It's true that you should learn the subject (maker of this guide didn't though, those redlines are embarrassing), but starting with and relying heavily on a reference is perfectly fine. Just don't copy it 1:1 like a shitty hack, interpret it instead, change parts of it if you like. They're right about that part at least. Do anything that gets you the drawing.

I have serious doubts anybody was helped by this, but I'm sure plenty think they were. It's plain bad, unrealistic advice, basically telling you to cut out one of many good methods for producing an image. The only part that's good is the part about collecting multiple images and studying them. Yes, do that. Learn the subject. If I were crabbing, I wouldn't admit it has good points. You just think because it's official-looking and has been shared a lot, it's automatically good, which makes you gullible. The result is the result. Copyhacks will be copyhacks, and artists who learn their subject through and through and then apply knowledge to good reference, like Rockwell, will make the truly great stuff. Pic related is far more realistic take on the process of using and interpreting reference. This artist is a pro, but the idea is the same, the ratios are just different. As a /beg/ you may have to focus more on study, but this idea that it's wrong to start with a good reference will eventually just hold you back. It's just one method. There are others. Do what it takes for the drawing.

This is literally how art has been done for hundreds of years. Leonardo and Michelangelo would do the same fucking thing. First you do the gesture / composition, then you do the basic drawing, then you get someone to pose for you for some of the details. It takes fucking skill to make it all come together properly you try it stupid crab I bet you can't even get his abs right.
