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, is a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.

Essentially, the Dunning Kruger effect explains why incompetent people are unable to see that they’re incompetent.

I liked that one guys idea of generals related to subject matter instead of skill. sooner or later the /int/ thread will be flooded with shitposting and complaints about skill level, it always happens. it also seems redundant because there’s not enough “advanced” art in /draw/ for there to be a need to fill the gap.

what do you guys think of /fig/, /bg/, and of course a porn containment thread? we already have /alt/ for cartoons and a regular animation thread. a still life general would be cool too.

they don’t have to be arbitrary. we could consolidate it down to maybe 3 or 4 broad threads. /fig/ for figure drawing, /bg/ for backgrounds and landscapes, and a porn thread for containment and maybe a still life drawing thread would be the most helpful for beginners. I just think if you’re trying to learn to draw landscapes you won’t find “intermediate everything” or “beginner everything” full of mostly deviantart ocs as useful. same for whatever else.

That's a great way to start out a study, good job with those.
I would recommend pushing the values for the torso a little more, especially darker tones. The contrast is a bit low. I know it's probably due to a reference you are using, but regardless you should make a study go beyond what you see on the ref.
The reason your art turns out blurry as you say, is probably cause in the process you tend to lose really sharp edges that should stay strong even on the more polished version of the study.
Could you provide an example of a more polished work you are not satisfied with?

instead of drawing individual spots from the reference, try identifying "oh this is a muscle, ill draw a muscle on my paper now". you know - not drawing / shading what you see but what it is on the next level of abstraction

draw and shade more simplified, make lines either curved or straight, move away from middle-grounds and compromises and accuracy in a way. same for shading, dont worry about getting the gradient perfect, just kind of indicate where it starts, where it ends, and how sudden it changes

always always always draw faces and hands (and feet) if they are in the shot. it does not have to be detailed, just one quick line to indicate where they are, they give context to the rest of your drawing even if you dont focus on studying them in this particular picture

you are working pencil on paper with a potato cam, dont worry about getting values right or subtle. make the darks really dark, shade the whole page and erase out the light spots, make the picture as clear as possible even from a distance or with eyes half closed

not really what you can do better but an exercise that helped me alot when i was at your level, take any of your drawings, use it as a reference and copy it within 15 minutes. then copy it in 10 minutes, then 5.
they wont necessary look good but it will give you "a taste" on what you should focus on and what is unnecessary details.

keep working anon!

Well, if that's the case, then study the forms more. it helps to draw the contours of the solids that comprise the human body and it also lets you see where you distorted the drawing. Keep at it mate.

>I want to do commissions. Should I?
No. You are going to really struggle drawing what other people want. This drawing is awkward as hell.

Of all the problems, I want to most comment on your composition, lighting & value separation. The front of the figure that's facing us should be much more cast in shadow, so bring those values down, down, down. The dark values in the explosion are so overbearing & dominating over the figure - they should be pushed lighter by quite a bit. I've attached a very quick fix to illustrate this.

Also, not everything needs a gradient. You are straightup pillow shading elements of this piece. It's okay for some things to just be a flat color / value.

I'm not one to nitpick anatomy, but the figure is completely borked. Your execution of foreshortened perspective is very, very poorly done.

The composition is poorly planned. The whole thing just doesn't fit well together at all. Try thumb-nailing your piece next time - zoom out and block in large elements of the composition before going in further.

If you're going to use perfectly smooth digital brushes (ie. no texture brushed), consider overlaying some >subtle< textures over the piece. That perfectly smooth digital look just does not look good.

The background in particular is damning to the piece. Is that a wall? A building? What's that pillar going to the top? Is it supposed to be rectangular, or cylindrical (like a pipe)? The rendering of it all is just so incredibly bare bones, so basic that it heavily detracts from the overall piece. Do not let your backgrounds be total afterthoughts. It looks incredibly amateurish.

Overall, your skill level still seems very rudimentary. I would not consider doing commissions anytime soon. Though props for following through and making a finished piece - it is very important that you keep doing this.

I think it could really benefit from improved lighting on the figure, especially considering the strong, obvious light source. Do this by better defining the planes of the face, shirt (which you sort of did already) & hair. Don't neglect the form of the hair - it is a 3D form just like the face with a front, side, back, etc.

