IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Her tits are so low, her hand is way too big, and she's not even 5 heads tall. That pose is fucked but I'm not even going to mess with that right now. Use visual measuring please and look at how many heads tall your people are and where landmarks fall on the body. At 2 heads is the nipple line. At 3 is the belly. At 4 is a little under the crotch. So on and so forth. For some reason the navel and the elbow line up but nothing else in her body does. Please fix this, I can't look at it.

I took a drawing class at the local community college and this was one of the assignments.
It won an award from the art show (1st place among Drawing I students)
Should I let it go to my head or was the competition probably just bad? There were other, much better pieces there but there were Drawing II students and others folks just auditing the class who submitted work.

I want to understand and develop a generalized skill of drawing any object.
I mean, there are situations where you would want to some object rotated 45 degrees upwards, such as a helicopter for example. And a head is also just an object made of planes or primitives. Yet the loomis head method breaks down in such situations. Which means that the method is not universal, but also a collection of (advanced) symbols.

Hey anon, you're doing a bit better again, im glad you stopped scratching. Now i think its good time for you to learn about line weight importance. You probably notice that in the upper left drawing the contour of their head is thicker than the rest of drawing, and in other drawings its the opposite. But in all cases it's random - there's no logical reason behind the weight of any line you used. Controling lineweight adds a TON of character, dynamism and crucial information to your lineart. I recommend watching this video by Feng, it's long but it only contains quality knowledge necessary for all beginners so you wont regret it. I think he speaks about lineweight at about 3/4 but Im not sure I remember correctly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22XYoenU-0c

Watch it for explanation and all practical tips. The most basic/common rules are:
- the outline is thicker than details "inside"
- what's closer to us is thicker (so we're starting to think about perspective a bit)
- whenever lots of lines are intersecting, that place will also be thicker
- cast shadow - thickest lines
- places lit by intense light - thin lines
- most extreme part of the curve is usually thicker

important: I know that the cartoon you're referencing and most cartoons in general don't have varying line weight, but its really really crucial to understand these aspects, you will stop making the lines randomly thicker and do everything consciously and with purpose if you study this subject. Once you understand the drill you can come back to whatever style you're emulating.

This is the first sketch I've ever done as I try and follow a series of guides to make my drawing from absolute shit to just shit.

Already I can tell the following:

First major problem; the street was too wide or the buildings were too small
Second, perspective on the right is utterly fucked and I needed to judge the space of buildings better.
Third, proportion of bricks and texture, as well as perspective.
Fourth, the scale of the various buildings in relation to each other.

Everything is awful as well but those are the glaring issues.

This is not as bad as you think, don't be so hard on yourself you're learning.
It seems like all your effort went on the left side of the paper and you got tired out by the time you moved to the right side of the drawing. Your issues with this piece will go away with more experience. Keep drawing, be mindful of your lines (you will not need to focus so much on them as time goes on). This is a good first step. Also, try to think more about composition, just cropping your drawing makes it much more interesting imo. Find something interesting about your subject and make it the focus of the drawing. Use reference but don't copy your subject, observe it. Use that information to make a drawing, otherwise your just copying a photograph. Other anons suggested fixing it, I wouldn't bother move on, do something similar or entirely new.

Also, is this with pen? Your lines are quite dark.

Not only is it with pen, it's with an awful biro that kept needing to be scratched to get the ink flowing again as you can see above. So better tools is another thing I need to get.

Certainly true about being tired. I've moved onto some other exercises and attempted to construct some figures from shape and my wrist feels week now. You're quite right as well as I started on the left half and that side of the street was much more involved. The road was drawn first but the focus on detail on the left led me misjudge the proprotions of the buildings due to working on the perspective (which was the main subject of the exercise, ie draw a street). The bad windows on the right were the last thing I did, and that does show as you pointed out.

I will return to the sketch, althoguh rather than fix, I'll start afresh, as the photo I'm working from is a perfect exercise on perspective due to the angle and the lines and the materials within. And perhaps after doing some more exercises.

Tools are very important, you want something your are comfortable using. I recommend a fine liner or a gel pen. I have a bias towards Pilot pens, but I can say fairly their razor point pens are pretty good for the price. And one last piece of advice. It's fine if want to return to the same subject, but if you are feeling worn out you need to do something else before you will return to it. Take breaks avoid burn out. I am saying all this because you seemed really down on your self and you yourself said you got worn out with the drawing. I really would recommend coming back to this subject after doing at least one different drawing.

