What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

The colors are pretty saturated and strong. Maybe redshift it or blueshift it or something to get more harmony in the colors? Kinda hasty example of but you get the point. There are lots of ways to do it. I just made a mask of the girl, put a light pink opaque color on its layer, and then lowered layer opacity to 20%. I don't know, it just depends on what you want out of the colors. You could also just lower the sat a bit on the hair.

Stop using a soft air brush for everything and learn to blend harder edges with softer edges.

Focus on improving your values, by studying light and shadow. Drawing anime looking characters is not an excuse for cheating your way out applying good contrast or values to an image. Even if you're going for a delicate or cute looking aesthetic.

You strike me as the type that rushes through shit or never complete a drawing. Take. Your. Time. Learn to enjoy the process, dude.

Thanks for the feedback. Tbh, I should finish my work but I get really bored if i spend too long on a drawing. I was trying to develop a "quick clean yet finished approach" to drawing. My ultimate goal is to be a webcomic artist so being able to complete drawings quicly is paramount

>I was trying to develop a "quick clean yet finished approach" to drawing.

>so being able to complete drawings quickly is paramount
I understand your intent, but you're stunting your progress with this mentality.
"Quick or "clean" is not synonymous with rushed and half-assed. One of the best ways to develop a quick and clean method to creating art is to familiarize yourself with the process and technique.
Refining it more and more till you're so familiar that it eventually becomes second nature. You need to allow yourself the time to explore and let it click in your head what you're actually doing with your hand and what you see in your mind's eye.
That's why i empathized enjoying the process, because enjoying the process of creating will naturally lead you to achieving more creative milestones. If you ask any notable artists I'm sure many of them would share this sentiment.

Imo, It helps to learn and become more knowledgeable with multiple creative techniques that helps you works smarter not harder.

I can tell you have some potential just by that drawing, but you squander that potential by avoiding challenge.
You even avoid drawing hands in that image, which is a shame because that design is decent and can be improved even further by adding some expression through proper form and anatomy.

Saying you get bored is a poor excuse, let's be honest here, anon.

If you don't care to improve then disregard everything I've said and carry on as you do, but if you're serious about improving your skills, then stop bullshit yourself lol

that's hardly true. you would probably enjoy 3D sculpting if you learned the interface. 3D modelling is probably what you're thinking is difficult, which in some ways is true since you need to worry about polygon topology and the method by which you create a model is a little different. With 3D sculpting you literally just morph around a ball without worrying about topology or anything and it's an effective way to build spacial awareness for any artist.

the nature of sharing art just means that you'll be recognized by your content and style. the amount of work and public nature of it also means egos and personalities will get involved. an anonymous imageboard just isn't really a good fit for this kind of subject matter imo which is why so many good artists are just in the discords now. /ic/ is great for resources and the occasional critique, but as an art community it's the absolute bottom of the barrel from any way you look at it. add some /pol/ LARPing as the icing on the cake. I think this term is the key to understand everything. All the artists I've met that are really good don't have any sort of problem regarding the subject matter of their own or other people's drawings. Drawing is seen as merely a tool that lets you do whatever you want. These artists see a drawing while the people who get in these type of arguments see "ideas" attached to said drawings that then get attached to the artist.

The Discord communities tend to offer much better critiques and tend to be tightknit. The thing I noticed is that the best ones are either private commission/critique servers (several which I was invited to) or started by an industry pro.

While pinups are perfectly fine for nearly all of the servers, most of these ban outright porn on principle, or keep it locked behind age verification.

If you go hunting, be sure to read the rules first and scout it out a bit.

Here's a few videos explaining what anon said here in-depth >>4486186

I strongly recommend to better define your light source and values; right now, it suffers from pillowshading, which will hurt your character, and your character right now kind of blends into the background value wise. Either darken the background a bit first or darken the character/lighten the background, then either use a model (ArtPose Pro or a similar app) or a reference to better define them. Those steps will play a huge role in improving your piece.

Here are some videos on rendering metal.

If you need any further explanation, ask me or anons here and we'll do our best to help out.

These go into depth on the types of surfaces, getting started with basic rendering, and even have a few helpful references for study.

I think what might be throwing you is that the content is spilling out, yet the inside seen through the container is all a uniform value like a single mass. Try indicating a plane change towards the side with spillage, and change the value slightly to indicate where the pudding is pushed against the plastic vs. where it isn't.

This image isn't a great example, but those are hard to find. Point is the drawing right now is like the cup on the right, but it should be like the cup on the left.

Sorry for shitty red-line using a mouse but the left shoulder/ arm is still really wonky. It shouldn't be bending out like that, and makes it look like there's no weight on it. While sfw artists are plagued with normies that go “it’s from X artist I’m gonna like it”

Coomers unironically puts the art before the artist

What I do is just post my art on 4chan without saying or typing anything, and then I change it slightly when posting on social media so it’s impossible to take the /ic/ drawing and reverse image search it.

People might end up attaching a name to the art but it’ll be to the art, not me.

Hi guys, I'm at the end of my line here. I don't know what to do.

Why does my drawing look so bad when its colored in? What's at fault here? Is it my color sense? Is the drawing itself actually unappealing?

If my color sense is off, how do I improve this? I've read James Gurney's book but I can't seem to pick the right color. Should i go learn to paint then? Like should i go out and paint portraits and plein air landscapes and figure painting, etc. Or do I just need to read up on color theory? Should I copy other artists who use color well? How did you personally improve your colors? The only art education I've really had up to this point was figure drawing and perspective so I literally have no idea what to do about colors.

If my drawing is unappealing and ugly, then what should I do?

>> No.4487305

and to follow up, I've copied a bunch of anime artists I admired and picked the right colors and everything but I can't seem to replicate it in my own drawings. Should I just keep pushing on in doing this? Or is there a different approach I need to take?

To add a little more to this if it's worth anything. To me as someone who hasn't been staring at this for hours, only Mario seems a little wonky, and not overly so. The rest is loose enough that you can get away with a little wonk, it can actually strengthen something like this. If it's a birthday gift for a nonartist, or hell even another artist, they're not gonna notice details like that in my experience.

I think that the colors themselves are fine, but you would benefit from using a softer brush to color in the eyes and hair when coloring in quick sketches.
Right now it looks kind of unthoughtfully colored and a really easy fix is to switch to a softer brush on certain parts and to not pick such a pitch black color for things. Pick maybe a more blue-ish shade and layer it with a darker shade on top and for the eyes just add the slightest reflection to make them not look as lifeless while still being quick and not taking too much time.
Also multiplying a bit of blush on takes like 5 seconds and adds a subtle improvement and a bit of life to the picture too. It might not be visible at first glance but subcosnciously brings the picture together more.
I hope this helps!

The redline you've drawn is on point, but it's also like a foot or more closer to the perspective of the viewer, and once again it's a different angle, his hips have been rotated differently to the original pose, which is referenced off of a photo of a person, a person much more muscular than your redline (Though I have drawn additional muscle mass compared to the original reference, not by much though, just increased the length and size of some of his muscle insertions).

The way you've drawn the head though, is great, and gives me great reference to work from, so I'll give it another crack.

They're just complementary colors (yellow and violet) plus the color that's halfway between the two on the colorwheel (red).

If you want to practice, look up a twelve color colorwheel and common color schemes like complimentary, triadic, analogous, etc, then do practice pieces for each.

This is a playlist about color theory in watercolor, but I'm sure there's plenty similar stuff for digital.
