Strive for quantity AND quality.

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.

I'm going through Vilppu's renaissance figure drawing right now and I'm really improving, that and figure drawing everyday. I recommend it.

Go through Vilppu while also drawing anime from observation on the side using the process:

>construction drawing
>observation drawing
>memory drawing
>self critique*

You'll see that memory drawing is very similar to drawing from "imagination", you're forcing your brain to fill in the gaps of what's on your head.

But now the question is, how do you do precise super rounded shading like this?

The problem actually is not with the hips, but instead with you trying to make a pose work that is not anatomically correct in general.
The biggest problem is the leg that is turned towards the camera, I get that you were trying to add a sense of motion but it does not work with the picture or with the general structure of the girl you are drawing. There is no way a leg could turn like that or attach to the body like that which is why you couldn't find a way to make the hips work!
Also with the breasts I could not tell what was going on but I think you had them in profile view so only one was visible which also conflicts with the general pose.
Great energy in your pic btw! Now you just have to maintain that energy while keeping the anatomy reasonable as well.

Same way you get clean digital linework without bitching out and using the stabilizer. Fast and smooth arm motions, and lots of practice. Draw the outline of the area like you're inking linework and then color it in, there's no magic to it.

Yeah I think so too, he was just asking in particular about why the hips didn't work and I am not very good at exaggerating
That's why I tried to tell him he has good energy and to make the anatomy reasonable, but that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be perfect!
The point of anime is to bend and exaggerate things the way you want them for an appealing result.
I think if he found a midway between his pic and my anatomy adjustment pic he would have a really good thing going

There are some subtleties of digital painting that I still don't understand. Like, why does her hair look slightly "grainy" here? If you open this file up in Photoshop and use the color picker on her hair it won't just be the same color on every pixel, there's lots of variation. Was this done intentionally by the artist or is this just an artifact of resizing/compression or what? I think this effect can be desirable but if I were going to color in that hair then I would normally just use one base color and every pixel would have the exact same value (until I put in shadows and highlights of course).

I think the problem here is mechanically, why would you ever adopt this pose? I'm a martial artist so when I think about action poses, there's a certain practicality that needs to be mantained.

The only way something like this would work with a sword would be if its the end of the swing and even then I think legs shouldn't be in the same line for the sake of balance. Just try taking this pose yourself and see what I mean.

Talking with the original artist, not the redliner.

Ok, so your two complaints with that guy's drawing are that it's "begtier" and that it's based on "made up anatomy".
Calling it "begtier" doesn't help you make your case, as we're talking about the concept of stylizing anatomy in general. The argument doesn't revolve around the quality of that specific drawing. Even if you don't like that guy's exaggerated pose, it doesn't mean that someone else couldn't successfully pull off a similarly exaggerated pose.
As for being based on "made up anatomy". Why are big anime eyes based on real anatomy, but bending a leg in a way it normally can't is made up anatomy? What's the difference? Are you saying that in stylization, you're only allowed to scale body parts in unrealistic ways but you're not allowed to rotate them in unrealistic ways? Doesn't that seem arbitrary?

>> No.4480843

>>4480613
saying'' it doesn't matter if your anatomy not the realistic stylization is okay even if it's wrong all for the sake of muh style'' is what i mocking

anons drawing is beg tier alone, his stylization since can be good/bad subjectively i'ts not of my concern however they are based on a real anatomy, so defending the fact that having a broken leg in the literal sense it's okay because muh style it's laughable.

now stilized eyes still have the pupil inside the iris even if they are retarded big, they don't go far below the nose nor does the iris is drawn close to the ear sides in the eye it would look retarded but still plausible because they are still bound to real anatomy, not the realistic style since stylization is derived from a correct anatomy, a correct anatomy doesn't have the leg pointing almost at the front but the knee twisted 10 or 15 degrees wtisted inwards yet the calves in front view for and the feet turning 45 degrees inwards. can you understand the difference between stilization and correct anatomy.

if you believe that a leg can rotate its lower part up and down while this part is twisted inwards 45º but it's okay because is ''my style'' then you are retarded.

