That’s not what they’re saying I think. I think they’re saying you should be doing both. Groom both skills at the same time. Draw a reference then attempt to paint it. The reference helps you see values and colors. You’ll progress in both.
Or that pen bucket is a dumb method to draw. I agree you either should get a better medium. Pen and paper is perfectly fine.

Yeah, holy shit, don't draw with a fucking mouse. That's all he's trying to say. Consider this: No professional draws with a fucking mouse. NONE. Plenty of professionals draw with a screenless tablet, a screen tablet, paper, pencils, pens, markers, iPads, literally EVERYTHING but a fucking mouse.
Think about pro fighting game players, if you want to be a pro at fighting games, you don't NEED an arcade stick because plenty of pros have won EVO with a fucking default ass PS3 controller-- but NO pro at art has drawn with a mouse.
He is saying if you are drawing with a mouse, you are better off drawing on paper with a pencil than you are trying to use a mouse.
Why are you on a fucking board dedicated to art and becoming better at art, yet aren't listening to fucking advice you're given? Especially when that advice isn't difficult. He's not telling you to buy hundreds of dollars of books or perfectly draw a skeleton from every single fucking angle, he is literally telling you to get a default ass fucking pencil and a default ass piece of paper and fucking draw on it.

I turd polish A LOT and sometimes I take days to finish something. Currently I'm trying to become faster at drawing and learn feets and hands, but I have no idea if im on the right way or progressing.
I'm a 32 yo neet, I've wasted most of my life studying and searching for work and all of this just made me miserable. Drawing in one of the things that I always wished to do. >How did you start out?
I started because I got a tablet for free. I was already ok at copying pictures because of high school assignments but not much beyond that. First thing I did was follow ctrl+paint lessons to understand digital, but never completed it. Did a bit of fun with a pencil for about a week then skipped straight to hampton.
>Which books did you read?
From the very instant I started I was worried about how much I was learning so I was always experimenting with different ways of studying. I found out books weren't helping me much early on. What really helped me to make things click was copying (analyzing, getting a feel for, etc) other artist's studies, but it helped only if the artists had a similar way of thinking to me. I found that only studying with intent was fruitful. You need to pick a single aspect to study and focus on it.
I only recently found a good way get a lot out of a studying a single drawing. It seems really obvious to me now but all I have to do is just instantly apply whatever I studied. For every referenced drawing I do, I do at least another one from imagination. It seems to be really helping when it comes to remembering details.

I'm really having a hard time trying to describe it but I start out with blobs of color to see how well they go together. When I'm satisfied with the colors and composition, I move on to "sculpting" the forms, making adjustments until I'm satisfied(I don't do construction so I just go by feel). Then polishing which takes the most amount of time--this is where I add the textures. I also take multiple days off between work sessions and I'm easily distracted so it usually takes me weeks to finish a project, not a very good workflow. I'm still trying to figure out how I can improve in this aspect but maybe it's just because of my inexperience.

What's he looking at
What time of day is it
How big is the room he's in
How far away is the statue behind him
What's he about to do
How does he feel
Is he a statue, or does he have movement and life?
What's off frame?

The armour and sword have so much drama in their design alone, which makes me think you have incredible potential, but without those elements, the figure has little more impact or charisma than the 2010 one (if you don't believe me, draw them both wearing the same outfit or nude)

Scott Eaton, James Gurney, Scott Robertson, Loomis and such are pretty good. A lot of people say "Just draw" but don't elaborate on it. You need to draw with a purpose of improving something specific. Like perspective or figures.
>>4192155
Go ahead and overlay them anon, should be easy in your art program.

>>4192192
You have to really love drawing. I love it and it still frustrates me sometimes. You need to be dedicated and put forward a good work ethic. At first I did have a part time job and drew. I built a following on commissions and soon enough my commissions supported me better than my part time. Once I gained enough traction I created a Patreon, which was slow at first, but marketing is really key.

this is the closest thing to a study i used to do, i never used references or gesture what i did was study each part of the body individually but that was just this year

i think i have never done a proper study i just drew whatever until i could understand it and that was it .

my progress is really embarrassing.. i don't really have many pieces to show because i tend to never complete anything and just sketch, so that's why its so scarce.

it was only this year i pushed myself to do more creative work than just shitty studies. i still think my art is boring as shit but i think im getting somewhere. or maybe i'm just being optimistic. i just dont like how samey it looks.

It's literally worse what the fuck HOW. Usually at such a low level, improvement is easy because there's so much to improve on, but you somehow regressed as a beginner.
My suggestions for you: a) do gestures and references of people, b) draw hands and arms for fuck sake, do not cover them up like a coward.
