I have a question.
1. Is copying mandatory to be able to draw well?
2. If number one is true, does doing careful copies of Bargue drawings help you get there?
3. Is there a more efficient way to get better at copying if all of the above are correct?

not OP - but that is actually good - you build the boddy in perrspective and with boxes as it seems like - study more anatomy and draw a lot of gestures - if u have a camera use it and shoot gesture-images of yourselfwith the interval-function ( like 150 pics every 2 sec i do this and hit rly helps me :) just keep the grind up and draw things you would normally draw

Not him, but:
1: absolutely. It’s impossible to draw everything purely from imagination. From details in backgrounds to stuff like folds in clothing, you’ll be needing to use your observational skills to bring life to your art. Additionally, copying things like style and such is how you develop your own unique art style.
2: you should be doing careful copies of absolutely everything that catches your attention, even things that don’t. Start with still life, plenair, reallife models, etc... you should always be using art as a tool to put down what you see in the world around you on paper. Carry a notebook and draw all the time. Studying also requires you copy and draw what you’re instructed.
3: pretty much everything I said above. Draw all the time, start with real life, but doing studies of other people’s art is perfectly fine too. You shouldn’t limit yourself to just one thing though.

>>4523654
1. yes (2-3. the best way to learn from copying is disarming the references into simple shapes (do it over the ref at the beggining), try to redraw these shapes, reduce opacity of this layer and draw over there, if you practice enough you will be able to directly draw references into simple shapes and later on, directly draw ref because you will do the process in your head.

>>4523656
dont listen to anyone here, your shapes have a lot of dinamism, kinda remind me trigger studios style, there is not much i can do for you because you are in the right path
you should study that kind of style, overstylized one and see if you like it or directly study that wacky anime style.

>>4523658
its a nice piece, i see that you know what you are doing with your anatomy, but there are a few things you can do to be better.
-the lineart takes focus from it because is too dark, use a brush with less opacity and try to merge it with the render, not too much but enough to make it "dissapear"
-you are doing coom art, so it should be more appealing, try to study coomer artists and see where the lines are more appealing, your lineart is too generic and constantly have lines in places where kills forms (under boob for example)
-study hands, take photos of your own and try to draw them with a process like i mention above.
-face. one of the more important aspects of coomer art is the appeal of the face, i tried to draw but i don't do this kind of semi realistic faces very often, so is kinda shitty.
-stop being cringe, that dick on the wall, stop with that humour.
-try to practice shadows, your render have bases, but it looks like its a wip, again, go and study good coomer artists and learn how they render.

There's nothing wrong with using textured brushes or textures from photos in your work, but you need to use them in the right place.
Hair for example consists of many fine strands, it shouldn't have a grainy/dotted texture.
Also, the color of the enviroment should affect the color of the shadows, currently she looks pasted onto the background.

loomis is some guy who did some artbooks 50 years ago, outdated info that people here dont take seriously.

i like how the girls is the main focus, but there are some problems. you keep your proportions right, but they aren good, the biggest problem here are the legs, the head look like a mask becaause the form, this is because you tried to draw frankie head on a normal body. the colors are pretty good, just focus on the anatomy a aand you will be good.

>>4525434
good to see something aside from anime girls. i cant see his left arm, is the only problem with this one and the details in some tentacles make you lose the focus on the charaacter, aside from that is nice.

>> No.4525466

Not OP, just giving some thoughts and (you)s

>>4525388
The line work and coloring is good, the values are decent, but the proportions and anatomy are absolutely fucked. The lower legs are far too small compared to the thighs, the boobs hang at weird angles, the neck is long and at a painful angle, a nonexistent right shoulder, and has a complete pancake face with no jawline. It's also almost imposs for a cock to do that to a woman, but that borders more on artistic choice, though it makes her look like she has a dick at first glance.