For sure. Not to knock ball points. You can get some really good value with them (almost like a pencil). But fine liners tend to be more controllable. Problem happens when you try to render anime face like it's real face, it just doesn't look right anymore because proportions are all around the place.

I know you can render anime faces nicely (chinks love that shit) but it's probably better to still learn a more classical way of constructing the head if your goal is somewhat realistic anime faces.

Stress the "tension" points on the clothing more - so the area around her arm for example, you should add way more stretching marks there. Apart from that it looks good, not sure what more i can say at this stage. Shorten the elbow, it's way to long. The head is a bit too small, i see you have a tendency for that. Its great that you're drawing without a ref. Post it again when you draw the hair, face hands etc, i like your sketches. It’s obvious that you don’t actually produce art or you’d understand that literally every artist uses refs at one point or another. It’s fucking stupid to propagate “no refs” as though that’s an important/good distinction because it makes using refs seem ‘bad.’ When it isn’t. Because EVERYONE USES REFS.

Noted the elbow and head. Regarding the dress, I noticed that I treat some parts of it stiff as a toga and others soft as silk, I think that's why some area's are stiffer and lack creases/stretching, still very new to drapery so I'm just winging it at this point.
I still have no clue how to draw feet hands and hair, along with shading and coloring. I'll need to practice those much more before I'm confident enough to post.

What are you guys even arguing about? Both are important for different reasons. It's obvious that you first need to observe something to draw it. Then after enough observation you can do it from memory. You can't have one without the other. The end goal imo is to be able to draw from memory and accurately observe (not copy) a subject. You need to do both at together, you can't only use reference for x amount of time then go by imagination or vice versa.

I didn't say you will be able to draw it accurately, but that you can tell when it's wrong. The way I see it is the reference study is the homework and the imagination drawing is the test. The test shows where your gaps in knowledge are so you go back and do more study to fill in those gaps.

Triangulation using the canvas itself, which puts down the initial lines and points that indicate the larger relationships and proportions of your reference, which should further inform your sketch/construction/more measurements. Copying a reference is about copying relationships, and angles are generally easier to capture correctly than trying to transfer horizontal/vertical measurements.

This does require the canvas itself be a good replica of your reference canvas. You can do this manually by getting the angle of the diagonal first, then drawing the canvas box to fit.

Ok guys. This is my last drawing for the year, also marking one year since I started to learn drawing and joined /beg/.
I tried to make Krampus as cute as possible, she's carrying a bag full of (dead) naughty people on her back. Merry Christmas anon! Left is super creative and interesting. Right is clearly a study. I'm going to try and critique in the most useful way, please tell me if it is or is not helpful.
Critique for left:
-Work on line confidence. Check out dynamic sketching on YouTube by peter Han and do those exercises in your free time.
- You need to work on your anatomy. I think you know this. I would recommend studying and in a month, call it January 25th, redo it after studying to see if you've improved. Remember, "Finished, not perfect."
- Work on drawing hands, they're hard and they suck.
- Check out how muscles look under the skin.
How to study:
- Do the Peter Han home work at least 3 times
- Do at least 4-5 skulls from the front
- Do at least 4-5 eyes from the front
- Just Grind hands, do as many as possible
- Finally around January 20th start again and see how you improved. Also don't use lined paper lol. Hope that helped

Hey, me again! Time to critique the right:
- Honestly it's hard to critique without seeing the original thing.
- Work on line confidence.
- Isolate your light source
- Practice shading techniques
- Fix symbol drawing. Symbol drawing is drawing what your mind sees and not what you actually see. Check the sticky in the beg threads.
The Good:
- You are actually fucking with colour. Colour scares people and although there isn't much, it is good to see you adding some.
- It appears you are at least attempting scale, good. Keep doing that. See how to fix symbol drawing
How to study:
- Line confidence from before
- Practice killing symbol drawing. Drawing from life is good, keep doing, read parts of Keys to Drawing. Do the crossed foot exercise at least twice.
- Do several pages of blending. Just make a gradient with a pencil and see how many shades you can make it.
- Do several pages of blending with colour.
Finally, have fun and don't get burned out. Draw what is fun to draw even if it sucks. Take breaks and draw cartoons sometimes. Drawing AC/DC big balls concert was super fun for me. Hope this one helps too.
