4228089 No.4228089 [Reply] [Original]

What should I be studying if pic related is the kind of skill level I want to achieve? I don't want to be a human photocopier, I don't want to draw "from life", I don't want to make money from art. I just want to get good enough to draw kawaii anime girls for my own enjoyment.

Well I've been studying anime and trying to copy images I like for over 10 years and I still suck really bad. Here is an example. Everything is wrong with it, and I can't draw bodies or hands so I just end up always drawing heads. Literally over 10 years of trying and I haven't improved very much at all. It's very upsetting and demoralizing.

Lies. There is no way you'd draw the eyes like this if you studied hundreds of animay drawgings. Unironicly some loomis would really help you btw.
Bodies are irrelevant for what OP asked so that doesn't matter.

>> No.4228109

>>4228096
You need to practice some real life head construction then adjust it to the style you want. No need to go hard on photo realistic rendering or anything. Just the basics, because you don't even have those.

For example, in the drawing you posted, the head shape on the top (our) right is fucked, her eyes are misaligned and not even angled correctly, the eye brows are all over the place, her neck is sticking out of the wrong place.

You unironically need to learn some fundamentals.

> I can't draw bodies or hands

Again, learn how realistic bodies and hands are constructed, then adjust for the style you want.

That's how you become a (bad) human photocopier. Fundies are there to help with drawing from imagination by giving logic to why things are shaped the way they are. If you ever decide to get better and draw your moe if a different pose, angle, or perspective, you're gonna have a hard time without fundies.

At the bare minimum, work on perspective, form, and go from there

Have you ever done copies of photos/real life? I found copying anime a lot harder than real life stuff because of all the empty space within the characters. How long did it take you to draw these? Lack of patience is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to copies.

The point was that I wasn't thinking about the fundamentals when I drew this, I was blatantly copying thinking that "after 1,000 hours of copying, THEN I'll be good."

Which is a bunch of bullshit. You HAVE to learn the fundamentals and that means construction and form and perspective and all that other crap.

I don't care how much Proko says that copying is good, I still think he's full of shit. Robert Beverly Hale said that if you can't draw a hand from imagination then you CAN'T draw a hand EVEN if it's in front of you.

Learn to draw from imagination. If you can't draw from imagination, you can't really draw at all.

lol. You're basically peddling a superstition about how great "fundies" are. Most people make better anime head copies in the first couple months than this guy made in 10 years, even with no "fundies" to speak of. Clearly if this guy started studying fundies he'd just go from making bad copies of anime heads to bad copies of Loomis heads.

That's assuming that doing copies is actually a good thing when it's not. And also assuming that this guy didn't just draw for 2 minutes every other day for 10 years which makes the "I have been drawing for X years" arbitrary.

The problem is that he hasn't bothered to study the fundamentals and instead just grinds copies. It took me 250-300 hours of copies to realize that doing copies (even if it was from life) is not going to make you good at drawing. Do you really think that this guy actually spent 3 to 6 hours everyday for 10 years and is still at that level--that's literally impossible unless you have a major illness.

Robert Beverly Hale says that you NEVER copy the model, you study it.

QUOTE: These drawings also present another stunning surprise to the beginner: the discovery that the artist does not draw what he sees. When one of Whistler’s students said, “I like to draw what I see!” the artist answered, “Wait ’til you see what you draw!”

QUOTE: I am trying to impress upon you the fact that you can never draw the model with real skill – with anything approaching the skill of the artists in this book – unless you can create figure drawings out of your imagination.

QUOTE: The professional artist largely determines his tones of light and shade not by copying from the model, but by visualizing his model in terms of simple masses, and by lighting these masses in his mind. The tones he sees in his mind’s eye greatly influence the tones in his drawing.

Honestly, just read the damn book. I ignored everyone's advice and spent months doing just copies to realize that they were right. You have to study the fundamentals.

Anime isn't like 3d. That's why you have games like fighterz where they have to distort the 3d models so that they will look like the 2d drawings otherwise what you end up with looks like toy story. Anime perspective is usually exaggerated. And you can see the right side of the face even though you're looking at the left and that shouldn't be possible.

That you're worried at all is a good first sign. This happens when you have no self-reflection and interest in pushing yourself. At some point you'd notice that you're not progressing how you'd like and naturally would want to seek the solution.

>> No.4233328

i think you mean figurines. they dont look like the cartoons. thats how that works. when these cartoons were designed they weren't using 3d models to make sure their drawings were perfectly consistent from every angle. the character is a slightly different shape from the front than it is from the side. they have imperfections built into them. its charming. i prefer that actually. but what im saying is they call it 2.5D, games like guilty gear and fighterz. they use a 3d model and depending on where the camera is, they distort the model so it will look like the drawing, because if you just use one model, its not gonna look like the drawings. because the artist who designed the 2d version wasnt really so concerned with perfection. this isnt an opinion. i dont understand what youre arguing about.

I think there are two kinds of beginner. The ones who actually picked up the pencil for the first time, and the ones that doodled a lot when they were kids and were able to develop critical skills that will help them with learning in the future.

Everyone doodled a lot as a kid, I don't count people who continually drew all their life without guidance as beginners. So no, I don't see how there are two kinds of beginners.

everyone already knows its impossible to draw anime without going to japan

anything else is a goal of "wanting to sing in anothers voice"

there is no drug or study that will make you a mangaka

you must go there; the isle which was bombed and learn from sensei
