How do you Dads approach challenges?
Does anyone do any sneaky pre planning before hand (I won't tell), or use the challenge as an opportunity to study the topic material to then make your challenge piece?
Or are you a last minute, oh-fuck-I-forgot-this-was-happening kinda challenge goer, like myself?

Any recommendations, tips, etc to getting the most out of the challenges? They're great because they get you out of comfort zones you could otherwise idle in forever, but there's always more than that to get from them!

Depends on what you mean.
If you're talking about the period of time you're continuously putting down marks, and omitting all observation periods, finding references, asking for advice, reading materials, then 2 hours is quite a lot.
There are also some people with work schedules / jobs that make it hard to squeeze in 2 hours due to fatigue. Sure, you can just draw, but actively learning and drawing requires a lot of concentration and can be fairly taxing.
If you're NEET though, there's next to no excuse not to fit in 2 hours.

I was one of those people. I'd have to admit that watching tutorials ate up a lot of my time and I stay up until midnight until work at 7 in the morning. I'm not working at the moment though. I saved up my work money to draw for a few months without fatiguing.

It’s not really going crazy because appointments per se (although the increase of new patient/adoptions is CRAZY right now. We see like 5 puppies a day compared to maybe 1or 2on a usual day.) But because we are trying to limit contact with owners/other humans, are doing curbside appointments that take up much more time AND splitting shifts = less people on schedule.

It was a debate about giving criticism to those who don't want it, don't ask for it, or even have comments closed. I'll start. Something I quite liked were the tiny strips for pages that Sugar was posting back in December. I like these not just because they have a very wondrous feel but they also bring me back to being a child and reading these very stylized comic adventures for kids in this child's magazine my grandpa would buy for me.
Some feedback I'd give would be to try having a more concise story, and to to making a small complete work from start to finish that could be equivalent to a fairy tale you'd tell a kid as they're going to sleep.

Honestly, I feel like I haven't changed much as as an artist at all since I was a middle schooler. I draw the same subject matters, still have roughly the same style, I use the same mediums, and have the same goals. The only real difference is I draw more backgrounds, porn, and furries, and I think I got better.
Not that this is really a bad thing, it honestly makes me happy to think I'm drawing stuff my younger self would have enjoyed.

Haven't found the panel yet, will be asking some fellow daddos over the next several days whether they would be interested in taking part with the grading process.

I do, however, have some other news for the April Tier Tourney. Attached is a picture of what the current v0.1 Rubric looks like currently. I'll explain my reasoning for each category, but first we gotta talk how this will be used.

For each weekend, each participant creates their piece that they will be submitting for that weekends prompt. Each piece will be reviewed by (ideally) a panel of myself and 3 other lassos/daddos.

Each member of the panel will score the piece under the four categories from 0 - 5 and then compute the combined category score.

After all panel members have graded, each piece's combined category score from all 4 panelists will be averaged out for the overall score.

After all three weekends we can take the 3 overall scores and find the mean or median for each artist's tier ranking.

From here, we can go a couple of directions.
By taking median rather than mean we can snip off score outliers while also giving daddos breathing room in case they cannot do all 3 pieces but still want their close to accurate tier rank.

(E.g. I submit two pieces, both getting 15s. My 3rd piece is a 0 for no submission. Under a mean ranking, I would be a 10. Under a median I would be 15, a significant difference. Yenno?)

Or we could just take the mean of only those who submit all 3 pieces and call it a day. What's your guys thoughts?

In terms of the choice of categories, I decided that composition and design should be delineated from other Artistic Fundamentals.

Every piece should have some composition or design, but not every piece will involve color, or anatomy, or perspective.

Likewise, I felt that it is important each Daddo considers their materials and media for their pieces. If someone uses watercolor for the first time, it's not going to be graded too highly in that category. In terms of digital work, this is where rendering would come into play.

The creativity and originality category is by far the most subjective of the four, but it is also an important factor.

