IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

To illustrate what >4501174 is saying.

You need a plan, you can't start rendering like that without knowing what goes where. I like to incorporate my sketch into my painting process to preserve the maximum of the sketch shapes, Also you get more texture as the sketch lines seeps a bit out the painting here and there.

Just put you sketch on multiply and start blocking out a rudimentary value / color base. Be crisp with your shapes (personally i tend to lasso them). Then you can merge and start painting, rendering on top of it.

When you render, especially in the beginning, try to be conservative with your strokes. Big deliberate strokes that describe big bold shapes, and use a solid brush. As you get toward a finished piece you are gonna use finer and finer strokes depending of how detailed you want it to be.

Also don't be afraid to use the whole value range, play with saturation in the midtones (having a dash of saturation at the limit between shadows and light planes usually works well), lose edges in shadow.

If you do all of that, your painting should get a bit less muddy.

If something is just a sketch/underdrawing then you'll judge it by an easier standard and let certain ambiguities and standards slide, at least until you gain enough experience to correct this thought process.

The nuzzle looks great, the issue is the rest of the gun is now not aligned. Something nice to do is look up 3d models of things you want to draw on sketchlab and kinda twist it yourself there to get an idea.

you do need loomis because the hair/hairline placement on the head is so weird and off, the brows are really low on her face, especially for an anime girl chara, and the eyes are far apart but not in a stylistically pleasing way. your coloring (not rendering) is so nice though. literally cannot stop looking at it. remember me when you're pro please

Not horrible for a real beginner.
Just put extra effort in comparing your lines with the ref. The things to pay attention to are the angle, length, and the position relative to other lines.
If you look at your legs you would see that they are very sloped whereas in the ref the legs are perpendicular to the floor.
Your best bet currently is to simply forgetting about the details and just looking at the big shapes. When looking at a ref squint your eyes and observe the shapes, their sizes and position. Also pay attention to negative space; in the example of your ref you can see a clear white triangle between the man's arm, leg, and torso. Paying attention to this triangle will make deciding the positions and angles of the legs arm and torso much easier.

I dunno what books you've read, but If you haven't read "keys to drawing" yet then read that.
That isn't gesture and you should only really start gesture once you have a handle on basic drawing.
Basic drawing would be something like having good judgement for angles and distances, being able to draw proper curved lines, starting to be able to see things in shape and Form.
Which is why you should read keys to drawing because it deals with that sort of stuff.
Also draw a lot in general without being to concerned about following any sort of technique, it should just be trying to recreate an image accurately without being anal about it.
Think about it like basic training for your senses.

What does it mean to learn/study forms? All the information I've found on the topic has been incredibly brief. "These are the three forms. If you squint a little, you can sort of divide objects into them. You should do that. Now on to the next topic."

I'm struggling a lot with simplification in general. Real-world objects are infinitely complex, and I don't really understand what process I'm supposed to be using to break them down into lines or forms or whatever I'm supposed to be drawing.

Wrong.
People here post shit so bad, one immediately can tell that they neither ever studied fundies nor have they read the sticky.
You study basic proportions, perspective and anatomy first, then you draw something based on that and THEN you come here to ask for critique. But instead of doing that people just want to immediately draw anime waifus without putting any work into it, so they post their attemts here and want basic fundamental knowledge to be spoonfed to them.
Look at this >>4504911 fucker right here. He has been told what to do and yet he keeps repeating the same mistakes.
Or here >>4504935 Tell me that this guy has ever opened up a loomis/bridgman/hampton book. He didn't even bothered finishing the hands, he posted unfinished shit. It is simply not possible to give adequate critique to someone who doesn't finish his stuff and much to their detriment so, since a finished piece reveals much more VALUABLE information on what could be improved upon.
Also I could spoonfeed him an info which would immediately improve their shading and spare them 100 hours of grinding, but I won't. I WANT them to grind those 100 hours.

The people here fail at such simple things as opening google images and searching up basic proportions (which take 20 minutes to memorize).

"Grind fundies" has no meaning. It's just a fancier way of saying "draw better". Well duh, everyone knows they should draw better, but it's impossible to draw well without first drawing bad for a long time. No one has ever come to /ic/, learned that they should "grind fundies", and then they grind fundies and come back and post work that is free of /beg/ errors. It just doesn't happen, it's a myth. You have to bump into the problems for yourself while you're working on real drawings in order to learn how to overcome the problems. A good teacher would give someone targeted advice on how to overcome the specific problems they're experiencing, but as we all know, the "hurr durr go grind fundies" crowd are incompetent themselves and they are incapable of giving that sort of targeted advice.

