Is this a good digital art program? Is digital art doable on Linux without Photoshop or SAI?

GIMP is garbage for drawing, using Krita.

FPBP. Krita isn’t just better than GIMP (talk about your low bars to clear), it’s competitive with things like Sai and Clip Studio Paint.

Yeah, I almost started writing a post about how Krita is way better than Sai, but then realized it's just bait.

For me its Paintstorm for painting and line work. Gimp for photo editing. Super comfy ngl. I got to use both on some paid gigs for sequential. It's not the greatest but it gets the job done. Biggest hurdle is learning gimp. Got rid of all default shortcuts and keybind just the stuff that I use.

Never personally liked the line tools. Blur tool is a bit crap too. People usually use Krita if they are looking for free. Paint tool SAI and Clip studio were my choice of art programs.

I'm currently with a cold in bed, this is the best photo I can take. I think you can see which one it is.

Bought it on a clearance sale last Christmas for 250 euros. Works just fine with PS but Krita, I can't see the lines I'm drawing. Should I try to change anything with the pen pressure?

I can draw just fine on Photoshop, the lines are perfectly visible.

What infuriates me is that my old Wacom works perfectly fine with Krita, but the thing is broken now and I don't feel like replacing it it.

krita is the best option but it's still shit

there's a linux/macOS exclusive SAI clone called azpainter, but it doesn't scale well to 4k monitors so I can't use it

mypaint (the new version, 2.0. most distros, including arch linux, only offer the ancient 1.2) is also good for sketching and generally faster than krita despite being written in python, but it doesn't have a select/transform tool

I haven't tried the proprietary programs yet.

There's a ton of usable digital art programs on linux

>Krita
>Gimp (Gimp is surprising usable after installing the gimp paint studio present collection.)
>Azpainter if you want a native linux sai alternative
>Drawpile (Starting to get really popular lately for live drawing collaboration. Almost like a "modern" opencanvas 1.1 Plenty of windows users use it but easily installs fine on any linux distro with flatpak)
https://flathub.org/apps/details/net.drawpile.drawpile..
>Blender for 3d rendering

ALSO YOU CAN RUN SAI2 on LINUX WITH PEN PRESSURE WITH the latest WINE 5.0!!! No extra configuration or setup necessary.

Here's a video that shows this

https://youtu.be/3nnTY8ji7CM

>Install wine 5.0. If you use Ubuntu/mint you will have to install from the PPA.
>Download the latest pirated sai2 from this link
https://www.deviantart.com/bloosebi/art/PaintTool-SAI-v2-LATEST-795045662
>Run Sai2.exe from the folder

>>4375337
I think that's why I still see a lot of artists that like to use Sai or Photoshop in their workflow in addition to CSP. Sai/Photoshop/Krita always feel smoother painting on my computer compared to CSP.

The screen tearing is probably because CSP doesn't have GPU acceleration yet

Huh that's cool but beware that file recovery doesn't work when sai crashes according to https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=38712, that's a pretty important thing to note.

GIMP is a better photo editing and graphic design program than a drawing program. You'll wanna use something like Krita for drawing or just pirate a paid program.

The parka blogs guy who used the same tablet in this review said tilt and pen pressure works for in Krtia too. Maybe try switching between wintab or windows ink in tablet settings and see if either one works.

been using SAI2 on linux for a few weeks with a Huion H950P tablet and it works pretty much perfect.
also this method works with clip studio paint but the internet connection doesn't work so you have to install an older version first, register your license manually, THEN uninstall and install the newest version.
it's an absolute fucking mess, but after that it's basically smooth sailing.
