Not quite beg but far from Pro? please use this thread to post daily studies, pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Previous thread: >>4130661

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

READ THE STICKY if you refresh your fundies.

Help others with constructive criticism.

Don't post obviously beg tier stuff and get mad when no one gives a crit. Developing your eyes to critique your own work is far more valuable than someone else's critique.

when I tried to make the right eyebrow aligned linear to the left one, it looks ugly. Then I titled it up a little then it looks little bit better but the eyebrow edge is now stretched out. It was frustrating because I just can't make the two eyebrows arch out as parallel as I wanted it to me.

this is cool man, you're great. Just make sure you pay more attention to the compression of flesh, like squash and stretch. The fingers of the middle right figure aren't really compressed into the ground convincingly. The calves don't compress into the hamstrings convincingly either on this bottom right drawings. When feet are pressed against the ground the toes should spread out to grip the ground, not stay bunched together. The ones on the top left are pretty good though

But all of the above is really easy to fix for you, just pay more attention to it from now on.

Trying to get better at digital painting, but it doesn't feel right. I've read that you should turn off opacity on pen pressure to make it closer to real painting, is that true? Also should I be blending on the canvas and color picking from there, or should be using the sliders/wheel/palette to pick each color?
Using photoshop atm, but have tried other programs and the way colors/edges work just doesn't feel intuitive.

opacity jitter is key, get used to it
as for colorpicking, mix on canvas, don't colorpick heavily from ref or it'll stunt your growth in learning color. can be used as a tool down the line for supplementing or blocking in your first tones, but getting a good eye for doing it manually will net you massive gains.
(p.s.: newer PS might have a mixing window like CSP, that would work too, i'm on an older version and it doesnt so i just mix in canvas)

>>4170943

Super flat. The amount of detail is the same over the whole piece and things aren't in perspective. I still like the composition end the edgy in-your-face- feel of the whole thing...

>>4171599

>>4171628

Torso should be slightly taller and arms should be slightly longer.

>>4173394

That's just a horrible pose... I don't know what he's even doing! Is he shy or angry or? I dunno. Figure it out! I think it'd be better if he had the arm to our right behind his body since he's not doing anything with it or you have to pose that arm but what ever...

>>4173944

The angles of her face are all wrong and her nose is flat and anatomically unaesthetic. You did a semi decent job on the eyes (even though they're looking in separate directions and I think it works for you piece) but the nose is all fucked and the mask is pointing forwards(?). It's just all fucked. The nose anatomy is all fucked too. If you want me to show how it's fucked you can ask me but I need to go to sleep. I really like the energy on the hands and the way you lay in your strokes. Foreshortening doesn't seem to work on this thing either...

You have some good ideas but do something simpler before you get into this the next time.

np hope it helps, i rly like your drawing, have you considered just adding some delicate flushes of colors to the grayscale version instead of going full color? check out this ruan jia's "grayscale" study, it does have some color if you look at it closely https://i.warosu.org/data/ic/img/0015/62/1381297712510.jpg just his work in general is a good representation of what i have in mind here

>>4178761
i also think doing art in grayscale first is a very complicated way to achieve something that could be otherwise done with some studying plus some trial and error, but then i've seen some really amazing art created that way and everyone has their own way of understanding things so as long as the final effect looks good, i'd say it's all cool. i *am* convinced that g->c will always look inferior to color but i also think there are way worse techniques out there.

obvious answer is Color & light by james gurney but the book cen be pretty hard to understand/implement even when you're int level.

they key to light and colors is studying these principles:

1. value - tons of resources out there; reflected/bounce light and core shadow are the most important. your art needs to work both in greyscale and color.

2. how light affects color - check out this weird video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk3JhHSkvAI its really strange but has a lot of important knowledge

3. color harmony - watch marco bucci's videos on color theory. his digital work isnt very good but he does have a good understanding of color which shows in his traditional art. i think these videos are really solid

Can somebody please point me in the right direction to learn more about picking colors for clothes? I don't mean painting colors. More like actual clothing colors. I just spent an unnecessarily long amount of time trying to figure out colors for this witch to wear without them clashing or being boring.

Is this a stupid question? I don't know. I'm not great at fashion and I feel like maybe learning more about real life clothing could make it easier next time.

