IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

also beg but i get the sense you're scared of letting things become distorted. look at your references. on the left, the front of the plastic bit surrounding trigger has become larger, it's obscuring more of the parts behind it

best advice i could give on how to make it prettier is to look at the form carefully and feel how it flows. the different lines form together a coherent whole. even on a gun, there aren't as many totally straight lines as you might think.

It looks like they made a sketch from life and then applied an ink wash on top of it for the tones. Best way is to learn the basics of perspective (Perspective made easy, framed perspective, perspective for comic artists, Marshall Vandruffs video courses, etc) and then to do studies of landscapes you like. The one you posted is fairly simple in that it doesn't feature any rigid man made structures so you're free to be loose with the perspective. The most important things for doing landscapes like this is having a basic knowledge of perspective and understanding form so you know where to lay down tone to imply lighting.
The best way to learn is to just collect a bunch of art you like, like the on you posted, and do studies of them. Some quick and loose, some longer and more intricate, etc. See how the artist simplifies nature, what kind of marks they're making, where they're laying down their values, etc. And then go outside and try drawing some landscapes from life. Think about how your favorite artists would simplify what you see before you. Then compare it with art you like and think about what you could do differently. You may also find the "Drawing Nature" book by Stanley Multzman helpful. It should be in the book thread. But again I think just doing studies and drawing from life on your own would be the most helpful.

1. line confidence - less scratching, more continuous, dynamic lines. lesson 1 at drawabox

2. less outlining, more thinking with forms - her lips and eyes are just flat outlines, think about the 3d structure first and try to build it up instead of focusing on what shapes you see. You've already done some of that in her nose so keep going in that direction.

3. this might be controversial but i personally dont recommend tracing (i see some tracing on your ref pic). the more you suffer trying to draw it on your own the more you'll learn.

4. compare the proportions i your ref. look at the vertical distance between her eyebrows and her upper eyelids. compare eye width to nose width. now go back to your drawing and check these measurements.

remember to draw from imagination along with making studies. even if it looks like shit now, do it. dont end up like half of this sub that cannot design anything and need a reference for every milimeter of their initial sketch.

change your artwork to black and white and think about what you see. ask yourself whether you're able to tell light from shadow. check whether there is a defined light source in your artwork.

next, the colors: again, think about the light source. is it a sunny day? is the sky blue? okay, so how do the colors of the sun and the sky affect the environment? how does a green plant look in a sunlight? or how does in took in a shadow? what is the color of a shadowed area on a sunny day? start on page 28 of Color & Light by james gurney, might help you.

good job on keeping the brush size relatively big. you should start implementing some brushstroke variety in near future. the composition is also not bad. read about focal points. i like the colors on the rocky areas.

you're talking about things like perspective, lighting, construction, but i can't see any of that in the drawing, it looks like a child drew it, like the other anon said. "the use of symbols" only makes sense when you're an experienced artist who is very deliberate about these things. as a beginner, symbol drawing is the first thing to be overcome, so it's best to avoid that

just start with the fundamentals, try to draw "around the form" (to the extent that it's clearly visible there was an attempt), don't give up when it makes you wanna kill yourself, and eventually you'll get it

Make sure you got your basic volumes and perspective down first and then you can work with very basic gestures made out of long lines not much more complex then a stick figure.
Some people define gestures as the general energy, as the axis or the longest sustained curve and those are all valid as long as they show the movement and tension of a pose for you personally.

Heard so many times that you should start traditional but when pressed on it nobody could ever give me an actual answer. Sounds like one of those things that "seem logical" but nobody can really give a good argument for or against.
I'd say traditional is easier to grasp starting out since digital is a bit more "abstract" and has a lot of tempting crutches, but its not like you can just "skip ahead" with digital either, I'd almost argue its even more finnicky to draw straight with digital so if you can get used to that early on thats also a plus.
I just find digital much more comfortable, the knowledge, understanding and the arm movmenents are still largely the same so just opt for what you prefer would be my advice

The only two beginner tips I can hand out is that small non-screen tablets have lower precision which is still fine but it takes a bit of getting used to and it can be harder to draw from the full arm. And don't be afraid to use a bit of the stabilizer tool (not to high but like 5-20%) and especially on a non-screen tablet you're going to want to just make ample use of it.

I'd say if you only kept either the purple or green, it'd work and be super appealing, but with both it just confuses the eye too much and draws too much attention from areas like the face, which should be the focal point (though the use of the red in the eyes is really effective). Maybe you could rim the teeth with red or something to draw the focus back? Just a suggestion.

hey guys
this is the most polished thing I've done all month. I see big issues with the foreshortening of the left leg, the lower right extra hand's anatomy (though that's because I simply didn't care to do it better, so blame my bad discipline) and I don't like the long straight wrinkle line on the side of the upper left extra hand. The left shoulder also could use less visual seperation.
Is there anything else yall see? Any proposed fixes? I used a reference and very bare bones construction (think sticks with ball joints).

Looking at all the drawings you've posted in the last few threads I would advice you to dial it back a little bit in terms of time spend per drawing and instead spend more time doing quick 1-5 minute gestures. The proportions especially are frequently off. Just looking at this drawing her right arm is to long especially on the forearm. her left upper arm is to short. the torso is to big, the shoulders are to wide. her thighs are to short just to point out a few proportional issues.

An easy way to introduce this idea to you is (if you aren't celibate) draw a woman's legs with thigh highs, your monkey brain will automatically feel her warm skin as you draw the forms, then when you draw the contour of where the thigh high ends, you'll automatically be able to feel the soft thigh, and coarse fabric as you wrap it around the thigh.

All of the figures are really small, and I noticed how I tend to do lots of stylization in these cases, and also how I'm starting to use the same kind of trait.

As much as people here like to hype imagination the reality behind it is that you can't realistically draw something from imagination that you haven't extensively studied from reference first.
At this stage I would focus far more on drawing from a reference because there are simply way to many holes in your overall drawing.

Thanks dude.
I really suck at shaping out faces, and I was wondering if there is anything specific that I am doing wrong.

It's like those anons posting their progress comparisons and the first drawing they supposedly did when first learning is equivalent to 2 years of practice.

I keep failing at my tones. My images come across as flat. How are the tones in this? The paintwork is nothing special, I am just trying to wrap my head around the fundamental idea of it.

It looks right to me.
