IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

previous >>4511267

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have atleast read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

My goal with this one here was trying to improve at colors.

>didnt put much effort into the background, so no need to critique it, i guess.
>Changed the haircolor, otherwise stayed really close to the reference image/ traced a bit
>all in all, for my current skill level, im kinda happy with the results. Still lots of stuff to improve at
>the hair sucks. Dont really know how i could tackle it best/ what i should do differently
>Everything looks rough (well... it is). Probably nice if you want to go for that painterly style, but how do i manage to make it smooth? (using krita)
>obviously, tried to work without those black outlines. (mostly)
>Fingers are fucked (didnt put much effort into it)

Any other advice to improve, or some flaws im lacking the knowledge to see/ name/ put my finger on it?

How do you do soft shadows?

>> No.4514188

>>4514177
It's mainly just practice although higher quality pencils and paper can help a little bit.
If you want a really soft gradation then you should shade very slowly and work in multiple light layers, at least until you get more experienced. Lay down an extremely light layer of tone with a hard pencil, then partially overlap another layer on top of it to build up a slightly darker value, then another layer, etc, slowly working up to the darkest values. You can also blend out a hard edge into a soft edge by very lightly going back and forth over the hard edge until you get the desired effect.
Don't use paper stumps or any other kind of smudging until you learn what the pencil is capable of.

Begin by looking at figures as simple lines (line of action), then build on it using simple volumetric shapes like cubes and spheres. Think very simple, the point here is not to get a good results; its to teach you to analyze gestures quickly and draw it.

An exercise or study takes focused work, meanwhile doodling is just relaxing. If you want to learn, then you challenge yourself by doing something that is outside your comfort zone, ie. not autopiloting your drawing.

I know it can be frustrating, but you gotta keep trying if you want to go past the stage. If you are not already; only allow yourself one minute max on each gesture. Less time is ideal for warm ups so you put down few, but confident lines to capture the gesture. Giving yourself too much time will only make it harder for you to not obsess over details.

Mostly depends on three factors (ignoring crabthink): how many hours per day, how many hours total, study vs. drawing percentage. It is a good idea to make sure you put in the work every day so that your brain can process it while doing other things like sleeping. Overworking is not always a good idea because then it can turn into a unfocused practice. You are better of doing something else in that case, maybe give feedback to other crabs or gert some inspiration from other artists.

don't think of it in terms of how many each day. there are assigned pages of exercises that you're supposed to work through, so start at the first one and do your best on completing those pages. If that means you need to invest lots of time into making each mark, then do that. don't rush because you think you're supposed to be able to get things done quickly.

if you have to stop for whatever reason (take a break, arm gets tired, have other things to do), then you can stop in the middle of an exercise, or in the middle of a page. just pick it up again the next time.

then when you're done that assigned exercise, move onto the next one. it will take however long you want it to.

a lot of the first lesson's exercises has links to the drawabox guy's girlfriend doing the exercises in realtime, so you might want to look at those to see how she paces herself.

If I was going to do that I would first try to draw it from the side view, top view etc. Then put vanishing points on a paper and start with a cube in perspective at the angle you want the head to be and try to break down the cube. If you know how the head should look from the side you should be able to draw that side view on a cube at any angle. And just extend that side view toward the vanishing point. It should get you close and then the rest idk I would have to do some trial and error.

>> No.4514859

Well, my post was a joke, but if you're a beginner, ignore texture entirely and focus on large planes, volumes, values etc.
Textures are superficial. Our brains don't even register them when looking at objects, since 90% of our vision is a blur that the brain reconstructs after the fact. If you get the values, colors and shape right, the object will be recognizable even without texture.

Note that texture isn't the same thing as material. The material of an object depends on its local value (how dark it is before the light even hits it), how shiny it is, how reflective it is, what color it is, etc.

When you're past beg, there's many ways of creating textures. Some use texture brushes, which kinda look bad imo. Top tier pros literally enlarge their canvas to 10000 pixels and paint the texture like a normal object, just zoomed in, then downsize the image again.

But in general, we recognize texture by the shape of the highlight on the object. if the highlight is smooth, the surface is smooth. If the highlight is bumpy, the surface is bumpy. If there's no highlight, we recognize it by the transition from midtone to shadow. The shape of the shadow/midtone "line" reveals the texture of the form.

I got to this point in Loomis where you draw his avatar but I feel like I'm arriving at this from looking and copying more than Loomis' techniques (my axis lines are pretty shit). When I try to actually build a face I fail to 'build' at all. It's hard for my mind to understand how Loomis transforms the ovals he draws into fat cheeks, and he seems to pull his chins out from the ether. I sometimes write notes on my excercises as well and It's not about giving myself qualified criticism.
It's not about writing down my thoughts so that I can study them later, because my memory is so shitty from all the weed, either.
Drawing is usually a very intuitive process for me, particularily if I'm focused and in the zone. I find that going over my excercises and trying to write down something helps me break out of this intuitive mode and actually make conscious observations.

inb4: "You should always make observations retard, don't draw mindlessly"
Intuitive ≠ Mindless

Also your posts can essentially be distilled into "oh ehm gee, look at this nerd taking notes! lmfao at his life"
So I'm pretty sure you're just a shitposter, but you made me respond so good job and have your (you)

questions. how much time do you spend polishing/blending? it seems like for anything on a canvas size over 5k x 5k is a fucking lot of effort to go through every last area. next question, is normal to use a smaller 'finished' file size from the original .psd file to help smooth out the details (ie 6k x 6k actually gets posted as 4k or 3k)?

>> No.4516182

I'm starting to draw art that I like to look at, but it takes me 12+ hours of drawing a single character in a single pose, doing a single stroke then ctrl+z'ing over and over until I like the way what I drew (for example an arm) looks. Then a little while later while I'm drawing another part of the body, I realize that the arm I drew isn't actually in perspective any more with the rest of the body. So I use the transform tool and manipulate the arm into a perspective and then set it to 20% opacity and draw on top of it, painstakingly ctrl+z'ing after every stroke I don't think "looks right". And I repeat this process for pretty much every part of the body.

I know this is unbelievably stupid and inefficient and I'm not actually an artist, more like an editor with a lot of patience... But the thing is I started drawing over a year ago and I did a lot of drawing for a few months. But I felt like I wasn't going to improve unless I learned art properly. So I downloaded a bunch of artbooks and video lectures and practiced them religiously for a few weeks, and then burned myself out and didn't come back to art for a year.

Sorry for blog post but I wonder if anyone else has been in the same situation? I actually enjoy drawing even if it takes me 12 hours to draw something basic. I know there are good resources out there and teaching myself basic lessons in perspective and construction would save me a lot of time. But I just cant bring myself to do them without totally making myself miserable.