>>4480248
the legs are broken but it really depends on what they want to achieve. what you might want is to fully break the other leg too

over all there's a reason why you need to learn te rules to break them because stylization is redesigning the rest of the figure such that the pose is in a warped reality in which it 'makes sense'.

Anatomy (Greek anatomē, "dissection") is the branch of biology concerned with the study of the structure of organisms and their parts.[1] Anatomy is a branch of natural science which deals with the structural organization of living things. It is an old science, having its beginnings in prehistoric times.[2] Anatomy is inherently tied to developmental biology, embryology, comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology, and phylogeny,[3] as these are the processes by which anatomy is generated over immediate (embryology) and long (evolution) timescales. Anatomy and physiology, which study (respectively) the structure and function of organisms and their parts, make a natural pair of related disciplines, and they are often studied together. Human anatomy is one of the essential basic sciences that are applied in medicine.[4]

Are you the Mikufag? I'm going to level with you dude, despite all these things you talk about regarding learning how to draw, in all the years I've seen your art it looks very unappealing and poorly constructed. Not to mention the fact that I have never seen you improve at all.

Instead of criticizing other people on what they should do with their art, maybe you should focus on yourself.

I don't really recommend that, it's too specific, you won't really get anything from it if you don't have a strong grasp on figure drawing.

I went through it when I was more /beg/ and a lot of it I don't really remember, hindsight tells me I'd have benefitted much more if I just drew with that time and focused on figure drawing instead of anatomy.

I'll be 100% honest here, anatomy is like just the cherry on top, if you know how to construct the body in perspective AND you have mileage drawing bodies (like literally thousands of drawings of figures) then you're already good at drawing people, then and only then I'd suggest really learning anatomy so you can achieve master level.

But learning muscle positioning and shit like that when your figures still look like shit, sorry but they'll continue looking like shit and after some time you'll even forget some of that anatomy as it doesn't make that much of a difference.

tl;dr figure drawing and construction >>>> anatomy

"Fundamentals before anime" is a kind of sequential thinking that creates artists who simply can't draw anime. You can use anime to study your fundamentals. They aren't mutually exclusive. You can also study realism and anime simultaneously.

Pic related is from the foreword of that popular アニメ私塾 book by a guy in the Japanese anime industry. See the triangle?
>上手い絵の模写: 上手い人の絵の記号(絵のパターン)を手に入れる
>Copying good drawings: acquiring the symbols of skilled people's drawings (the patterns of the drawings)
>実物の線画化:実物を理解することで、上手い人の絵が理解できる
>Real life drawing: by understanding real life, we can understand skilled people's drawings
>創作活動全般: 落書きや作品制作
>General original creation: sketching, complete OC works etc

Quote from the foreword:
>こうして、学生時代は「自主制作アニメを作る」「上手い絵の模写」「実物の線画化」のトライアングルを繰り返すことで劇的に上達していき、絵を描き始めてからわずか3年でスタジオジブリの入社試験に合格することができました。
>In this way, I made extreme progress during my school years by repeating a triangle of doing my own original anime drawings, copies of good drawings, and life drawings, and only 3 years after picking up drawing I was able to pass Studio Ghibli's employment test.

He was 19 when he started drawing.

Pic related also shows drawings from before he started practising deliberate copying as well as his original anime drawings from ~2 years after that.

You acquire the "anime style" through immersion. If you fap to big animay tiddies you're being immersed in the style enough to be able to replicate it if you have a strong foundation in the fundamentals. If you have over 5gb of smug animay reaction pics you've had more than enough immersion to replicate it. There is virtually no need to copy unless you've never seen an anime pic before in your life.

Doing a single copy with a pen takes a long time for me to the point that I think it might not be useful practice for me at this point. I'll say this as simple as possible. Use real world references, draw from the model and then experiment using the model with the style you chose. It takes a lot of trial and error to compliment fundamentals while deviating away from them through the use of ideal and style.

>> No.4483768

You need fundies to draw, so yes, you need fundies for anime, but fundies is a general concept, it means the fundamentals of art. Vilppu says that: "Art is the methodical application of the fundamentals, there is nothing advanced about art."

