I'm watching Steve Huston draw gestures right now.

How the hell are these people so good at drawing from observation? How do they decide where all these forms go and how tall/wide they should be? Drawing from observation to me means measuring and plotting marks and drawing contours.

What am I doing wrong?

Years and years of experience. To paraphrase something he says in one of his courses "You won't understand how to draw it because you haven't drawn a 1000 standing poses yet. And then when you finally have that's great but what about a sitting pose, you'll have to draw a 1000 of those"
You'll simply learn proportions among various other things as you put in the time. The more you study something the better your eye will be and the more relations between things you'll come to learn and to a certain extent adapt to your own tastes.

For the most part that is correct as long as it won't devolve into copying I.e "This line goes up a quarter inch to to the top left'" you will get naturally get better over time.
You could try to memorize some basic relationships like saying "A torso is a 3 by 2" or 'The legs are half the total length of the body etc.

>> No.4184616

>>4184612
Okay I'll try that. So I'll do shit like mark the top of the head, bottom of the chin, pit of the neck, but do the basic forms as if I'm designing them? That sounds simple enough but seeing how artists capture the likeness of people really intimidates me, especially work by Disney alumni.

>> No.4184635

>>4184616
That sounds good. as far as the basic forms are concerned it's good to analyze them for specific quirks but you should feel free to recreate/design them yourself. It's important that they are correct in their own right not so much that they are an exact copy of the model.

you didn't lose your ability, improvement is a constant ride of peaks and troughs, what tends to happen to me is that I start getting really good at something through hard work and effort, then I start to get complacent and go into cruise control and then my "skills" appear to go down.

Just remember, art should never be effortless, it might LOOK effortless when pro artists draw, but it's not, they just have a more streamlined way of thinking. Never go into cruise control!

>> No.4184755

really important if you want to draw mechanical and man-made things. QUITE important if you want to draw anything else (the theory you learn will help you drawing virtually anything) but if you want to draw organic things (characters, animals, landscapes etc) then you'd better spend your time learning basic perspective and then training your eye from drawing perspective without tools and guides (but you should learn the technical rules before you do that)

Ernest R. Norling's Perspective Made Easy was absolutely the most useful thing I ever read about perspective, but I don't do mechanical architecture drawing

>> No.4184757

if you can't tell, you probably are. You should be aware of the nuance of the things you're drawing as you're drawing them, otherwise you're probably symbol drawing. As long as you are considering perspective, form and weight etc while you're drawing you won't draw symbols.

What does symbol drawing looks like? Cubism? Like, the artist knows a nose should be there, and an ear there, but can't quite grasp how perspective of lighting affects them so they're like a collage pulled from other works that don't quite work together?

>> No.4184896

>>4184891
To a degree it's something like you described, there is no one way that it looks but it's very obvious when you see it. It's like the artist simply has a predetermined idea of what things look like and instead of obverving the actual shape and characteristics of, say, a models eyes, they just look at where the eye is, and maybe how big it is and draw "an eye" (ie. an almond shape with iris and pupil, and lines on top and bottom), they don't see the individual qualities of the models eyes.

But often a big giveaway is that they draw features totally flat without any kind of perspective, like if they draw a face at an angle they might draw a flat (straight on view) generic nose because they haven't really learned how to observe the nose as a 3D form made up of many different parts.

Thin red lines on white background might in general be unwise, as they can be hard to make out. I would not suggest using bright colors for contour however, as you are trying to implicate darkness with your lines - just draw black on white.

How do I learn how to feel the forms like Papa Vilppu (may the Lord bless him)?

Whenever I try his process (which is both aesthetically immaculate and seems like the best way to avoid drawing flat drawings), I cannot *see* these shapes and forms that he talks about and draws. I don't see 3 different spheres in the ass... just 1 round ass.

How can I learn to see these forms? Is it a matter of knowing they exist and drawing them even if you can't see them?

I cannot fathom how to walk towards this level.

