Post paintings, drawings, pastels, watercolors, sculptures, or anything you've created in traditional media for critique

Anything digital is prohibited from this thread, as the media used in traditional painting and the coomer degeneracy of supposedly digital "art" are incompatible.

If you'd like to "level up" your "art skills" in "digital art" please restrict your degeneracy to the digital containment threads, or better yet buy traditional supplies and learn to be an artist instead of an embarrassment to your family.

nah but youre right i dont wanna steer your thread away just pulling the punches you deserve OP

we really are moronic coomtards

but whos fappin to well drawn landscapes at 4am?

look

TRAD- you can feel the form
you can drip drop doop emotions
you can take a literal shit, can it, and call it art

DIGI- this pen is made of plastic
but my soul carries forth with no remorse
so yes ctrl + z deletes all difficulty and saccharine saving the canvas
and you don't really get the nice finished product
but everyone gets to enjoy art finally!
no longer is one painting bound to a rich patron

you're fighting a losing battle OP

the medium is not trash, you and your pocketbook need a cafe job so you can save up money for a goddamn tablet, find out you don't hate/wait okay so having followers isn't so bad

The climate is different too

TRAD appeals

>The subtleties of likeness continue to allude me.
For the areas of the face that contain the "likeness", like the eyes, bottom of the nose, and lips, freehand the drawing/painting. That's likeness 101. Freehanding those aspects will lend character to the parts of the body most specific to individual people. You'll never get likenesses by measuring every aspect of the face, some of it has to be done on the fly.

I changed the sky and dried out some areas of brushwork in this painting. Gonna take a break for the rest of the day and try adding to some of the other figure paintings I've done the past month.

The composition is a bit awkward since you placed a foreground element close to the edge. Stuff like that makes a piece feel crowded which is at odds with the simple and pieceful landscape you painted otherwise.
In the future either give elements like this some space, or fully commit and allow for something to be so close to the viewer that it's partially cut off.

Not a bad attempt. There are some things to look at, and pay more attention to next time - or to keep working on this.
One: hues. They need more unification - look at the attached photo, see how his are more unified? (Marc Bohne, FYI) That's what this needs - the browns and greens of the ground need just a touch of the blue of the sky to unify it more. A scene like this wouldn't have vivid greens like that, color is more washed out in fading light.
Second, detail. The lack of any detail in the field is jarring to the higher level of detail in the trees. And, the trees could use some more refining, in the closer ones - and some rimlight/highlights at the top. Texture can just be the illusion of it - look at the attached - he's using very loose brush strokes, but is still giving the eye enough data to think "field" and "trees". What you have looks like green and brown snow, or sand.
Finally, invest in a fan brush. The clouds can be saved. let it dry, and add some more layers of paint. Clouds are fun to paint, so give it a shot - these aren't credible, but fixing them would raise the success level of the panel considerably.
You're going in the right direction, just start paying more attention to things like color composition and unity, brushstrokes, and detail levels.

I'm thinking you could go with some stronger and perhaps more saturated darks, just to push your range of value a little more, and a few harder edges (for example on the bottom where the jar touches the table, make that occlusion and cast shadow much darkerthan it is now) it will probably push it to greater heights

The feedback is very welcome, thank you. It’s too bad the Bohne photos I find are such low resolution since I love his work and he does an excellent job of creating realism without insane details.

I do have fan brushes but I probably don’t use them right. I’ve never taken a painting course so I’m sure my fundamentals are poor. Those clouds were done with the fan brush just spinning it then blending and fluffing with a 2” brush. The white was too wet so smeared unfortunately so they don’t look cumulus at all anymore. You are definitely right about the lack of texture and details in the foreground and I’d love to be able to study a guy like Bohne’s strokes to understand how he is doing this. Maybe you know where I could find instruction on these types of foreground strokes. I’ve been thinking about just a few canvases of nothing but clouds to practice and this may sound crazy but I’ve never attempted to paint over dried paint. Everything I’ve done has been wet on wet. I love being able to complete a piece in one 90-120 minute period and then move on. I get far more joy painting something new than trying to perfect past mistakes.

I’m sure I can do better, and more than all I want to push the realism and emotions of the subject without painting like a perfectionist and spending days on each piece. Bohne seems to paint loose and these look like he should be able to paint them swiftly but he is great capturing that realism and feel.

