IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

ctrl+paint course on digital art fundamentals is okay, it will teach you how not to fuck up basic rendering methods and keep it clean. for more advanced rendering and textured brushes i think you have to figure it on your own by observing other's work and just trying/experimenting. you can try watching videos on advanced brushworks but they rely highly on intuition in my opinion.

https://www.amazon.com/Sakura-Pigma-30062-Micron-Blister/dp/B0008G8G8Y/

because I saw an artist I liked on Twitter using them and not only did half of them fucking leak from the top, but even the 0.5mm pen that didn't leak is just fucking shit. You have to press down hard for it to come out as a full line without it drying out in the middle and it's basically random whether you get a good angle that it won't dry out in middle of a line. Is this just what all pens are fucking like or am I using them wrong? I thought if I bought a pen and fucking stroked it across a god damn page it would just place ink on the fucking page like you see in videos, but apparently not because I haven't gotten a SINGLE pen that's worked decently and not dried out/shown white from the page partially through the line.

I would take a picture, but my phone camera is ass. Basically, someone just give me a set of pens I can buy IRL or on Amazon that'll actually fucking work.

You are going well Anon. I would add more saturation to make it more alive. I have chosen a light direction from the top left since that is where the boobs seemed to get one and tried to adjusted the other highlights towards it notably the hair, the clothes, the eyes the guns. Choosing a dedicated direction for the main light source (or two)will be helpful to avoid confusion on where to put shading.

Finally I couldn't resist subtly adjusting the expression to be smug as well cause she looks really cute but she had an expression that felt unsure. Yours were pretty good already so that was just a personal thing.

I think you should render the background first, or at least tint it and determine the light source(s), so that you have reference for lighting.
Like, is the main light source from the window, or from a light somewhere else in the room? What is the ambient lighting in the room? A pure white background makes it kind of hard to judge what the values should be on your main subject.
From what you painted, it looks like she is lit from a bright overhead light with a lot of ambient lighting in a white room, and I'm not sure that's what you are going for. It makes the painting look sterile, which I don't think matches the character's expression or the setting she's in.

No, mindlessly copying stuff is easy. Anyone can do it. It just takes time. Drawing from imagination is the only thing that matters to me.
Many years ago, in highschool art class I once had a kind of bitchy teacher that actually tried to push people. She always to told us to draw faces. Needless to say I struggled with it so I came up with various measuring devices including using a fucking ruler. It got easier until I didn't have to use grids. That's my the extent of my "experience". A fucking art class I had once a week for a year. I was never interested in pursuing drawing until now.

Cast shadows are supposed to have hard-ish edges, but not with as abrupt of a cutoff as you put. Also, you made the shadow a gradient, which doesn't occur in cast shadows unless it is a very stretched out one that gets way further from the object casting it. Gradients should generally be saved for ambient occlusion.

Ctrl+Paint is definitely very good for teaching technical skills but he doesn't focus too much on theory and fundamentals. For that, I would recommend Marco Bucci on youtube, especially his videos on shadows and ambient occlusion.

What do people here think is the optimal ratio of reference to imagination. I've worked on the assumption that trying to draw something from imagination that you haven't studied before is simple poor practice and the ratio of reference to imagination should shift from mostly reference to mostly imagination as you gain proficiency. Right now I mostly draw from reference but when I occasionally draw a figure from imagination I do feel like I'm seeing similar progress as when I do from reference.

rather than the ratio, I think the frequency of the switch is the most important. if you are drawing from imagination, you should be looking for thing that you need to look up on reference, both picture and drawing, if you are drawing from observation, you should try to draw variant from imagination to make sure you mastered it. if you stay too long on one style of practice, you will quickly get stuck in your comfort zone and learn very slowly.

It must be pretty obvious, but most of the effort went into making sure the Girl standing on the car looked decent(well by decent I mean not a blob), I phoned in the rest due to time constraints. I looked at alot of those YouTube, how to draw manga style videos as reference, again, but those didn't seem to do much. I just need more practice is all. I'm going to see if I can put more time into making it look better!

criticism pls
i feel like i added too much detail to hand given how cartonish the rest of the drawing is and the hand itself looks kinda flat from the wrist i think

i dont think that it looks flat because of construction or anatomy, you just need to play with line thickness and shadows

Any recommendations on fundamentals to keep studying? I'm learning how to shade currently and anatomy/perspective are still something I'm trying to get down. Exercises/books/references greatly appreciated.