You just need to do figure studies, which means authors like Loomis and Hampton are exactly what you need. People say look at the sticky because it has links to a ton of resources you can use for free.

>>4525190
Nice and simple. I like it. Try not restating every pen stroke you do, and the drawings should come out cleaner. I do the same thing and I'm trying to stop it.

>>4524748
The redhead's eyes are kind of close together. I'm not sure about the composition, is there a specific reason it's at this weird angle, slightly pushed to the side?

>> No.4525484

>>4525464
Thanks for the feedback. The reason you don't see the left arm is because there is none, the tentacles popping from his shoulder are the arm. I realized kinda late into the drawing that I should have drawn the wrapping lines to suggest those tentacles are pointed toward the viewer, but by then erasing it would have been too messy. I'll try to keep the details more focused nest time.

If by card art you mean for things like MTG, you're on the right path. One of the most important aspect of MTG art its readability at both full size and at a few inches large. The WIP is good at full size, but the value structure makes it hard to discern on my phone screen. I don't know to much about splash illustrations so I won't comment on that.,

The salamander thing is really good. No joke better than 100% of posters I've seen on /ic/, and I hope to be on that level eventually. The only thing I can suggest is that is doesn't have the amount of detail that is typical of an average MTG card.

You definitely have the skill needed to GMI. Take commissions if you don't already, stream on Twitch if you're comfortable with it, and post to reddit for some free publicity. If you aren't familiar with reddit, check out /r/imaginarynetwork and /r/mtgporn (it's sfw).

you are being a little timid with the values and plane changes, you can allow yourself to exaggerate the volumetrics of the salamander alot more, showing how the planes relate to the very ambient light.

Ofcourse not to say go really contrasty, that would also start working against the mood, but bigger commitments to planar changes instead of washing out the values. Really show its a cylinder going round and round.

Same goes for the pillar, use the cracks as opportunities to show how they wrap around the form, be wary if you are simply drawing them flat on like graphics. This should be applied to the Salamander as well - use its pattern to show the volumetrics of the body, how its turning in space - be wary of the drawing aspects - how the joints attach, how they sit in space. for example - im not convinced by the upper lower leg.

Compositionally you crowded both corners, which in a way makes the image more of an icon - graphic and symmetrical, but you are not utilizing the ground plane to show z-depth, showing how a texture would compress into space, currently your depth is created through a very flat overlap stacking that makes the background look like a theater-stage

The pillar also tapers in a strange way, its thick at the bottom, but thin at the top - think of the design of the pillar as well - what structure would it belong to, is it an old castle, is it a tower? How did it fall apart?

The trees or the area around could also be burnt more or slightly on fire - would give you an opportunity to introduce other odd light sources that would hit the salamander from different angles than the ambient fog light - you could use this to again exaggerate the read and planar changes of the salamander, and to compositionally create more smaller micro compositions.

cont.

t seems you nudged your way into this piece, and youve done very well - the read would have been stronger had you planned a massing and distribution of shadow and light more clearly from the beginning - look up Jaime Jones process, spend more time in the big-picture design phase.

Your overall skill is good, and you are doing a lot with what you have. My advice would be to spend time in both camps: Graphical and Volumetric.
One
Spend time honing your compositional design, simplifying lighting schemes to pure black and white and knowing what information to keep in and what to edit out for a more clear and appealing read.

Two -
Simple volumetric control, cylinders, boxes etc - texturing on top of them, draw a lot from imagination and draw through (but im sure you are already doing this)

Good luck, you will get there for sure!!

But if you want to keep thinking you've got them down when you haven't, and as a result keep being a mediocre artist, that's on you.

All of the issues I see in your work come from lacking fundamentals.

Cool,

If you want to improve you should practise having good simple volume control, and working the whole pose and drawing in its entirety.
You are decent at rendering, but this approach of noodling your way to a finished picture will hinder your development in the long run - its a series of slow guessworks that eventually could lead to a finished thing that was worthwhile. (some of the time)

Im sure if you took this specific piece, and redrew it in pencil a couple of times, focusing more on the gesture and the composition, and only when you feel like the energy is there in the picture, and you understand spatially what is happening you render it - you would arrive at a much more convincing image.

