IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

So I drew a demon girl this time. Gonna start that ctrl+paint guide tommorow and color it later

Pose and anatomy are memory only so how is it? Also I don't know how to get into figure drawing, I tried but I almost always can do decent poses from memory but I'm pretty slow. How should I start figure and gesture drawing? Is there some technique to learn or simply grind?

I think you need to work on your proportions the most, in different places it's lanky, stumpy, stretched, too thin, too big.
Second biggest problem is foreshortening.
As far as a general approach to figure and gesture drawing is concerned I recommend Glenn Vilppu.

The one thing I will say about Proko is he's not funny whenever he tries to be in his lessons. It just feel like he's trying to be the quirky art professor but it comes off as (for lack of a better term) cringey and lame. It doesn't ruin the lesson in question though as he obviously makes the subject matter the main focus, with the jokes being an afterthought, which shows.

Although I have to admit, making an actual character out of a skeleton (Skelly I think it's named) is clever. Using its energetic personality while also showing how the human skeleton works is a good way for someone to learn from as long as it's not treating them like a child.

try to reduce the number of lines. doing another drawing on top of your sketches is good practice.

making your mark is liKe walking around place that you've never been before. You'll end up walking down the same road over and over. Doing another drawing on top of your drawing is just retracing your steps. You'll start to see which road is shorter and more comfortable to get to your destination.

Don't force yourself too much. Like 2-4 hours a day is just fine, fuck it, even just one hour a day if you want to, just as long as you're doing it and you enjoy it. Fuck.

To be fair, you probably shouldn't be focusing on any particular style as you are learning. The figure is sort of done using all the same basic shapes/proportions and shit, it's usually just the details that you add on later that impact the "style".

Thank you, I personally don't consider myself very good, the compliment is much appreciated.
I draw very rarely, but I've taken a figure drawing class in the past and I saw a lot of improvement with that.

Really I am not worthy of giving advice to anyone, but there are a few things that have helped me improve in noticeable ways. I would suggest meditating often, starting from large, loose and expressive lines/forms before moving to smaller and tighter details (remember that detail emphasizes the focal point), and checking back and forth between your reference as often as possible.

When I'm drawing I try to observe volumes and rhythms, think about what the motion of your lines represents on the forms you are drawing, generally follow the rhythm of the form.

There's not much more that I know. I try to keep the things I've learned in mind when I'm drawing, but often I don't.

Take a figure drawing class with a good teacher and stay relaxed. Try to mostly step away from identification with conscious thought, or at least being absorbed in it, as focusing on your thoughts will take you out of your work. Watch yourself work. This is a solid pathway into a flow state, as well as a pathway from practice related anxieties. Meditation was a big help for me when I was most active with drawing.

>>4206442

As you've probably noticed yourself it looks good in the thumbnail, that's cause you got the proportions and shading mostly right.

It falls apart when you look closer because the hatching just isn't that good. When hatching you should try and follow the forms of the subject using curved lines and not just do this straight 2D grid sort of thing. Also I'm not sure what kind of pen you're using but at this point I think you'd benefit more from just using a simple pencil which would give you more fine control over line weight.

Don't be afraid of using references for things that you don't know how to draw, you can search on google "saxophone drawing simple" and "person holding guitar" to get a good idea on how to draw them.

Yep, pick the gradient tool (it might be hidden under the paintbucket, if so right click the bucket and you see it) and at the top you can see options on how to apply the tool. You have chosen quite the challenging perspective Anon and you must be commended for having the balls to do that.

Here is how I would change, I think the torso and the back of the head could use more volume. The face feels slightly flat, I think the mouth area pops out a bit more. The curve of the stockings need to point towards the body since that is how the leg becomes a cylinder Finally the armpit should be connected to the breast line since it is actually the pectoral that continue to the arm.

Great job nevertheless I especially like what you did with the swords! Hope to see more!

