IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

i've mostly drawn flat value weeb shit my whole life, so getting into (digital) painting is a massive learning curve for me.
can anyone offer critique for where i am currently with this piece? it's obviously very rough, but what elements can i bring to improve my overall values?
i know adding leaves to the trees will help a lot but i seem to have a hard time with them, so i'm holding out for now. if anyone has any useful tree painting tutorials, i would absolutely welcome that!

how to get better at 5 point perspective from imagination? particularly figures, but is there any theory or textbook on the topic in general? so far I've only seen a few pages on it in the books I've read with no real detail. Poor anatomy under clothing. Learn key anatomical landmarks that appear under clothes I,e. Knees, the tops of the pelvis, the ends of the shoulders, elbows. Clothing will bend around these landmarks, and otherwise it will hang and bunch up if pressed. Key problem in yours is the outside of the upper sleeve, that area experiences a lot of pull from elbow and shoulder and is thus usually smooth, and also the cuffs, they should hang off of the wrist with the outside edge fairly smooth and the inside fairly crumpled. Very shapeless shirt , shirts tend to pull away from the shoulders thus have a smoother chest area, esp on women, and then they are bundled into the pants, often spilling out noticeably

I've recently created this (mines on left, obviously). An artist I follow on twitter posted a cool image and i recreated it really well, but i still cant draw things that I want to draw myself, even with a reference.

Should i stop copying other artists' works and genuinely start grinding out gesture/figure drawing/form studies?

I'm also trying to get better at what I do. For me, I just look up tutorials on pinterest and youtube, If I want to understand for example light I look up tutorials and experiment until I feel like I learned something new. There are some good fabric study guides on pinterest.

I guess you could also do some texture exercises, where you draw a cube and then draw it 10 more times but in different textures.

you can do both. i think youre doing it wrong if youre only studying all the time. drawing should be fun too otherwise theres no point.

but holy shit that left leg is so fucked. its crazy that you could post a person with a calf and ankle like that and not be sure what the problem is.

im not trying to discourage you, im just saying, YES grind the fundamentals. You've got a very steep learning curve ahead of you.

but you're not hopeless. just by being here, being honest and modest, asking for help you must have some level of self awareness that you dont see with the autists on deviant art who never improve.

good luck anon. draw some boxes and cylinders and stuff.

Also how would I go about making finer detailed lines with shading? My finger smudges everything but I need something more thinner I guess.

The pose you have chosen is not great for a beginner honestly. You need to choose poses that show movement very obviously like pic related as an example.
Gesture line is not a contour line of body, its line of movement. Closest thing in body that comes to gesture line is the spine usually. Your lines are also way too stiff, just loosen up and dont be afraid of making mistake. line you first think will be mistake might be the best one

a lot of beginner mistakes here is why.

first of all, there should be no reason why the portion of geralts skin in direct light is such a dark grey. the local value of his skin should be much brighter.

In the figure the separation between light, midtone and shadow is unclear as they are too close to eachother in value. Geralts hair, which should have whitest values in the painting, are the same dark shades of grey as his skin. Everything is just the same, even the background, hence the muddiness.

Also the brush strokes are too small, hard and streaky for rendering skin. The right size brush is always the biggest one you can use without losing the detail you need for each specific area. Turn your opacity and flow down to 20-30% and build up the values and detail in multiple passes of light and shadow in layers. much more feasible for a beginner especially than drawing with thick opaque paint.

Have you watched the videos? No idea what it means by videos, but it tells you to do that as well. Also, if there's something specific you don't understand, just try some googling, and you might find someone else explaining it in a simpler way. You are meant to learn from these books, and if you're not learning, then what worth are they to you.

Having gone through the book myself recently and completed all of the exercises, I can tell you that it's not THAT important that you do and understand every single exercise in this book.
A lot of the stuff this book covers you will never ever use ever again after finishing the book.
Just do the stuff that you think is useful for the type of drawings you want to make.

It’s good to work standing up where possible. Drafting desks usually allow for standing, drawing on a surface bent towards you. You can also buy a tall stool if you need to sit down for a bit. Standing up enables you to make big motions with your hand because your elbow is free and off the desk

I copied the loomis head construction for a little bit and some of the hogarth heads too. I also just copied from comic and animation artists I like that already had a good foundation. So after a while you kind of just know where the major landmarks go. For this drawing I still had trouble and the one I posted was my third attempt, it wasn't until I had to mentally put loomis's head construction over the reference to get the proportions right, then it was just a matter of copying the details straight from the reference. since you don't have a teacher to irl show what you are doing wrong, try tracing to see where your mistakes are and adjust accordingly. Then try drawing it again just by looking at it. Keep doing that back and forth until you feel like you are good at it. Then the real test is to try drawing it with out looking at it, from memory. That is when you know you have improved

My problem is that I can't coordinate my eye to move along with my hand. I'm supposed to draw exactly what I'm seeing but I always end up relying on other types or observation (trying to look at the entire thing, looking at the paper) or guessing instead of literally drawing what I'm seeing. I can't even move my eye "slowly" along the edges of things, I just jump from one point to the other.

thats actually how everyone else does it. I don't know anyone who learned to draw by following their hand with their eye in perfect sync in order to copy something, at least for me and I have never seen instruction to do it that way. You just need to practice "eyeballing" it and tracing will help you realize where something is off so you can compensate when you go back to just looking at it. You just have to get a feel for it and that comes with practice.

Looks good. I would say use higher opacity brushes and try to really hit the right value and color. Should help with speed, keeping things simple, and prevent muddiness. Also, try switching to b&w every now and then to check overall values. It looks kind of flat right now...but I'm willing to bet that's the reference.

Noob here. But I still think I can elaborate on you question. I read once that artists study the tools of their craft so that when "inspiration" strikes they have the abilities necessary to make their idea a reality.d Check out this book "War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. Great book that helped me to fight procrastination and draw a bit more. which leads to your next point. Irritability/annoyance. I think it's cuz we don't have the skillset to draw the greatness we envision. It could be day or night. we'd put out the same shit. We just gotta practice more? I saw a suggestion once where you draw for 5-10 min. If you're not feeling it, stop. Otherwise continue and see where it goes. I draw like 4 days out of the week most times at the minimum (20 min/week) . I know it's not the leaps and bounds of training I need but I'll get there someday. my two cents. btw, here's a bit of my stuff.

There's no reason to critique your drawing. You're lacking in literally all areas possible. You don't have a basic grasp of any fundies. Don't get me wrong. That's how it's going to be for pretty much anyone once they're starting out. It's the fact that you admit to both not putting in any effort, and also somehow think you can get away with being trash because it's "style" that makes your work unworthy of critique. Before improving anything else, you should improve your attitude, or just quit right now.