Its way easier to finish something when the foundation of the image has been dealt with thoroughly - when you have solved the volumetrics and connections of the different forms its much easier to render them convincingly.

Keep it up! :-)

noodling is fun, and its good to do it sometimes and just see where the piece takes you, but its a very inconsistent way of working, and you can easily dodge solving your image by just changing it to something you could more easily draw - so sometimes its more fruitful to try and tackle the difficult area and see if you can make it look natural or appealing.

Anyway, i just wanted to also say, its not that you cant noodle ever, do it for fun still - it was more that i could kind of see the way you worked the image, and doing it that way can sometimes be like dancing around the "problem" or the overall thing.

Alright, ill shut up now, have fun dude! :-)

the maain problem of this piece is the skin color of the monster is the same of the smoke and background. you should make the skin more dark, check bazelgeuse from monster hunter for thee head, i think that kind of magma under the head scales will boost this to the sky.

>>4525501
this one gonna have the same problem, you need to push the vaaaalues aa bit more to make the character the main focus of the piece, the only thing i dont like from this one is how the nose looks attached to the head.

>>4525524
move the arm, aim for a position where you can see the hand. and do the right hand on the position of the current right, if you render the head a bit more, add some shine, some liquids like blood, your work can be in the front page of artstation.

holy shit man thanks for the fantastic feedback. I wish I had gotten this while I was working on it. thank you for this.

some context to the tower: I had originally design the image with a sharp 3-point perspective, but struggled getting the foreground elements to read well. Because of this, I cropped it, removing a lot of the foreground elements. But doing this brought on it's own issues like the lack of depth, and as I pushed through it I compressed the values too much, weakening the overall picture. This is an issue that echoes throughout my work. The image I included with this post feels like it suffers from the same. I often struggle to find how I should portray the foreground and because of this everything feels, like you said, staged on a theater and not real life. On Top of that, while I render I tend to move everything towards a middle value unintentionally and find myself throwing multiply layers overtop of it constantly to try to bring the value down.

I'll be taking your advice and adding 3 /2 tone composition studies and cylinders/cones + texturing to my dailes. hoping I can get some mileage on that so my current wip doesn't suffer the same fate.

and again, thank you for the effort you put into this. I know putting critique on this site is a gamble on whether the person listens or pushes you away and calls you a ponce. I respect the risk you too and appreciate it

thank you for the advice for both. Funny enough, the base colors I did for the salamander where based off the marco bucci video where he paints color in grayscale view. Theoretically (if marco's point is to be believed) the color should be fine being the same as the background, but that would only happen if I didn't fuck up the values as hard as I did.

as for the other, I'm going to better connect the fold at the base of his nose to the rest of the face and focus on darkening the main body more, leaving the outstretched palm in light so it gets more depth

thank you again for the feedback senpai

if thats a current wip of yours, the soldiers in the snowy place, you are already making a lot of progress - the snow is a potential for creating an interesting graphical pattern with lost and found edges btw - you can play with omission of detail and purposefully flattening the image with the snow, while retaining depth through the place where the snow is graphically broken by trees or ground showing!

Why?
1) The mishmash of random Jewish, alchemical, “hermetic” and Taoist images is distracting in ways that take one away from the art and into their heads. If they know what the images mean they might even feel spiritually competitive, one-uppish impulses.