Its not a stupid question at all. It's color theory even if you dont realize it yet anon, color harmony is a thing. For now i'd suggest going to colourlovers.com/palettes for inspirations. If you really want to get into color & outfit design for your characters though, you'll need the real deal, so following some tumblrs that post recent fashion shows & browsing online editorials. It's worth your time if you're really into that, fashion is full of amazing art inspo, the new wave of nip streetwear is literal eyecandy. If you prefer more regal stuff then start digging through old D&G, new valentino, elie saab and zuhair murad.

Sorry for my autistic rant. You need to work on your construction and drawing in general anon, no amount of thick lineart and abstract shapes will fix that. I'd tell you to go back to /beg/ but im not sure whether that place is helpful at all.

short term goal: study colour theory, buy a book about colour theory (I like David Hornung's Color A Workshop for Artists and Designers) and watch videos and tutorials on youtube etc.

long term goal: build a visual library, one of the most underrated fundamental things for any artist is to develop a personal visual library, this just means observing, studying and painting things that interest you, and really imprinting them in your mind for future reference and inspiration. This should be as deep and broad as you can possibly manage and you shouldn't stop developing your visual library for as long as you live.

mid-term goal: gather some references of real world things that you like, and that you feel match the "tone" of your character, and apply the colours of that thing to your character clothes, skin, hair etc. it can literally be anything, you can apply the colours of landscapes, vehicles, weapons, seasons food ANYTHING to your character, and it will naturally lend a certain coherence and feeling to your character.

Good luck.

You weren’t specific and I just told you the most blaring issue.
Your painting is muddy unless that’s the style you’re going for. What do YOU want your painting to resemble? Post an example. What are you going for? Crisp lines? Digital smoothness like Sakimichan? That way I’ll know where to direct you.
I think you have nice color choice, and your face looks nice. You just need to focus on the big issue first. Otherwise it’s just polishing a turd.

>> No.4182953

>>4182934
I realize I wasn't specific. But I just mean, fixing proportions until they're accurate isn't going to make the painting good or interesting.

Sakimichan's style is probably my least favorite in the digital scene.

I'm really inspired by Ruan Jia, Anders Zorn, Abbott Thayer, Sargent, Nicolai Fechin, Ilya Repin, Mian Situ, Wu Zhaoming.

I'm just trying to be "me". But with technical skills and a traditional approach. I'm not necessarily trying to "mimic" traditional, but I'd like to steer clear of the typical digital look.

>> No.4182958

not the anon replying, but you would have to be stupid to think that proper proportions and good technical skill in that area won't make a good painting, its the base requirement for good work, is an understanding and application of fundamentals such as that.

No, I think it's lacking in values, edges, color and brushwork.

This.
I don’t know where to direct you because I don’t know what look you’re aiming for. Post an example. What theme/athetic are you aiming for? Saying me doesn’t help because I’m not you therefore I cannot guess what you want it to resemble. Traditional in what way there are hundreds of styles for traditional. You’re too vague and I don’t know what your goalpost looks like.
Example.
I want to draw in a way that has this aesthetic. I want to focus on the realistic female form while making a surreal image. I want to have a similar coloring style to this. I want to draw traditionally with pen and pencil.”
I would suggest studying the aspects you like. Study color theory, draw models. Find references. Alternate between drawing from life to drawing from imagination. Look at it see what you did wrong then correct it. Repeat until you die.
>>4182971
This.
You’ll end up polishing a turd. Fixing proportions is the first step. If the base is weak then everything else won’t really matter.

I'm not neglecting drawing. I do draw a lot, I just paint a lot too.

In the painting I posted above, I did do a preliminary sketch to work out the pose and gesture, and I thought it looked fine. But I guess I lost track of it after I started painting over it.

Anyways, you guys have made it clear that I should grind anatomy for a while before I paint anymore.

>> No.4183427

>>4183377
No. You should paint. But you should also focus on anatomy. You can do both. Start with a reference. Draw it, then paint it. You’ll have a image to reference and learn about values and colors. You’ll hit three of your goals at once.

Just do an exercise then draw something you like and see what you learned. It’s like studying a paper then taking a practice test.

Hope this helps.

start thinking about the forms the shadows create - go for outline instead of random hatching/scribbling. picrel - a snippet from Huston's book. as you can see, the outline of the shadow come first, the "filling" isn't as important. this approach is very helpful and effective for learning.

