IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it.

The pelvis area is a disaster and I have no idea how to fix it, I guess lower body construction is the next thing to work on. Other proportions are also off, turns out that "sounds easy, I'll just eyeball it" is not a good approach when the last time you've drawn was twenty years ago.

Is picking up painting a good idea without a solid grasp of anatomy, or should I go back to the Loomis mines? Is there a recommended tutorial for the semi-realistic painting style Western smut artists use nowadays?

i think you should do something not just out of your comfort zone because that implies difficult, but something you dont usually do. recently for some reason started doing geometric shit and focussing on perspective, moving from 2 and 3 up to 4 and 5 point perspective. and i started doing keltic knots and then instead of making them into a square i wanted to see if i could put them on a cube, which i can, and then putting those cubes into 5 point perspective, it feels way more technical and zen like than creative. drawing people is super hard for me, drawing cars is very easy. this is just technique building. its not hard, its just building up techniques to use later. things i wouldnt have even thought of doing 6 weeks ago, not because its too hard but because i never thought of it and wouldnt have known how. do something like that if youre feeling stagnant.. i dont need references for this, just time.

I answered last thread, there's a story that Frazetta copied all of Constructive Anatomy in one evening. Which is a bit hard to believe, but, maybe...
I basically just started doing this on a whim. I think I've been trying to draw too much from imagination lately and I've been neglecting the equally important need to draw from life and other artists so I figured this would be a way of giving structure to my copying. I like Bridgman's drawings, he shows you how to think in terms of forms and give a needed "punch" to the figure.

Then find refs! Also do those poses yourself and figure out if its even possible/how you would balance in the pose.
For the sitting one, it was hard to find a decent ref because of how stiff the her upper body is, it takes some support to balance like that.

For the foreshortening I recommend drawing contours around the form to get a better feel for the direction of the body parts.

I tried.
I can see how going fast can actually force you to think more about the object and how it's constructed, rather than just copying the lines. If you're not giving yourself time to look at each line and get it accurate, then your knowledge of the object takes over for you (combined with the reference you're seeing of course).

Someone recommended me to try perspective and practice it .What do you think? will post refs if any one is interested in them.

>> No.4401199

>>4401033
Hey man I'm working on my values as well so take what I say more as the opinion of someone tring to figure things out too.

I assume that's supposed to be a study of the girl with a pearl earring, looks a bit like the monkey-jesus restoration, no offence.
The first thing would be to make sure that the underlying measurements go roughly in the right ballpark, if you can't do that you need to improve your drawing ability first.
Secondly identify proper shapes of value and fill them with a flat value, your values though loosely grouped have too much variation for this stage and the shape isn't clearly defined.
It looks like you're feeling your way through it instead of analysing what you're drawing.
Once you have those flat values you can harden and soften edges where appropriate and start working on variation within the value-groups.

If you're looking for resources I'd recommend marco bucci's and moderndayjames's youtube channels and ctrl+paint.

the kindred one is soulless. you are worrying wayyy to much on making it "right" makes it rigid and soulless.

The other one looks nice from afar. but zoomed in it looks meh. but thats a good sign. unless you traced it? I think work on making deliberate lines. and if you gonna cross hatch make sure you do it along the contour of the form to give it volume. do that and post again.

I like your minimalistic approach on the hair and face. Your proportions are way too out of wack though and makes her look janky. i know what you were going for but the way you have the legs drawn is how'd it look if she was sitting on a box and her feet were hitting the floor

to get the pose you'd want it'd take drastic changes in the leg positions. also i'd recommend turning her a bit so you can show more clearly the pose you want otherwise the perspective will be challenging af and even if done right wont look good. but your frog girl is cute. and her toe/feet position is cuteeee. sorry i like cute shit ><

alright im gonna be the biggest bully because i feel like it right now, what do you EXACTLY want to do? what emotion do you wish to evoke upon the viewer? is it just a way to express an urge you may have had at that point? that is important because most of the direction that an image takes while being created rests upon such desire. Now let me tell you what I think is wrong mainly with your picture; At a first glance I see that the balance and weight are not evenly distributed. To get an idea what I mean, take as reference these videos of kindred's animations (more specifically, the walk cycles) along how a sheep and a horse move

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yds9dOxZKPk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oMJCbbyiXE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y07x46rKP0

Look and study the spring action that occurs at the instant kindred lands on her foot to get an idea of the balance you're seeking. Her legs are also more apart because of how easier it is to balance like that, take a look at the arrow shooting animation and try to replicate it yourself to see how it feels. That's it for now, I usually don't frequent these threads but seeing kindred made me want to jump in. Good luck and hope this helps.

love the upper body, pose and armor is gud.

There are some awkward tangents on the legs, and you are missing a joint at the hoof.

The upper/lower leg mainly rotate around the FE axis. Her knees may be wide apart, but since the next leg part comes backwards, the hocks should be closer together.

She feels a little off balance, like she'd tip forward.