2) From a story standpoint (Assuming you are working on a manga, otherwise why draw in manga style?), if you have to work in any of the themes, phocusing on one or two BELIEVABLE spiritual systems will cut down on the necessary background research. I do not mind other people's feedback.
1) The character I drew is a Hermetic from our Mage, WoD campaign. The concept is that he's tattooed himself with the symbols he may need to practice magic. He's the Yinyang as a non-dual symbol. However, I think I understand what you're saying.
2) I draw in manga style because well it is the only style I've known drawing to. Any suggestions on how to move forward would be appreciated. Also, I'm not trying to defend myself here and certainly I would not call myself an expert but I have read some into spiritual themes. After I read the Bhagavad Gita I now moved to Corpus Hermeticum.

I was surprised to find worthy critique in ic since previous attempts at it had failed. Thank you my anon.

Heh. Had to Google WoD.
I am not trying to denigrate your spiritual insight/reading level. Just warn that spiritual and especially occult (Hermetic for example) oriented people tend to be obsessive geeks, often taking pride in their knowledge and tend to pick shit apart when it might not even be your main area of interest when it comes to your character.
But since your image is for a RPG ( I think?) I don’t think you need to worry really. It’s not like you will have to describe or depict actual Hermetic magical Workings or a Detailed knowledge of Cabala etc.

Frankly if your hands and feet are drawn and not traced, (or drawn by you and then drawn over for a clean line) then you are doing really good bro. If you are not pursuing art training on a really serious level no worries. You’re good to go. If you are, keep your eye out for sales at places like NMA, or whatever you see around here that turns you on.

another of my favorite artists on this site, your work have a very unique style, these are personal preferences but i think you should add a bit more of form to some areas to improve the sexual appeal of the piece aka pander coomers on social media.

>>4528506
anatomy is good, the characters look a lot like the originals but this lineart is terrible anon, try a brush with more line weight variation, double line in some areas, lineart dosnt have to be perfect, just readable and appealing, there are a lot of mangakas that you can check.

your art look like generic asian art, isnt bad, but you are half the way. your anatomy and render need a bit of work, try to focus on pushing your values to more darker tones and dont blend them, learn when a shadow is solid and when is not.

Nice

You are slowly noodling your way to a finished thing, theres no problem with that, but from looking at how you are treating the face you need to be aware of the simple planer changes a bit more.

Process wise, it would be way easier to change the planes in the textural and linear way that you are doing on top of a block in thats much more clear and well constructed.

While the overall read is good, and the image has a lot of spirit, you are losing form, or confusing certain areas - im not sure if this is whether you dont know what happens there, and the scribbly textural style is to make up for your uncertainty, or whether it is intentional - either way i would recommend treating the planes in big strokes a little bit again.

Good luck :-)

Thanks! that other piece I posted was before the salamander, I had made it as a directed piece to try to apply to a historical card-game job.spent time studying acurite armywear from my favourite era and army. Unfortunately, the listing went down before I finished it. It still ended up being something I felt could go into my site to be a good body of work. I'll take the flattening of snow in mind, I remember listening to something with Gregory manchess where he commented on the reason he loved painting so was what you mentioned here, where it loses so much edges that it pushes the depth of objects when they do show up, wayyy apart

Included here are some short 15-30 min 3-tone studies I did since today's my day off, felt like I had to keep my word for the good folks in here. re-watching scott robertson and peter han stuff to get my texturing up to par as well

thank you again for everything everyone has posted here. I kinda threw my art up without thinking that much was going to happen.Cheers!

Good stuff, but some of the construction is off. The way her underwear just lays flatly against her buttcheek/thigh, instead of curving with the contour. Also her form is awkwardly positioned for her ass to be in that plane. Work on gesture and laying down 3D forms, especially in the torso.

Aside from the obvious line cleanup you pointed out, I think the right arm's forearm needs some more shading on it since the biceps should be casting a shadow over it, the way its shaded now kind of gives it a "from the side" look

That does look better. I decided to leave them like that because I wanted to keep it stylized but in the end it comes off as weird looking. The balance between stylization, shape language and how it affects anatomy in a way that pleases the eye, but also conveys realism is not something I can do yet. Thanks for the edit anon