>>4186123
not sure about the airbrush use in her hair. also the bright outline on her neck is a rather weird choice, im guessing you were going for a rim light ? it cannot be just a harsh line on the outline of your character, you need to make an illusion of the light "bleeding" into your forms. also think about her collarbones, how would they attach to her shoulders here? on the plus side, your shadows are nice and clean and i like the edge control around her eyes and in the cupid bow area.

>>4186127
first of all: get yourself a scanner or at least take pictures in proper lighting and correct the contrast before you upload anything. you cuold be next da vinci for all we know but nobodys gonna look objectively at a picture of such poor quality. i can barely see the lines and the lamp highlighted some bumps in the colored area on the bottom. also, if this isn't ink - i suggest you start working in ink if this aesthetic is your game.

>>4186134
i feel like these random scribbles take away from your brushwork which is actually really nice on its own. you know what im talking about, these wobbly lines on his nose, above his eyebrow and in his cheekbone area. they dont look like dne on purpose, they look random. otherwise i like the colors and edge control.

I do gif animations with GIMP. it's pretty simple.
Basically the gist is to name layers in [layername](Nms) format (like "mylayer1(250ms)", "mylayerX(1300ms)", etc.)if you want to specify how long a frame lasts,
otherwise just get a project with layers as frames in wanted order and export as gif and fill "save as animation" checkbox. fiddle with settings and you're done.

np anon, what software are you using? i used photoshop but the stuff i mention here is available in most raster editing programs.

Before anything, always take as good picture as you can. Daylight is the best, keep your phone parallel to your paper. Watch out for areas where light shines on your pencil drawing as it can create ugly reflections.

1. change the color mode to grayscale. this is important. leaving pencil or ink b&w sketches in color will make it 100x harder to edit and you dont need these colors anyway.

2. use Levels to increase the brightness of white and darkness of black as much as possible without using detail. Any similar option (brigthness/contrast for example) is okay, i just like using Levels because its the most precise and flexible.

3. Use dodge tool with bigh soft airbrush to remove paper folds and shadows. If a part of the drawing becomes too bright in the process, correct it with burn tool (also set on a soft airbrush).

4. flatten the image (layers -> flatten or layers->merge visible).

5. if you're using photoshop, you can try this: Select->Color selection, click the color of your paper, work with the slider a bit, click OK, hit V and hit delete. it should delete the remaining bits of the paper, thus leaving only your pencil drawing.

this is of course not the only right way to do it, and not the best one by any means, its just how i do it. there are many tutorials on sketch clean up online https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwRc9-f_zN4 (sinix sucks in general but this one is alright its just some technical photoshop stuff). if you feel like your artwork looks too "sharp" after resizing, use Blur (but use it very lightly). similarly, if it looks to blurry, use sharpen (again, lightly). also never upload unedited photos of pencil or ink drawings to social media, people really dont like it and wont engage with your art.

instagram.com/zuzannapx im not a pro by -any- means but im glad i could help. im simply speaking from experience because i also used to upload bad quality photos of sketches and looking back it was really bad. your nice linework deserves a good presentation. if all of the technical stuff is too much for you i recommend getting a cheap canon scanner, will save you a lot of time (the software has built in presets for drawings) and you can scan your art in high resolutions so that you can print in on bigger formats later - an A4 drawing scanned in 1200 dpi can be printed on 100x70 cm format.

1. why are you using black? black means the surface absorbed the light 100%. outer space is black. dont use black. same for white in highlights - is his skin 100% reflective? set your background to something different than white, it helps you look at color relationships better and will be easier on your eyes.

2. You need more soft edges. Use them along with hard edges to create a contrast.

3. Weird colors. Did you sample them from a photo? "Enhancing" the real colors a bit helps understand color theory better - oppose your warm light source with cool shadows.

4. There's no form in his left side of his face. Just a big flat shape of bright skin.

You need to create some variety in your brushstrokes. Dont render skin the same way you render hair.

Anyway, as the other anon said, your line work is really patchy. I get what you're trying to do making the majority of the outlines thick but the lines inside the face thinner, but because of the overall messiness it doesn't really work.

I think the eyebrow to the hairline needs to have a bit more distance, it makes the forehead look tiny.

Overall good start but doesn't look refined enough to be anything more than a quickie.