You seem to be focused on copying the outer contour lines of the body which is not the path you want to take. Instead you wan't to deconstruct the body into basic shapes like boxes, cylinders, eggs etc and lay those down first. A little like those little wooden drawing mannequins you might have seen.
But before any of that you first want to spend some time learning how to actually draw various three dimensional forms and how they rotate in basic perspective so that you have the most rudimentary building blocks required to construct more complex subjects.

if you run your hands across your rib cage, in the middle of your chest kinds lower down then the nipples, you will feel a pit, just feel it out from there and you should get a general placement of where it should be, from where you feel things, you should be able to make your own landmarks, such as for me the bottom of my rib cage is about an inch above my belly button
the top is right at the clavicles to about 1.5-2 inches inward from the shoulders
this will all be different for someone who is taller or more muscular and vice versa

well if this is your very first drawing, this is a really nice starting place for a beg
tyhe colors are pretty on point and the proportions are nice, especially for mouse drawing
I wish for your level of precision with a mouse

the obvious first advice is to get a drawing tablet ASAP, a decent (for a beginner) one can go for 20$, about the price of a nice meal, that, or attempt the more expensive in the long run traditional art route involving markers, pencils, and a scanner or expensive high res camera to prevent spergs from sperging out about shitty camera quality (honestly, just stick with digital)

other than that, study shading and attempt some drawings from imagination and use refs until your imagination matches similar quality and proportions of your ref drawings (more complicated than I probably make it seem, this will probably take you years to perfect)

Everything about it is shit.
Or, to be more positive, you have excellent potential to improve!
You should study some fundamentals. Like unironically read Loomis. If that sounds too boring, I'd suggest you at least spend some time copying photos of naked women instead of drawing them from imagination. You can compare the reference and your drawing to see how badly you fucked up, and hopefully develop some sense for what a human body looks like.
Also, you aren't impressing anyone by ignoring hands and feet. I know they're hard to draw, but try anyway.

Well, ultimately motivation is a fairly limited resource. What you really need is discipline which is harder but ultimately more valuable.

The only problem is I can't really offer any advice other than "Just do it."

One thing that helped a lot for me though is time tracking, helped me move from drawing an hour a day to 6-8 hours. In a way it game-ified it but also allowed me to try lots of different things and tangibly see if they worked.

It's tough for the first few months but its been almost 2 years at this point and its basically automatic and every productive hour of my life is tracked.

I keep hearing "Loomis makes head construction easy" and the fact that I'm still struggling with it makes me want to put a gun in my mouth.

I draw the ball.

I extend the line down the middle.

I "chop off the sides" (this is still a little bit of guess work)

I extend the jaw.

Then as I'm adding features, things get fucky and nothing looks right. The features don't look right where they're placed.

I have no idea why it's happening. It's really disheartening that I can't figure out why it isn't coming together, because I've put in 20 hours the last three days alone and it just feels like I'm spinning my wheels.

>> No.4188516

Honestly can't say I mastered his method, but I did start drawing heads by using it. And I still needs a lot of guesswork for the face to look right, in my opinion. It's half following his guidelines, half saying
>Yeah no this looks bad I'll adjust it a bit

I'd focus on waiting before drawing the jaw. First do the whole circle thing with ovals at the sides, do the eyes and nose and guess where the mouth is... and then draw the jaw. Because otherwise you're trying to place features in a very long face and it might look bad

>> No.4188520

>>4188504
you need to understand that loomis, like thousand other methods, isnt a list of steps you can follow blindly and suddenly youll get a perfect face. its not a recipe. its someone’s proposed look at how to construct 3d forms and planes that create the human head. andrew loomis came up with his own method of simplifying the construction but he didnt invent anything new. its all just good old perspective but shown with a sphere and some lines. it could be a box or a cyllinder for all it matters, the effect would be the same: an *illusion* of 3d form with proportions of human face on a piece of paper. you need to understand the form itself first and foremost; whether youre using loomis or someone else doesnt matter. look at some ref photos and try to find your own simple 3d shapes. they dont need to be the exact same ones loomis proposed.

Don't follow the "method". Learn what the basic proportions are like so you know how to check your work. Draw lots of heads from reference to build up an intuition for how to draw them. Then make up your own method that works for you.

From my understanding, its like lifting weights for the first time. Stabilizers and shit will kick in, but only when you make that focused effort to do it correctly. Do it in consistently timed intervals with breaks, even if you don't feel tired. After while though, this sort of thing should be practiced second hand by drawing 3d forms. And just lift weights anyways, it will help.

after you break into holding the pencil correctly, start drawing from your shoulder or (easier) elbow, I find I dont really have to switch my grip from shoulder drawing, to elbow drawing, to wrist drawing, majority of my drawing is also done from elbow because of the smaller size of my tablet, but thats still 10x better than drawing from purely wrist