On the right: the top line on the furthest plane is too dramatic. It looks like it would converge with the other line too close to your box so it should be adjusted. Pick up a pencil and just fucking do it. Who cares if it's shitty, or it's only 5 minutes, or you keep getting distracted during it, as long as you just draw. The longer you sit doing nothing going "I want to draw", the less you actually draw
Beyond forcing yourself to start drawing, don't force yourself to keep drawing if all you're doing is sitting there stressed out producing trash, at that point, give yourself a rest

If you can't draw because the thought seems tiring and vaguely anger enducing, it might be time for a break. You can't expect yourself to lift weights every day of the week for 5 hours straight with no breaks, it's the same for a energy consuming task like drawing, I personally don't draw on the weekends, and if I do, it's because I had a great idea and it's only for maybe 10 minutes

So, force yourself to start, but don't force yourself too hard for some sake of "keeping a streak"

I don't understand, I'm confused, frustrated, and a bit angry.
I've been studying Drawabox for a while, but drawing straight lines? Boxes of varying sizes? Literally anyone can do that. I can make circles in tubes and shit, but I'm not any better of an artist.
I don't understand "grinding." It's not like Skyrim or some shit where I draw a page of blobby circles every day and I can suddenly draw heads. And how am I supposed to incorporate this into my art? I can make really neat stick figures, but I'm no better at actual art.
I don't understand this whole "finding your own style" thing either. If all art is imitation, and art becomes better the more accurately you can imitate something, then how does one's style emerge?
This isn't like math, where I learn multiplication, and then realize exponents is just weird multiplication. This isn't programming, where I have a hundred variables that make anything when used in combination. This isn't piano, where I practice the notes of a song until it becomes muscle memory, and I can move my hands faster for the next song in the book.
I just don't understand! Do I have some kind of mental block? Am I missing a crucial part of the puzzle? Am I looking at this the wrong way? Am I learning the wrong way? Can I just not do art?
I don't understand.

I understand your frustration. You are actually right, "grinding" doesn't do shit unless you can incorporate it into your drawing from imagination.
>If all art is imitation, and art becomes better the more accurately you can imitate something, then how does one's style emerge?
All art isn't imitation. There's fundamentally your problem.
>This isn't piano, where I practice the notes of a song until it becomes muscle memory
To a certain extent, a lot of drawing is muscle memory. Drawing lines accurate/quickly and without any wobble is part of the muscle memory required to draw well.
Would you mind posting something that you've drawn yourself?

Study from ref
Make a drawing of a girl that looks similar to the type of girls you want to draw, then directly after (spend at LEAST 30 minutes on the from ref drawing, most of that 30+ minutes should be spent STARING at the ref), then draw a face, maybe even the face from the ref, from imagination or memory
Repeat this several times for several days, ref then imagination/memory, until you can draw a feminine face from imagination

Do not forget proportions, construction, and (not as important to others, but) aesthetics or the science of beauty
and flip your canvas occasionally but not constantly

Pump up the colors, most of it looks very muddy, make the green for the grass especially juicy green, do the same for the rest
Exaggeration is very important, no only in color but in figures, emotions, etc.
As for perspective, going along with exaggeration, and line of action, the uh other person, the one I assume has blue hair, should be more over to where the red thing I put is
The extra of the canvas beyond the red thing should be cut off, unless you want to make another panel and make this a two panel comic, Mayne a close up of the blue haired chicks face
This is a really shitty edit because I'm on mobile right now, but you get the just I hope

And also, the most obvious, clean up your lines

>> No.4209038

>>4209031
Clean. Up. Your. Lines.
If you're too lazy to do that, draw a beginning rough draft with a light colored pencil (animators use a light shade of blue, it doesn't usually show up on the scanned drawing, I personally only have a lime green laying around) and then go over it in your normal medium of choice (pencil, pen, marker, whatever, if you use non erasables over it, and the colored lead of choice is erasable, that's great)

Second, you are pillow shading on the hair, I know it's supposed to be anime/cartoon whatever, but either use flat shading or do anything besides pillow shading, you have normal shading on the neck, some weird unsettling shading on the eyes, and no shading almost anywhere else, stabilize yourself, decide which shading is suitable for you

Develop these basic things and come back later
And also, don't forget to grind fundies and do some studies from ref and from real life, ref does include studying from pics of anime/cartoon characters you like

yea, cleaning the lines up is something i’m kind of bad at... I’m definitely working on it though! thank you for the advice on the positioning, i might actually draw a second panel for this, now that you mention it.

