>How does fashion illustration work? I find it interesting but I can't draw for shit. To my surprise a lot of designers rely heavily on templates. Is it just a matter of elaborately dressing up pre-drawn figures?
You're confusing two similar disciplines. Fashion designers use templates, because they're focused only on the clothes. Fashion illustrators focus on the figure as well as the clothes. To put it another way, fashion designers are mainly concerned with the way clothes look, while fashion illustrators are interested in giving the clothes life.

The biggest problem is the butt crack? There are bigger problems with the anatomy besides the butt crack. The arms have no internal structure, like underinflated balloons. The right arm looks to be folded a complete 180°. The neck is covered in complete shadow, a sign that anon couldn't figure out how the head connected to the torso. The hair should still be obscuring our view of the body unless the head is whipping back to look at the viewer, in which case there should be more motion to the hair. Where is the vagina? It should be visible from this low angle. Then you address the butt crack. These are just the problems with the anatomy.

Before you redraw the picture, try drawing the picture from a standard eye level. Work out the pose before trying to "foreshorten" the drawing.

Except the two most glaring issues you pointed out focused on the ass when there were more fundamental errors being made. You say you don't want to encourage people to turd polish when that's exactly what you were doing by making anon believe they could make one or two fixes and everything would be good. The biggest problem anon has is that they completely lack the ability to be self-critical, so they post asking for critiques, then ignore those critiques to repeat the same mistakes.

I get it. You got caught thinking like a coomer and got btfo'd. I would be embarassed, too. The fact is that anon wanted critiques. That's why they posted to /ic/. It's not like I stumbled across their DA gallery. My critiques of the anatomy are valid and were made to make anon a better artist. Your butt-focused comments were also helpful, I'm sure.

I'm sssstarting to get the hang of gestures more. I'm really enjoying not working so I can focus on drawing a lot, to an autistic degree. If the world stays where it is now, and shit doesn't hit the fan, I'm okay with continuing to iron shit out.

Still some sloppy lines and chicken scratch, and proportions are dumb for being gesture lines, but I am feeling the improvement. I feel good!

Basically, the circle represents what you actually see with your eyes simulated on paper. Everything in that cone will be normal proportions. Going closer and beyond will start to distort objects. Placing vanishing points beyond your Picture Plane (bold black rectangle) will make things look natural. At least one VP needs to be out of bound of your picture. If they are both in, it'll make a wide angle, fish eye effect.
Also, here's what lines to draw in your planes to help you make accurate ellipsis. Note the diagonal in the corer of the little square. The circle is always close, but not touching it, that should guide your line. Read/watch a tutorial on how to draw ellipsis on plane in perspective tho, there are some tricks to it.

>> No.4459457

>>4459424
I didn't understand what you're asking but you're using the ellipses wrongly. When the ellipse is a circle with foreshortening, the short axis of the ellipse intersects with a vanishing point. There is no reason to draw random ellipses around the picture inside boxes(if this is not a specific exercise that I don't know about that is).

The gesture is stiff and unnatural though, rigid proportion isn't as important as you think it comes with practice to properly proportion rather than measurement. That's exactly how Michael Hampton would teach it and similarily with vilppu. But gesture is way more important and if you can't see that yours is fucked idk what else to tell you. If you go to the video course thread you can watch the Michael Hampton figure drawing class where he goes over da Vincis drawings with gesture and explains the way it's exaggerated and the axes of the main forms. Is painting via opacity/tranparency/erasure a legit technique? By that I mean I start off with a flat highlight layer. I then mask it with a shadow layer on top. The process involves erasing parts of the shadow layer where I think light hits, which then reveals the light layer underneath it. Darker values are obtained not by colorpicking a darker value, but via opacity (repeated brush strokes over one area until desired value is obtained.) It takes a long time, but it's more intuitive for me than the usual block-in method, and it feels like I can control the edges better. The main 'brush' here are hard and soft erasers. The only limitations I see are low contrast references.

On the other hand, I made this using the standard block in method. It ended up muddy and I had a hard time controlling and blending edges. The round brush doesn't behave the way I want it to, as opposed to the erasers.

>> No.4461026

>>4461005
Nice, your practice is paying off. Red line is right. Since it's 1 point perspective and that plane is always facing use, and it's a square, the ellipse in it is always a true circle. Technically you don't need to think about cylinder axes in one point, since everything goes into view point or perpendicular, but it's a good practice to check yourself.

it's ok to trace a couple of times, for confidence, but by this you are only learning this specific shape in the specific position. For practice it's great to do draw-a-box beginner exercises, they'll help you build line confidence. Right now you are struggling with drawing lines in general on top of perspective challenges, solving two problems at once is harder then doing each one separately. Keep doing perspective, but also do line training as a different exercise. It's annoying, but faster and less painful in the end.

Don’t do this. Have a loosely written plan of attack, but instead of mapping out working on a monthly basis work on a weekly basis. Give yourself weekly assignments based on what you wish to improve and commit to 30 minutes a day to start. Always start slow and work your way up. It takes time to work up to working 8 hours a day consistently, if you try out the bat you’re going to burn yourself out. Also make incentives for when you complete work for a week. Slow and steady wins the race always mate.

That depends on your level of commitment and what you are willing to sacrifice. Great artists all have a couple of things in common, they study from previous great artists, they are deliberate on their practice of what they want to make, and they don’t give up easily. You have to grit out the next couple of years of toil and strife. This is usually where most people quit, because they aren’t painting like Anders zorn or drawing like Kim jung Gi.

First thing: you aren’t as good as you think, and you aren’t so bad that you can’t get better. As long as you understand these two concepts, you can make it as a professional. You have to have the humility to ask for advice and if it makes sense to you use it. You have to be willing to make bad art while you figure out how to make great art. Be willing to take the criticism that your work sucks and try to listen to why it sucks to make yourself better. Most of all, practice a shitton. Practice more than anyone else.

Well, give up. Do something else.

Do you really believe you’ll become an amazing artist after making a couple of half hearted paintings? Assuming that is stepping on the millions of professional artists who worked tirelessly for years to achieve the level of skill they have. First off, get over yourself. Everyone that has ever picked up a paintbrush has been at your place at least once. Second thing: you WILL get better. Not that it’s possible, but you WILL get better just so long as you keep going.

Anon, I’ve been in your same boat. I was frustrated for years because my art wasn’t where I thought it should be. But I didn’t quit, and neither should you. Now stop whining and get to work.