Basically to learn art you go through cycles of learning the fundamentals and applying them, each time unlocking new knowledge.

For anime, just like anon pointed out above:

>Learn realism, dedicate some time everyday for fundies
>Copy the art of artists you like
>Make your own original artwork

And keep looping through these 3 points everyday until the day you fucking die, after some thousands hours you'll become a great artist.

also you can be free and draw from imagination too directly with ink, just do it on cheap papers and draw A LOT I think is the most important message.

if you think your lines are shit, draw more and with each drawing try to improve them bit by bit, don't take it too seriously and JUST DRAW MORE! :D

i think you can get a lot of important facts from going through anatomy which you can keep in mind during any phase of your figure drawing. in most cases, you will learn to represent (and recognize) something quicker if you already had academic knowledge about it, instead of just trying to absorb it intuitively. the 10 hours spent on learning some facts will pay dividends in the hundreds of hours that should be spent practicing and observing
>>4483701
yeah, i often did light construction with pen. the goal of using pen in my case was to 1. stop erasing 2. visualize how the line will change the drawing before putting it down. speed and accuracy definitely came over time, but the important thing is that it's less prone to the overworking and fussing around i did with a pencil/digital. on bad copies, i made a hard to rule to just move on after my 3rd attempt

Look at references when youre not 100% sure of how to draw something. Most of this picture looks like you drew what you think something looks like rather than a stylized version of what it actually does.
The shirt and socks look like theyre painted directly onto the body. The skirt looks like you took the same pleat and repeated it over and over, and it makes it look like a bunch of jagged objects pinned together. Also, Im assuming shes slightly lifting her leg, so part of the skirt should be resting on the leg and not just shorter than the other side. I dont know why the right part is flared out like that. The skirt is almost knee length so gravity should be pulling it down more unless theres wind or motion which is hard to tell.
A hairbun isnt just a ball with a bunch of lines in it. That goes the same for hair, too. Dont draw each strand the exact same width. Add variation and stray hairs.
Draw hands. Draw the rest of the legs. Dont give me a fully body pose and then go and hide the feet. It looks odd. It doesnt help that you lifted the leg to make the pose look less stiff without changing anything else about it.

You have a vague idea of what things look like and where they go but you dont actually understand why theyre there.
Draw more from life, and look at how anime and manga stylize life. Use references for everything until you can draw it accurately from memory, and even then, keep looking at them.

Any tips on inking? The hair, clothes, and chair look like theyre made from the same material and blend into each other and im not sure how to fix that. Also, I tend to stick with 0.05 pens since everything else is harder for me to control, and its easier to control line width when i start from the smallest option. Copy-pasta of my original thread.

This might be useful for anyone needing a lot of references for Anime faces. I took a bunch of Anime renders from MGRenders and cropped it so I only saw the face. The crops aren't that great since this was something I did back when I wasn't that good; in my reference hoarding phase but I think it's still a lot better than searching for a new face every time you want to do a copy or something.

first time posting here. How good to you think Jojo is as study material?
anyways, I tried to copy Kira's pose the best I could. I can already see some issues, mostly with the head size.

JoJo is as good as anything else you like. If you love JoJo and want to draw in a style inspired by Araki, study JoJo.

Do you have a screen tablet? I don't care much about line economy when I'm just studying and it's almost impossible to make clean lines easily on the screenless tablet.

Mine is medium sized, but I find it extremely hard to do lineart on it.

I've been thinking about creating an /asg/ discord group for posting daily studies and being a bit more rigid against crabs and people who don't draw/are too negative. Would you guys be interested? I'd love to be able to see more of gmi-anon's work.

I was a long time ago, but most of the people there were crabs that didn't draw anything and just gave "crits" to others, I'd rather a group of like 5-10 anons that draw everyday and give positive/constructive feedback than a lot of people who do nothing but talk.

I'd be down to join. having a smaller group might help with accountability.
I might not really be in a position to give helpful feedback though, since I'm /beg/.

The image is horribly jpeg'd, so there's artifacts everywhere and the colors fucked.