I feel this category scheme ensures that an artist's hollistic skill is considered and scored appropriately, not just nitpicking on stuff unorganized.

Considering that, I would say thinking you haven't change is not entirely correct. I mean, I'd say refinement is still a form of change. If anything it sounds good that you could have a good grasp of what's important for you and refine your understanding of it and why that's so.

I see, you definitely sound quite lost. To be fair I think it might be best for you to put a stop to it. Take a rest (like a small vacation without drawing anything) and slowly try to focus on the things that made you want to start drawing in the first place.
I know it sounds complicated and like a probable setback. But it might be better than have drawing stuff you don't like, eventually distance yourself fully from the activity.

I used to basically only draw dragons and pokemon. I was already doing both trad and digital since I was younger and kept that up, though I've switched primary digital programs quite a few times. I feel like I've diverged more and more into versatility instead of hunkering down and developing a specific style and I'm slowly starting to accept and embrace that. My interests were already varied, as well as the stuff I used to appreciate. I find myself more invested in western comics (particularly the french and old Italian masters) compared to manga which used to be my main inspo when I was younger. I'm starting to appreciate the old masters more and more as I learn more about painting. I'm less impressed by rendering than I used to be and am more attracted to a sense of motion and appealing proportions.

Bez puts together some really quality stuff. I'm quite an admirer of his use of light and brush work. This one's one of my favorites. The soft lights and small brush strokes give a very nice feel.
It's especially compelling how the use of these small brush strokes manage to bring some of the organic feel from traditional art to the digital space.

I feel like I just get it nowadays. Get what it takes to get good. I know what type of art I want to make. When I started I didn't know shit, I didn't even know what I didn't know. Now there's this tremendous belief in self to overcome. It's great. Not that I'm ever really satisfied with the final product, but the process is enjoyable and it feels like I'm always learning new things. Yesterday I learned a pencil technique that's been game changing for me in terms of finding gesture and getting a more natural, loose feeling in the drawing.

I thought it was going to be a case of not recognizing good design among simplistic/messy technique, but no, I think I would agree that the work is lower level (no offense Lafayette_Tiki).
I think you can identify what is appealing about it to you. But in my experience, "quality" of technique is usually not very high priority for me in regard to finding things appealing or interesting.
As for coom ideas in general, just try to consider what you find hot, what you don't see often enough, or something specific you would want to know how to depict. Something you would want to explore. Surely you have certain preferences. Perhaps some kind of pressure or restriction upon yourself is weighing down your mind and not allowing your ideas to surface?

man, so many changes. I got into DAD because I was a sad depressed man trying to fix his shit.
I drew maybe twice a year at most, yet longed to be an artist and do nothing but art.
Now I have a streak I've not dropped since I started Dad, so i'm in the top 10. I draw for at bare minimum 2 hours a day, compared to when I first began Dad 30 minute gestures were a slog. Most days I draw all day just on/off inbetween things & could probably tally it to 5/6 hours. In relation to the last two sentences, I think because I have gotten a bit better, it's far more enjoyable & I'm able to spend longer doing art -- I still beat myself up, but being able to draw a figure and have it look reasonably OK is a ton better than the pure beg drawings that made me angry and frustrated to begin with.
I moved from trad to digital, part of the kick in the ass to get me doing Dad - use the investment I spent money on. I am dipping my toes in colour and painting, it still scares the heck outta me, but before I painting like a kindergartener & now I understand a bit more & can have a lot more fun with it (as opposed to hating myself some more).
I've also made lots of friends && took the step to put my crap online in social media for future use. I could keep going, like don't get me started on the routines I've managed to create because of this, but Dad's been a pretty big part of my life & I am happy I joined.

Sounds like my experience so far too, anon, except I wasn't really beg when I started. Before I joined dad I was super inconsistent, meeting and making actual art friends with similar goals helped me immensely, as well as being able to see my day-to-day growth.
