How do you really draw a face? Do you draw some sort of frame or reference lines and then add shading? Do you draw features like eyes and mouth then shade in the rest? How should I draw cheeks, for instance? Do I just shade in the white space?

People say to just draw a bunch of Loomis heads but I haven't really found it to be much helpful.

At this point, I'm honestly just thinking about replacing learning head drawing with just copying a bunch of anime faces since no one really teaches how to draw a face well.

Is Renaissance drawing completely lost, then?

I misread your comment.
Though I still don't exactly know what you mean by Ren drawing being lost. Are you saying that Loomis heads are RenShit or that if I should consider studying portraits from the RenAge?

I'm not sure what you should do. I was wondering if there were any way to learn to draw in the way the Renaissance artists did.

You were never learning and already copying in the first place.

you move on from symbol drawing to construction so that you can eventually go back to symbol drawing properly

eventually you should just be able to work off of a circle, a horizontal eyeline, and a vertical nose line

also abuse 3/4s and top-down perspective so you don't have to mirror the eyes

You have zero (0) fucking clue what drawing is about to begin with.
Shut the fuck up, fuck off, and study some goddamn fucking Loomis' Successful Drawing if you want to learn how to fucking draw.
"Wow this all is so obvious lol I know all the stuff in this book" is what a dumb fucking motherfucking cunt like you will say, but the truth is no. You know fuck all.

You are a beginner. You are ignorant. You know fuck all about anything regarding art. Read about some basic fucking constructive drawing principles. They've been developed since "renaissance" times and onwards but you don't even know what the fuck you're talking about when you say "Renaissance drawing" because you're just that goddamn ignorant. You don't know what you don't know.

Well, I can tell by looking that Renaissance drawing is visually different than contemporary drawing, Loomis' Successful Drawing, anime, or any other style. I'd just like to know how to practice one particular style over another.

You can't tell fuck all about anything because you're a blind ass beginner that is latching onto a couple aesthetic choices versus the fundamental drawing concepts that have a direct lineage to where drawing is now.

Learn the 3D Planes of the face OP

MIchael Hamptons Figure drawing booking does a good job in the later chapters breaking down the 3D planes/Structure of the head.

You will need to spam this+Perspective for a bit. Keep drawing until drawing 3d objects on 2D paper becomes more reasonable.

Do those #medsheads challenges. Drawing 100 faces.
There will be a pain period where your art will look like shit. Push through it.

If you just want to draw anime, look up Pin2D's videos on anatomy and hair, there they break up how to study anime heads from reference.

They use the Loomis method lmao, but I think they do a better job at explaining it.

How do I draw men's eyes? And overall male faces without making them look like old men?
