Strive for quantity AND quality.

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.

Do dynamic sketching exercises, they help increase draftsmanship A LOT.

Lines, circles, ellipses, curves... even grandpa vilppu recommends doing them for flowy, gestural and confident lines.

If you haven't done yet, go through dynamic sketching with Peter Han while also sketching anime on the side, I guarantee you'll see major improvements.

study fundies, copy works from artists you like and apply what you have learned in your original works. If I were you I would start with a figure drawing like Vilppu course and perspective lessons

nice job anon, keep it up! the copy doesn't need to be exactly the same,

as a tip... everytime you get to make a copy, try setting a goal.

what do you want to learn from this? maybe even write your goal. then at the end see if you could achieve your goal.

for example, "I want to learn to use colors like this!", then you copy, study the colors, maybe try applying those colors to another quick sketch. see what I'm saying?

copying by itself is a great way to get mileage, but if you copy with an intent you'll get much more from it, in my opinion.

idk why people are seething hard with you
but I will give some suggestions if you want to continue this drawing

>neck
the neck is misaligned with the torso, you can see that because the chin is not in the same line with the pit of the neck. Also,
the neck doesn't narrow at the top
and actually in the profile view it's wider in top than it's in bottom. If you tried to represent the trapezius, it comes from behind the neck so it not influences the diameter.
I saw that you tried to do the sternocleidomastoid, this is a muscle that comes from behind the ears and must be connected to the collarbones in the pit of the neck

>torso
the clavicle starts at the pit of the neck and connects at the scapula, where one third of the length of them connect to the deltoid and trapezius
there is practically no space separating the ribcage and the pelvis, you can see this because the butt starts right after the ribs, without having the external oblique between them
the arms are very small compared to the rest of the body
the deltoid has 3 sections but you would only see 2 in the front view, it is invading the pectoralis in the chest and that would only happen on the arm

>legs
the thigh is too long compared to the lower leg
the knees are rounder inside due to tendons and bone structure and straight outside
the feet are small
the ankle bone is high inside than outside, the opposite for the calf

I recommend looking for a figure drawing course to learn basic proportions and landmarks, so you don't make mistakes like the ribcage so close to the pelvis, you can find some on the course thread as I said two post above

copying has a bad fame, but it's great for learning, the masters always had a tradition of doing master studies for a reason.

also in music for example, nobody would say that there's no merit in playing songs made by your inspirations, it makes no sense, but if you're copying, copying with intent is always better than without it :D

same way you improve at anything. practice it in total, and isolate the parts giving you trouble for individual practice. if you find yourself fudging ears with random semi-circles, then do studies of ears from different angles, then try just the ear from memory.
of course, ears are a minor detail unless you're a complete deviant, but it applies to the big picture stuff too, like abstracting everything down to basic geometric shapes to work on proportions and poses/perspective.

whats the process you use for copying? and for drawing from imagination? try using the same construction process and you'll have an easier time.

also if you don't have a pose in mind, it's not cheating to look for references in pinterest or stuff, just find some rl photographs with poses you like, draw them in your style and change what you want to make it yours.

this isn't 100% from imagination but trust me, I'd wager not even 1% of the art you like is. this process is also advocated by good artists like canking and there are some books about studying anime from rl photographs, all you got to do is stylize the head and you get anime, basically.

so drawing anime basically sums up to knowing good figure drawing, draftsmanship and copying the stylization of artists you like until you develop your own.

When i copy i don't construct i just look really close at how they drew and i do the same thing. I kinda just try and look at the picture as if it's just a bunch of lines, then i draw those lines and it looks the same.

>> No.4475188

Construction is just shorthand for thinking about the form when you draw. If you mindlessly copy and don't know what the line represents, then you will only be able to reproduce the same image fro memory. If you don't think about the form (or any other relevant aspect you're trying to learn) you will not be able to apply what you learned from copying in another situation, like a different angle or pose.

Aside from blonde hair not actually being yellow, don't use HSV and move the value/brightness slider down for darker colors. Darker yellows end up being just mud/puke looking. You got the skin looking pretty good which is usually hard.

It depends on the color cast of the scene/background and usually ends up with the blonde being much more desaturated and the shadows end up being slightly more saturated greens or the blonde is more yellow-red/orange like a #E2B772 for example. Look at anime swatches or copic marker swatches for a better idea.

I selected the hair and did a color balance towards magenta and red (+23 red, -61 green) for the part on the left. I find it hard to work with lemon yellows in digital unless my color palette is picked out completely before I start or I color adjust to get there towards the end/touching up.

small shape/line suggestions. not sure what age but you gave her plump legs and so i made her a little more petite/younger.

i draw a lot with pen too, sometimes you're better off not even bothering to try restating a line. it just turns into a gob of ink and is uglier than leaving it alone. or make sure to draw very, very, lightly.

forgot to say, the arms look a bit flat because there's no overlap. try not to ever do this, you need some type of form going over another form to give the illusion of depth. small T lines can help show that. so change up angles/poses a bit to give the drawing more life.

I'm still making refinements to my method but now I think I got something that works well.

>find a picture to learn from
>draw it in pencil focusing on the construction, using vilppu's method or purely geometrical forms in 3d space
>copy it 1:1 directly with ink
>draw it from memory directly with ink

It takes about 10-15min for these 3 drawings, but I think I'm learning much more with this than just purely copying. Also some constructions in 3d form were pretty confusing at first, like pic related.