I take the “I want to draw anime well” as I want to able to draw characters right?
well there tons of thing that you require I suppose the skill and style you want is those good pixvi artist. The fundies you need is anatomy (read the books and understand how the muscle pull and stretch and draw as well) the second is understanding gesture or flow, how the character action is easily read and be dynamic, I think looking references of poses and trying to draw them will help at the same time fill the force and tension of the action, theres tons that goes here like contraposta, making the pose feasible and dynamic. The second will clothing. Just pick up Hogarths book about clothing, it tells you exactly how to draw folds, wrinkles, drapery, and creases. I suppose color and value can come next as well. Gurneys book about color and light will suit your purposes and do grayscale studies to get your sensitivity to values level up. I could put shit like perspective and construction here but just read “Perspective made easy” and Framed Perspective as well. For line art? I guess copying artist you like is a good start but I know for sure copying as a whole is GREAT THING just make sure you don’t end up copying mistakes without knowing that they’re.
I could go on like understand hair and how it flows from the scalp but this comment will be too long by now.
I will tell you now, it will take months to see improvements but if you manage to draw/study 3-6 hours per day you can reach your goal in years if you’re consistent with drawing every day. Like give yourself goals every week or every month like draw 10 hands every day and finish a piece once a month and copy 5 drawings you like every week.
Hope this helps.

If you can slip in a couple hours of drawing every day then you don’t need to give up. You’re not too old to draw its better to start now than to regret it later in life when you’re like in your thirties.
I don’t want to really admit my age but I just recently turned 18 and was browsing ic since I was 17 and started getting interested to drawing when I was 15, imagine 3 years of life if I had this routine.. I would been good by now but no I rejected the fundies and literally “just draw” without any order or destination. When I draw I just don't feel like I make any progress because I have no formally developed skills for anatomy, perspective, and even any attempt I make at construction is just haphazard guesswork. I can't standardize the construction process for myself despite desperately trying to copy how other artists construct. My drawing process is so scuffed, I basically just abuse the undo button and the transform tool until things look right and spend 6+ hours drawing a single character in a single pose (just sketching/drawing, no color. even using a reference). I have a bunch of artbook pdfs and video lectures for drawing from life classes downloaded, and even though this is going to sound like cope, I honestly feel like each of them is nothing but the "draw the owl" meme, and I just end up getting mogged by Hampton, Vilppu, Proko, et al. I can't lie I have never gotten very far into any of these, decision paralysis is one reason and the other is I'm probably too ADHD to sit down and read and reread dry academic texts while practicing along. The annoying part is there are so many normie artists who I think make cute, appealing art and I'm sure a good number of them didn't grind through Figure drawing artbooks. Most of them probably, simply spent thousands of hours drawing for fun and trained their brain like a neural network AI. Which is basically what i have to do too I guess

I suspect there is a period of time of around several hundred hours where someone needs to draws idly and for fun before they can really learn in a structured, organized way. Imagine taking an advanced Literature study class when you know 200 words in English. Even if it means picking up bad habits (like learning english in a scuffed way and you mispronounce some words, it's better than nothing at all), I still suspect that it is necessary to do this because you build some very very low level neurological associations-- coordination between your hand, your tablet/paper/canvas, and your brain.

It seems increasingly apparent to me that before grinding fundies, it is absolutely necessary that one must have approximately 500 hours of just drawing random things they fancy. Even if it means they pick up "bad habits" . This is probably a gross misrepresentation but I simply believe the first step of art is learning how to learn, and that involves building a pathway from the spatial reasoning parts of your brain to your fine motor control. As humans we can visualize, conceptualize, but art is the act of applying those spatial reasoning abilities in a fine tuned, specific way.

A lot of artists online spent hundreds/thousands of hours in their teenage years drawing and they already established that neurological-coordination-foundation previously mentioned, so it's easier for them to learn from artbooks and other resources. And so when they see a beginner ask for help, they refer them to the same resources they used, which they were able to utilize because of their foundation. But to stretch the analogy, its like handing someone who speaks 200 words in English a complex Grammar book. You can only develop ""beginner level"" skills like perspective once this foundation exists, like learning to stand before learning to walk.

I never said don't do fundies in my post >>4505347 . I said draw anything you fancy. Which can include fundies. But I speculated that a Real Art Beginner™ will have a slower rate for learning perspective and fundamentals than someone with 500+ hours from drawing, even if that experience is years old. Because the guy who spent all of high school doodling in his chemistry notebook already has those important neurological associations from spatial reasoning to fine motor control. Does that make sense?

The important part is to draw. Draw whatever. But if you try to grind fundies as a True Beginner™ you will likely become discouraged when you aren't absorbing the lessons from the fundies because your brain is still trying to learn before it can learn. At least that is what I am suspecting, having analyzed my own awkward, fumbling attempts to grind fundies. Which is why I suggested True Beginners™ should draw what they /want/ because you're more likely to stay motivated if you incrementally draw cute anime girls better than incrementally drawing boxes better, in my humble opinion