So this was based off a ref?
Either your ref was shit or you really need to practice construction and proportions
The background blends in with the skin tone and hair, you should use a more contrasting color, perhaps a polar opposite to the blonde/skin tone, or a tetriary, a more tea color, since you are also using purple and dark red

The main problem, not to say color theory isn't important, but it will forever look bad if you don't make the head look normal, face included.
If need be,take a picture of yourself or your mother in that pose with a ponytail and a strand of hair over their face. Then draw a copy of the pi ture, and then draw from memory, and finally, try to redo the painting. Don't waste a bunch of canvases doing this either, do it pencil and paper, grayscale, maybe do colored pencils
>>4205483
It looks like you were going for some anime style
I know the majority of normies will immediately either go for the ass or the face, eventually they will look at the face at the very least, and your face is very oddly proportioned for anime or even a normal person, unless her bangs really are supposed to go below her eyebrows, then the face is too long instead of eyes up too high.
Shorten her chin and make her eyes bigger, I suggest the famous horny half closed eyes. Your eyes make her look less anime and more western half realism. Her perspective on the body is wonky and the way you shaded the chest spot in between the tit makes it look like there's supposed to be a tit in the light spot, either way the perspective is just fucked in between hip and chest.
that little line on the elbow needs to go, looks like fat is piling over or smth, very gross, same with the lines on the neck, max you should have one line to demonstrate the bend, the line of the muscle that goes from behind the ear to the clavicle, don't need the entire line, unless you're drawing a muscular male. Same with the lines coming from the armpit, you can demonstrate that with shading

>> No.4209099

>>4205483
>>4209089 (cont)
Also the hand is fucked, again, you have some weird wrinkles
honestly, the tit is pretty far out btw. So is the one leg, it transitions from butt cheek to let pretty weirdly though that may be just weird perspective or fat deposit from whatever ref you used
Either way, exaggeration is pretty important in non realism styles, so you should emphasize the asscheek going out by making the area between the furthermore asscheek and leg skinnier
Don't really bother with shading too much right now, just fix the proportions

You should be doing these alongside other studies FROM ref
The pose is very unnatural, try holding the pose in the drawing in real life
The face is all kinds of disgusting, do construction, do proportions
The forehead is tiny, the mouth is to the side (yes I know you're trying to do a cheeky grin) one eye is sunk too deep and the eyebrow is all the way where the temple should be
The pecs don't do that when you are in that pose

>> No.4209301

>>4208573

use a ref with more dynamic pose and preferably nude or with tight clothing. it's easier to see the flow and weight distribution that way.

start with gesture>construction>anatomy

get comfortable with each method before adding the next.

For now, you should just be drawing, doesn't matter what, at this point just drawing more often will show gains

But, drawing funders should be a good focus with even more gains
Go through drawabox lesson 1, all the way through, take your time, do tasks over again, even go overboard and do more than the lesson asks of you (if it says draw x amount of pages of whatever, maybe draw x+2), follow along to some Loomis books or any fundies books
Just go ham at those for a good week or two straight, every day for at LEAST an hour each day of dedicated study
And start on paper, not digital. Digital comes later. If you don't have any non lined paper, start by getting some non lined paper, loose leaf printer paper, sketchbook, back of old homework sheets, doesn't matter, just not lined

>>4209342

finish it

don't get stuck on one lesson until you perfected it. just do enough until you understand the lesson then move on to the next. stuck or don't get it? ask here or go to reddit and ask there.

you can always redo the entire thing if you want.

good luck.

Here's the thing about drawabox, anything besides lesson 1 and 2 is, well, not very great
And while you shouldn't be stuck on either of those lessons forever, you need to go back to them and redo them every once in a while, I recommend personally doing part of a lesson, then drawing whatever you want, maybe a ref practice, maybe imagination, who knows, and then the next day reviewing the same part, moving on to the next part, imagination/ref, next day review, move to next part, etc etc, with at the end of the lesson taking up an entire day to go through the entire lesson working on the parts you need the most help with

The practices should be practicing what you learned

If this is confusing please say so and I can demonstrate or elaborate