Also, look up references of eyes from the side. Yours is currently off and I can't be assed to fix it for you.

Make a solid color areola with no lines and no texture. Make it about 3 inches in diameter in relation to the character. Blur the edge of the areola about mid way where the transition is still there but not razor sharp or blured to nothing. To create a slight puff to the areola keep the edge thats facing away from the viewer sharper than the edge facing the viewer. Add highlights to one side and shadow to the other...remember that the nipple is a separate shape from the more broad areola shape. There are certain things to work on that catch my view. First, my main issue is that the lineart for the various portions of the body are inconsistent and don't match up with how the body part should look like. The right arm (the girl's left) in the drawing only resembles a quick/crude rendition of an upper arm, and there's fat sticking out near the shoulder that frankly should not be there on a person.

Your left arm (the girl's right) doesn't look right either. It's farther away and therefore should be smaller, but she doesn't seem to have any bicep muscle at all. Even if a girl is curvy, if she were to do that arm pose, there would still be some kind of indentation to demonstrate the bicep is being squeezed together - it's literally how the arm works.

The third issue here is the hair. It doesn't look like an object with its own mass and gravity, it looks like it was quickly drawn on with a circle at the top. You should go and do some hair studies, look at hair, see how it works. Even if you're drawing an east asian person with long straight hair, it doesn't sit on the head completely flat like a piece of paper - there's always some bounce.

It's for this reason that I and others feel that your drawing is /beg/. You're not the lowest of /beg/ by any stretch of the imagination, but you still have further refinement and work to do.

>> No.4560563

>>4560541
Well I highly appreciate your detailed criticism, thank you much. One interesting thing, not that you're wrong, but about not seeing the bicep in her right arm: you would expect to, but I really did the pose and used myself as a reference to draw this and it really wasn't visible, my drawing is pretty accurate to the picture I took of myself (and I'm pretty much built like a girl). Again in theory you are correct but this is just a little discrepancy.
But now the question is would I get this kind of criticism from /beg/? Because if not then I feel that justifies me posting here instead. I would rather be bottom of the barrel /int/ than a highly skilled /beg/, you know what they say in surrounding yourself with people better than you if you want to improve.

I actually think it's nice, but the perspective is definitely off.
The general perspective of the head rotates to the left, yet the facial features don't conform to that and rotate to the right, facing the viewer.
Same thing is going on with the pit of the neck as far as I can tell, the shoulders imply that the torso is rotated to the left like the head, yet the pit of the neck is facing the viewer where the clavicle should be.

Pretty sure you went straight into painting, so my advice would be to do some drawings first where you really pay attention to where the centerline should be on forms in perspective.

Sometimes when you have a lot of trouble to make something look right it's actually because a different part of the image is off. Breasts move and change their shape somewhat when the arm is raised, so the nipple on that side should actually be higher than the one that's visible above the other arm. You placed it level if not slightly lower instead so her breasts end up looking like they're significantly different sizes and levels of saggyness.

Based on the thumbnail I thought this was going to be a painting of an orc. I understand you're probably shifting the skintone towards yellow-green because of the green enviroment, but it doesn't read well as is. Try tinting the shadows green and have the highlights be influenced by the color of the lightsource, but keep the midtones more of a regular skin tone.
Also consider an outfit color that stands out more from the background. The mushroom vest design is really cool, so don't hide it.

Apologies for the late response. Basically the gritpill means you self-discipline and grind fundies for many years to git gud. You tough-out the grind and get rewarded with gains. This might be the worst drawing in this entire thread. Just look at that hairline, ffs. Your sense of edge control is abysmal. There is absolutely no cohesiveness to anything you've drawn - it's like you're drawing every feature completely separate from one another instead of working on one, cohesive drawing.

No one's "mad" at you for making a bad drawing. I promise that no one here cares about you or your shitty work. Whether or not you change up your workflow is completely up to you, because whatever you're doing now is definitely not working.

It looks like you're drawing rather small. I understand that it might seem easier that way, but it's hard to draw accurately on such a small scale because if anything is even just slightly off it will change the appearance of the whole image. You have more leeway on a larger drawing. Drawing so small also automatically makes your rendering look rougher because the texture of the paper looks bigger and more notable on the figure.

Consider doing some studies of hands in different positions and from different angles next. Look up some methods for constructing hands. Try to understand their structure.