I understand that everyone looks different. That's fine. Your problem is that you stylize without understanding the underlying anatomical structure.

I saw the girl you supposedly referenced. Your monstrosity looks nothing like her. You didn't capture any of her features or her sense of character. You just painted your default marshmallow same face that you always paint. I corrected a lot of your issues with reference to Da Vinci. Somebody you should look up to if you have even a modicum of humility somewhere underneath that Picasso-esque layer of ego you carry around with you.

I think the sky is much better than average for me. The colors I think are basically what I was going for, though slightly greener trees might have been a little better. The shoreline sucks unfortunately and really subtracts from this trying to look like a river. Finally I think the sandbars in the center of the river came out better than last time I painted a similar scene. Sandbars are a bitch to look flat against water, rocks in water are much easier to place. Lastly I think I overused the fan brush and should have used anything else for foreground highlighting. Critique would be great and appreciated.

Take a look at your values. Convert this in PS or a drawing app to greyscale. You have the same values in the center of the sky as you do in the ground plane. That's competition for the eye - if you want to make the focal point the sky, lighten the values by tweaking the blues towards a higher value, to offset it from the ground more.
Composition-wise it's okay - you're dividing the panel with a black line right across the center, but that can work if done right - but it's the foreground where it kind of falls apart. It's hard to tell if it's sand or water we're looking at. And, you're using black too much, it deadens and muddies it all. I would use more of the same blue in the skies in the darker values to unify, and to get away from black - black appears very rarely in real life, and you should always use dark values of color for shadows. Color will always be dramatic, and the contrasts between them.

Random spatters don't read as 'clouds" - you, as an artist, can refine and edit the shapes to be appealing and dramatic - and that's just practice and observation. I take cloud pictures all the time for reference. You're getting a bit better, but the random scrapes of shapes aren't working. Clouds are influenced mainly by wind, so remember to try and build the 'flow" of the clouds, and use brush strokes to indicate what direction they're moving in.

Also, watch guys like Chuck Black and Andrew Tishler on YouTube. You're at the 'blocklng" stage with clouds, you just need to learn how to refine them.

Honestly, do lots and lots and lots of studies. When I started out I used to kinda hate reading that and the whole "build a visual library" thing because it sounded so time consuming and I just wanted to be able to paint imaginary environments right off the bat, but that's really the only way to do it. Do studies from photos, master studies of old paintings and modern ones you like, even of concept art if you're into that. Eventually you'll get comfortable enough with different environments and it'll become much easier to draw them from imagination.

Also use reference! Even when painting from imagination, it doesn't mean you shouldn't use references for your colors, or textures, or composition, or whatever.

No, his narcissism and mental issues are real. Note: it's never about talking about art, or helping others with tips, or critiques, it's LOOK AT ME ALL THE TIME.

That's why i don't bother responding to him. There's no point. He's not part of any community here, he's just using this forum for whatever mental masturbation he's engaging in. Nobody here gains anything interacting with him.

you need to understand "outlines" not as a line you put around an object to separate it from others, but as the completion of the form receding into space. It's just as much part of the form as everything that's "in front" of it. And people that say outlines don't exist in nature are just being pretentious, anywhere the form on an object recedes in space it becomes darker in value, photography has just misguided artists into thinking somehow light can eliminate the completed form of an object.

Yeah I've been trying to push for that more and more but I still have a way to go as a lot of them tends to look kinda flat no matter what.

I tried to be more conscious of where I add more detail, value, and shape contrast, but I'm still having issues with getting darker vs brighter areas.

I'm doing these alla prima and without using black (a mix of raw umber ans phtalo blue makes up my darks) so maybe that's part of why it's making it so difficult? Or maybe I just need to work on my values..

Maybe try burnt umber and ultramarina blue as another chromatic black, although raw umber and phtalo blue works too, it's good you don't use a black straight from a tube. I think it's more a matter of not grouping your values together. Bill Perkins has some good lessons on NMA on it, maybe those will help. Anyway keep it up, your work is already quite nice.

her jaw is nonexistent, the planes of the nose are flattened out, eyes too large, neck too thin, mouth too small, and ears too high up. And I'm not sure why her hair is "spiky" like that. You seem to not have a good understanding of proportions, and in spots it's hatched but in other spots there's no form at all and it looks like you tried to flatly apply the texture of the pencil.
